Worldview, Science And The Understanding Of Nature, William W. Cobern Jan 2005

Worldview, Science And The Understanding Of Nature, William W. Cobern

Scientific Literacy and Cultural Studies Project

I am drawn to Nature because I see in Nature the handwork of God and I wonder what are our responsibilities as stewards of Nature? Being of a scientific bent, I wonder how Nature works? I wonder how Nature came to be? In other words, my thoughts– my everyday thoughts– about Nature are rooted in deep, fundamental beliefs that I hold about my life and the world in which I live, that is, my worldview. Nature of course is the traditional domain in which the “natural” sciences operate, but how we understand science and Nature is rooted in our worldview. …

Positive Feedback Between Tree Establishment And Patterns Of Subalpine Forest Advancement, Glacier National Park, Montana, U.S.A., Matthew F. Bekker Jan 2005

Positive Feedback Between Tree Establishment And Patterns Of Subalpine Forest Advancement, Glacier National Park, Montana, U.S.A., Matthew F. Bekker

Wasatch Dendroclimatology Research

The development and maintenance of several types of visually striking vegetation patterns are controlled by positive feedback between pattern and process. These patterns are particularly common at ecotones, where the influence of positive feedback may affect the position and dynamics of the boundary between the adjacent biotic communities. In this study, I use dendrochronology to examine the role of feedback between existing trees and the establishment and survival of seedlings in the advancement of linear, finger-like strips of subalpine forest in Glacier National Park, Montana. A general upslope, windward to leeward pattern of older trees followed by progressively younger trees …

Actions Of A Partial D2-Like Agonist During Low Or High Dopaminergic Tone: A Neurochemical Study Using Preweanling Rats, Shelly Taeko Yoshida Jan 2005

Actions Of A Partial D2-Like Agonist During Low Or High Dopaminergic Tone: A Neurochemical Study Using Preweanling Rats, Shelly Taeko Yoshida

Theses Digitization Project

The neurochemical effects of partial D2-like agonists (i.e., terguride) to alter striatal DOPA accumulation under high and low dopaminergic tone was examined in preweanling rats. The results indicate that terguride has agonist-like (quinpirole-like) effects under a low dopaminergic tone and antagonist-like (haloperidol-like) effects under a high dopaminergic tone during the preweanling period.

Translingual Literature: The Bone People And Borderlands, Jill Marie Murphy Jan 2005

Translingual Literature: The Bone People And Borderlands, Jill Marie Murphy

Theses Digitization Project

This thesis proposes that by producing and existing within a translingual text, the ethnofeminist has found a way to subvert others' construction of her and redefine her identity. In particular, the ethnofeminist uses code switching to select and reinvent meaning from the language system of the dominant culture while maintaining the language system of the "marginal" group. In combining two (or more) language systems within a literature she has created her own language.

Optimization Of A Sequential Alignment Verification And Positioning System (Savps) For Proton Radiosurgery, Mahesh Raj Neupane

Theses Digitization Project

Functional proton-beam stereotactic radiosurgery requires sub-millimeter alignment accuracy. A patient tracking system called Sequential Alignment and Position Verification System (SAVPS) is under development at Loma Linda University Medical Center. An optical positioning system (OPS), manufactured by Vicon Peak, has been chosen to verify the correct alignment of the target with the proton beam axis. The main objective of this thesis is to optimize an existing version of SAVPS by conducting error analysis. An image processing algorithm was developed and applied to estimate the error introduced by the Patient Positioning System (PPS) in order to derive the true error of the …

Edaphic Specialization In Tropical Trees: Physiological Correlates And Responses To Reciprocal Transplantation, Jennifer L. Baltzer, Sean C. Thomas, R. Nilus, D.F.R.P. Burslem

Biology Faculty Publications

Recent research has documented the importance of edaphic factors in determining the habitat associations of tree species in many tropical rain forests, but the underlying mechanisms for edaphic associations are unclear. At Sepilok Forest Reserve, Sabah, Malaysian Borneo, two main soil types derived from sandstone (ridges) and alluvium (valleys) differ in nutrient and water availability and are characterized by forests differing markedly in species composition, structure, and understory light availability. We use both survey and reciprocal transplants to examine physiological adaptations to differences in light, nutrient, and water availability between these soil types, and test for the importance of resource-use …

Cytokinin Accumulation And An Altered Ethylene Response Mediate The Pleiotropic Phenotype Of The Pea Nodulation Mutant R50 (Sym16), Brett J. Ferguson, Ericka M. Wiebe, R.J. Neil Emery, Frédérique C. Guinel Jan 2005

Cytokinin Accumulation And An Altered Ethylene Response Mediate The Pleiotropic Phenotype Of The Pea Nodulation Mutant R50 (Sym16), Brett J. Ferguson, Ericka M. Wiebe, R.J. Neil Emery, Frédérique C. Guinel

Biology Faculty Publications

R50 (sym16), a pleiotropic mutant of Pisum sativum L., is short, has thickened internodes and roots, and has a reduced number of lateral roots and nodules. Its low nodule phenotype can be restored with the application of ethylene inhibitors; furthermore, it can be mimicked by applying cytokinins (CKs) to the roots of the parent line #8216;Sparkle’. Here, we report on the etiolation phenotypes of R50 and ‘Sparkle’, and on the interactive roles of ethylene and CKs in these lines. R50 displayed an altered etiolation phenotype, as it was shorter and thicker, and had more developed leaves than dark-grown …
