Global Attractivity Of A Circadian Pacemaker Model In A Periodic Environment, Yuming Chen, Lin Wang Jan 2005

Global Attractivity Of A Circadian Pacemaker Model In A Periodic Environment, Yuming Chen, Lin Wang

Mathematics Faculty Publications

In this paper, we propose a delay differential equation with continuous periodic parameters to model the circadian pacemaker in a periodic environment. First, we show the existence of a positive periodic solution by using the theory of coincidence degree. Then we establish the global attractivity of the periodic solution under two su±cient conditions. These conditions are easily verifiable and are independent of each other. Some numerical simulations are also performed to demonstrate the main results.

Accounting For Nonlinearities In Mathematical Modelling Of Quantum Dot Molecules, Roderick V.N. Melnik, Benny Lassen, L.C. Lew Yan Voon, Morten Willatzen, Calin Galeriu

Mathematics Faculty Publications

Nonlinear mathematical models are becoming increasingly important for new applications of low-dimensional semiconductor structures. Examples of such structures include quasi-zero-dimensional quantum dots that have potential applications ranging from quantum computing to nano-biological devices. In this contribution, we analyze presently dominating linear models for bandstructure calculations and demonstrate why nonlinear models are required for characterizing adequately opto- electronic properties of self-assembled quantum dots.

Statistical Sciences and Operations Research Publications

The paper describes the use of multiple objective decision analysis to qualitatively and quantitatively assess the quality of an endangered watershed and guide future efforts to improve the quality of the watershed. The Upham Brook watershed is an urban watershed that lies at the interface of declining inner city Richmond, Virginia and growth-oriented Henrico County. A section of stream within the watershed has been identified as so dangerously polluted that it threatens the health of the residents who live within the watershed boundaries. With funding provided by the National Science Foundation, the Upham Brook watershed project committee was formed to …

Days Of Our Spineless Lives: A Never Ending Saga, Lori Ihrig

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

This activity is an interdisciplinary method for engaging students in biological investigations through working with living aquatic invertebrates. The learning cycle begins with students conducting fieldwork to collect aquatic invertebrates. Students then think and propose ideas to create an observation record that they can use to study their organisms in the classroom. Finally, through the use of well-phrased questions along with wait-time, positive nonverbal responses, and non-judgmental responses, the teacher is an ally working with students in inquiry to generate the requirements of a final project. This article promotes National Science Education Content Standards, A, C, and F, and Iowa …

Use Of Radio-Telemetry To Reduce Bias In Nest Searching Utillzaci6n De Radiotransmisores Para Reducir El Sesgo En La Hiisqueda De Nidos, Larkin A. Powell, Jason Lang, David Krementz, Michael J. Conroy

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

We used traditional searching, as well as radio-telemetry, to find 125 Wood Thrush (Hylocichla mustelina) nests during 1994-1996 at the Piedmont National Wildlife Refuge in Georgia, USA. We compared daily nest survival rates for 66 nests of radio-marked birds with 59 nests of birds found through systematic searching. By using radio-telemetry, we found Wood Thrush nests in higher elevation pine habitats, in addition to the more usual hardwood forests with moist soils. We found nests of radio-marked birds farther from streams than nests found by systematic searching. Thirty-two percent of radio-marked birds' nests were found at the tops of slopes, …

Steroid Hormone Levels Are Related To Choice Of Colony Size In Cliff Swallows, Charles R. Brown, Mary Bomberger Brown, Samrrah A. Raouf, Linda C. Smith, John C. Wingfield Jan 2005

Steroid Hormone Levels Are Related To Choice Of Colony Size In Cliff Swallows, Charles R. Brown, Mary Bomberger Brown, Samrrah A. Raouf, Linda C. Smith, John C. Wingfield

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

One hypothesis to explain the extensive variation in colony size seen in most
taxa is that individuals sort themselves among groups based on phenotypic characteristics
that correlate with their performance in groups of different sizes. We investigated how
baseline levels of the steroid hormones, corticosterone and testosterone, were associated
with choice of colony size and the likelihood of moving to a different site in later years
in colonially nesting Cliff Swallows (Petrochelidon pyrrhonota) in southwestern Nebraska,
USA, in 2000–2004. We sampled hormone levels of birds caught at colonies and, using
mark–recapture, monitored their movement and choice of colony size …

An Appropriate Legislative Response To Cloning For Biomedical Research: The Case Against A Criminal Ban, Adam Gusman

Annals of Health Law and Life Sciences

An interesting approach to an oft-discussed bioethical issue, Mr. Gusman's article describes the processes of therapeutic and reproductive cloning, discusses the potential for technological and medical advancement, and suggests that a criminal ban on such scientific research would be less effective and more constitutionally questionable than other alternatives, such as tight legislative regulation or voluntary compliance with aspirational, industry-wide standards.

Gardening In A Bag: A Viable Alternative For Growing Bedding Plants In The Landscape, Clydette M. Alsup, Pamela A. Trewatha Jan 2005

Gardening In A Bag: A Viable Alternative For Growing Bedding Plants In The Landscape, Clydette M. Alsup, Pamela A. Trewatha

College of Agriculture

The rocky Ozarks soils make it difficult for some homeowners to establish ornamental gardens. An alternative to digging in rocky soils is planting into bags of potting soil. This study evaluated "Gardening in a Bag" for herbaceous bedding plants. The growth and appearance of Alternanthera, Capisum annuum, Dianthus, Gazania, Tagetes `Wave', and upright petunias, Salvia splendens, Spilanthes, Verbena, and Catharanthus roseus were evaluated in 2002 under two planting methods: in the ground vs. in bags of potting soil. Wave petunias, Dianthus, C. roseus, and Portulacagrandiflora were evaluated in 2003. All plants were mulched with 3 inches of coarse sawdust. In …

Monitoring Temporal Change In Riparian Vegetation Of Great Basin National Park, E. A. Beever, D. A. Pyke, J. C. Chambers, F. Landau, S. D. Smith, K. Murray

Life Sciences Faculty Research

Disturbance in riparian areas of semiarid ecosystems involves complex interactions of pulsed hydrologic flows, herbivory, fire, climatic effects, and anthropogenic influences. We resampled riparian vegetation within ten 10-m × 100-m plots that were initially sampled in 1992 in 4 watersheds of the Snake Range, east central Nevada. Our finding of significantly lower coverage of grasses, forbs, and shrubs within plots in 2001 compared with 1992 was not consistent with the management decision to remove livestock grazing from the watersheds in 1999. Change over time in cover of life-forms or bare ground was not predicted by scat counts within plots in …

Domain Growth Kinetics In Lithium Niobate Single Crystals Studied By Piezoresponse Force Microscopy, B. J. Rodriguez, R. J. Nemanich, A. I. Kingon, Alexei Gruverman, Sergei V. Kalinin, K. Terabe, X. Y. Liu, K. Kitamura

Alexei Gruverman Publications

The kinetics of sidewise domain growth in an inhomogeneous electric field has been investigated in stoichiometric LiNbO3 single crystals by measuring the lateral domain size as a function of the voltage pulse magnitude and duration using piezoresponse force microscopy. The domain size increases linearly with the voltage magnitude suggesting that the domain size is kinetically limited in a wide range of pulse magnitudes and durations. In spite of that, the written domains exhibit strong retention behavior. It is suggested that the switching behavior can be described by the universal scaling curve. Domain kinetics can be described as an activation …

Selenotrisulfide Derivative Of Alpha-Lipoic Acid: Evaluation In A Cell Culture Model For Potential Use As A Topical Antioxidant, Melenie Lee Alonis Jan 2005

Selenotrisulfide Derivative Of Alpha-Lipoic Acid: Evaluation In A Cell Culture Model For Potential Use As A Topical Antioxidant, Melenie Lee Alonis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Selenium is a required micronutrient in mammalian cells. It is incorporated in the form of selenocysteine into selenoenzymes such as glutathione peroxidase and thioredoxin reductase, and is absolutely required for activity. Thioredoxin reductase is necessary for reduction of oxidized thioredoxin and therefore plays a major role in maintaining the redox status of the cell. Glutathione peroxidase is responsible for reducing peroxides into their corresponding alcohols and water. Together, these selenoenzymes constitute a significant part of the cell's arsenal to defend itself against oxidative stress. Exogenous sources of oxidative stress, such as UV radiation, are capable of generating reactive oxygen species …

Session-Based Intrusion Detection System To Map Anomalous Network Traffic, Bruce Caulkins Jan 2005

Session-Based Intrusion Detection System To Map Anomalous Network Traffic, Bruce Caulkins

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Computer crime is a large problem (CSI, 2004; Kabay, 2001a; Kabay, 2001b). Security managers have a variety of tools at their disposal -- firewalls, Intrusion Detection Systems (IDSs), encryption, authentication, and other hardware and software solutions to combat computer crime. Many IDS variants exist which allow security managers and engineers to identify attack network packets primarily through the use of signature detection; i.e., the IDS recognizes attack packets due to their well-known "fingerprints" or signatures as those packets cross the network's gateway threshold. On the other hand, anomaly-based ID systems determine what is normal traffic within a network and reports …

The Influences Of System Affiliation, Size, And Location On Bioterrorism Preparedness Among Florida Hospitals, Kourtney Scharoun Jan 2005

The Influences Of System Affiliation, Size, And Location On Bioterrorism Preparedness Among Florida Hospitals, Kourtney Scharoun

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the event of a bioterrorist attack, emergency departments are considered the first line of response for all acute levels of care. This study focused on hospital emergency departments in Florida and the activities, policies, and procedures involved in preparing for a bioterrorist attack. Hospital size, location, and system affiliation were related to attaining these levels, and their impact was assessed. Through a cross-sectional survey design, the physical properties of the 77 hospitals (i.e. facilities, equipment, communication systems, etc.), and the social characteristics of the organizations (managerial functions including: planning, training, financial, and environmental characteristics) were examined. One-way analysis of …

Phylogenetics Of Rubus Ursinus And R. Macraai (Rosaceae): Evidence Of Hybrid Origin, Brittany Sutherland Jan 2005

Phylogenetics Of Rubus Ursinus And R. Macraai (Rosaceae): Evidence Of Hybrid Origin, Brittany Sutherland

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

This study had three goals: elucidating the affinity between Rubus ursin us and Rubus macraei, assessing the hybrid origin of both species, and determining closely related species that may be putative parents. To this end, three chloroplast DNA regions-rp1l6, trnK, trnL-tmF-and two nuclear DNA regions-the ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and granule-bound starch synthase (GBSSI)-were sequenced for five R. ursinus individuals, including 6x, 8x, l lx, 12x, and 13x ploidy levels, and R. macraei, which is hexaploid. Sequence data were placed into an existing framework of a Rubus phylogeny. Three phylogenies were created that demonstrate a close association between R. …
