Population Genetic Structure In Migratory Sandhill Cranes And The Role Of Pleistocene Glaciations, Kenneth L. Jones, Gary L. Krapu, David A. Brandt, Mary V. Ashley Jan 2005

Population Genetic Structure In Migratory Sandhill Cranes And The Role Of Pleistocene Glaciations, Kenneth L. Jones, Gary L. Krapu, David A. Brandt, Mary V. Ashley

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

Previous studies of migratory sandhill cranes (Grus Canadensis) have made significant progress explaining evolution of this group at the species scale, but have been unsuccessful in explaining the geographically partitioned variation in morphology seen on the population scale. The objectives of this study were to assess the population structure and gene flow patterns among migratory sandhill cranes using microsatellite DNA genotypes and mitochondrial DNA haplotypes of a large sample of individuals across three populations. In particular, we were interested in evaluating the roles of Pleistocene glaciation events and postglaciation gene flow in shaping the present-day population structure. Our …

Auditory Brainstem Responses In The Eastern Screech Owl: An Estimate Of Auditory Thresholds, Elizabeth F. Brittan-Powell, Bernard Lohr, Dana L. Hahn, Robert J. Dooling

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

The auditory brainstem response (ABR), a measure of neural synchrony, was used to estimate auditory sensitivity in the eastern screech owl (Megascops asio). The typical screech owl ABR waveform showed two to three prominent peaks occurring within 5 ms of stimulus onset. As sound pressure levels increased, the ABR peak amplitude increased and latency decreased. With an increasing stimulus presentation rate, ABR peak amplitude decreased and latency increased. Generally, changes in the ABR waveform to stimulus intensity and repetition rate are consistent with the pattern found in several avian families. The ABR audiogram shows that screech owls hear best between …

Lack Of Brown-Headed Cowbird Nest Parasitism In A Short Grass Region, Stephen L. Winter, Jack F. Cully Jr. Jan 2005

Lack Of Brown-Headed Cowbird Nest Parasitism In A Short Grass Region, Stephen L. Winter, Jack F. Cully Jr.

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

While conducting field work in Morton County, southwestern Kansas and Baca County, southeastern Colorado, during the period 27 May to 2 July 1997, we found 36 nests of seven bird species. Nests were not searched for systematically, but were found coincidentally as data were collected along transects during research investigating the breeding bird and plant communities of black-tailed prairie dog (Cynomys ludovicianus) colonies and noncolonized shortgrass prairie (Winter 1999).

Providing Effective Counseling To Substance Abusers Through The Use Of Biopsychosocialspiritual Strategies, Rachel Phillips Jan 2005

Providing Effective Counseling To Substance Abusers Through The Use Of Biopsychosocialspiritual Strategies, Rachel Phillips

Graduate Research Papers

The field of substance abuse has had a history of relapse. Both In-Patient and Out-Patient Treatment facilities have experienced the "revolving door" effect (Walton, Blow, and Booth, 2001). D.R. Laws found in research he conducted that 80% of the patients treated, relapsed 12 months after treatment and two-thirds of the relapses were within 90 days of treatment (Laws, 1999). The federal government has begun questioning the validity of these programs in light of skyrocketing costs for substance abuse treatment (Craig, 2004). Clinicians have begun to examine the cost effectiveness of their current treatment modalities. This paper will provide an overview …

Genetic Use Restriction (Or Terminator) Technologies (Gurts) In Agricultural Biotechnology: The Limits Of Technological Alternatives To Intellectual Property, Chidi Oguamanam Jan 2005

Genetic Use Restriction (Or Terminator) Technologies (Gurts) In Agricultural Biotechnology: The Limits Of Technological Alternatives To Intellectual Property, Chidi Oguamanam

Canadian Journal of Law and Technology

This article examines the adequacy of terminator technology as a potential substitute for traditional intellectual property. It acknowledges that the technology provides a stronger protection and reward mechanism than that offered by the traditional intellectual property rights regime. However, terminator technology or any other technology for that matter, is outside the pantheon of intellectual property regimes. Fundamentally, terminator is a technological answer to the quest by private sector interests to improve appropriability of returns on investments in agrobiotech. It potentially represents a panacea to the long standing industry struggle over the profitability of private research in agrobiotech and the need …

Model The Effect Of Four Artificial Recharge Dams On The Quality Of Groundwater Using Geostatistical Methods In Gis Environment, Oman Jan 2005

Model The Effect Of Four Artificial Recharge Dams On The Quality Of Groundwater Using Geostatistical Methods In Gis Environment, Oman

Journal of Spatial Hydrology

The geostatistical techniques of GPI, IDW and Kriging were applied in order to evaluate the use of these statistical approaches in GIS environment to examine artificial recharge dams and its effect on the quality of groundwater. Quantitative models were employed to investigate one aspect of the artificial dam’s role on improving the shallow groundwater quality.

The TDS was taken as the chemical parameter to validate the applicability of the geostatistical models in the four dams. The decrease of salinity of groundwater along the subsurface flow path away from the dams toward the coast, in all the prepared interpolated maps is …

The Potential Of Vibrational Spectroscopy In The Early Detection Of Cervical Cancer: An Exciting Emerging Field, Eoghan O'Faolain, Mary Hunter, Joe Byrne, Peter Kelehan, Hugh Byrne, Fiona Lyng

Conference papers

The application of vibrational spectroscopy to disease diagnosis is a relatively new, rapidly evolving scientific field. Techniques such as Raman and infrared spectroscopy have shown great promise in this regard over the past number of years. This study directly compared Raman spectroscopy and synchrotron infrared (SR-IR) spectroscopy on parallel cervical cancer samples. Both frozen and dewaxed formalin fixed paraffin preserved tissue sections were examined. Both tissue types produced good quality Raman and SR-IR spectra, although the lesser processed, frozen tissue sections displayed the most detailed spectra. Spectroscopy was shown capable of discriminating between different cell types in normal cervical tissue. …

Reduced Macrophage Apoptosis Is Associated With Accelerated Atherosclerosis In Low-Denstiy Lipoprotein Receptor-Null Mice, Michael Sinensky, J. Liu, D. P. Thweke, Y. R. Su, M. F. Linton, S. Fazio

Faculty Publications, Biological Sciences

Objective— The majority of apoptotic cells in atherosclerotic lesions are macrophages. However, the pathogenic role of macrophage apoptosis in the development of atherosclerosis remains unclear. Elevated expression of Bax, one of the pivotal proapoptotic proteins of the Bcl-2 family, has been found in human atherosclerotic plaques. Activation of Bax also occurs in free cholesterol-loaded and oxysterol-treated mouse macrophages. In this study, we examined the effect of Bax deficiency in bone marrow-derived leukocytes on the development of atherosclerosis in low-density lipoprotein receptor-null (LDLR−/−) mice. Methods and Results— Fourteen 8-week-old male LDLR−/− mice were lethally irradiated and reconstituted with either wild-type (WT) …

Faculty Publications, Chemistry

Absorption, emission, and excitation spectra for solid-state and solution of Tb(III), Dy(III), and Gd(III) complexes with the polypyridine ligand 6,6‘-bis[bis(2-pyridylmethyl)-aminomethyl]-2,2‘-bipyridine (C36H34N8) are presented. Measurements of excited-state lifetimes and quantum yields in various solvents at room temperature and 77 K are also reported and used to characterize the excited-state energetics of this system. Special attention is given to the characterization of metal-to-ligand energy transfer efficiency and mechanisms. The measurement of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) from the solution of the Dy(III) complex following circularly polarized excitation confirms the chiral structure of the complexes under study. No CPL is present in the luminescence …

Convergence Analysis Of Mcmc Method In The Study Of Genetic Linkage With Missing Data, Diana Fisher Jan 2005

Convergence Analysis Of Mcmc Method In The Study Of Genetic Linkage With Missing Data, Diana Fisher

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Computational infeasibility of exact methods for solving genetic linkage analysis problems has led to the development of a new collection of stochastic methods, all of which require the use of Markov chains. The purpose of this work is to investigate the complexities of missing data in pedigree analysis using the Monte Carlo Markov Chain (MCMC) method as compared to the exact results. Also, we attempt to determine an association between missing data in a familial pedigree and the convergence to stationarity of a descent graph Markov chain implemented in the stochastic method for parametric linkage analysis.

In particular, we will …

Effect Of Dna Base Modification On Polymerase Chain Reaction Efficiency And Fidelity, Jan A. Sikorsky Jan 2005

Effect Of Dna Base Modification On Polymerase Chain Reaction Efficiency And Fidelity, Jan A. Sikorsky

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Polymerase stop assays, used to quantify DNA damage, assume single lesions are sufficient to block thermostable DNA polymerase progression. To explore this assumption, 90 base oligonucleotides containing normal or modified DNA bases were amplified using real-time PCR. Data implied that the PCR efficiency was influenced to differing degrees depending on which base lesion was present on the input oligonucleotide; specifically, while reactions with templates containing a single 8-oxo-7,8-dihydro-2í-deoxyguanosine (8-oxodG) were not noticeably altered, the presence of a single 8-oxo-7,8-dihydro-2í-deoxyadenosine, an abasic site, or a cis-syn thymidine dimer (TT dimer) dramatically delayed amplification. In addition, the presence of two tandem 8-oxodGs …

Www.Church: Consulting With 19th And 20th Century Congregations In A 21st Century World, Earl J. Pierce

Doctor of Ministry

A new pastor is called and excitement is high. Both the pastor and the congregation begin this joumey with high hopes and expectations. Yet too often things get off track quickly and people are left wondering what happened and why aren't things going in the direction we hoped?

The problem comes from a failure to understand the unique nature of a faith community. Understanding the nature includes an understanding of the roles of and the relationship between values, vision and mission in charting a course to the future of their ministry together. This failure in understanding also presents itself when …
