Decapod Crustaceans Of The Flower Gardens Banks National Marine Sanctuary, Mary K. Wicksten
Decapod Crustaceans Of The Flower Gardens Banks National Marine Sanctuary, Mary K. Wicksten
Gulf of Mexico Science
Since 1985, new sampling and reexamination of existing specimens have resulted in the finding of more than 25 additional decapod crustacean species at the Flower Gardens Banks National Marine Sanctuary. Of the 106 species of decapods that inhabit the Sanctuary, the predominant groups are the families Alpheidae, Palaemonidae, Paguridae, Diogenidae, Mithracidae, and Panopeidae. The West Flower Gardens Bank has the most diverse fauna of the areas sampled (60 species). Stetson Bank has 14 species that have not been found on the Flower Gardens Banks proper. Three species are typically found on mooring lines and oil platforms. Differences in bottom type …

Shrimp Landing Trends As Indicators Of Estuarine Habitat Quality, Thomas P. O'Connor, Gary C. Matlock
Shrimp Landing Trends As Indicators Of Estuarine Habitat Quality, Thomas P. O'Connor, Gary C. Matlock
Gulf of Mexico Science
Penaeid shrimp support three major commercial fisheries in the Gulf of Mexico. They are an estuarine-dependent species with life cycles that are completed within 1 yr. The stocks are fully exploited. Landings are independent of effort in that increased effort would not increase landings. Landings are therefore a direct measure of stock. Because the penaeids are annual species, landings are also a measure of recruitment. Since recruitment is dependent on habitat quality, landings are a measure of habitat quality and temporal trends in annual landings reveal trends in estuarine habitat quality. The landings trends indicate diminished habitat quality in Florida …

Regulation Of The Vibrio Anguillarum Metalloprotease Empa By Posttranslational Modification, Andrew M. Staroscik, Steven M. Denkin, David R. Nelson

The zinc metalloprotease EmpA is a virulence factor in the fish pathogen Vibrio anguillarum. Previous studies have shown that two strains of V. anguillarum regulate empA differently. Strain M93Sm exhibits protease activity only in the presence of fish gastrointestinal mucus, while protease activity is detected in NB10 culture supernatant under all stationary-phase conditions. In this study, we use real-time reverse transcription-PCR to show that even in conditions where no protease activity is detected, empA transcription occurs. Western blot analysis revealed that EmpA is secreted as a ∼48-kDa proenzyme and that activation occurs extracellularly by the removal of a ∼10-kDa …

All members of the Src family of nonreceptor protein tyrosine kinases are phosphorylated and subsequently down-regulated by the C-terminal Src kinase, Csk. Although the recognition of Src protein substrates is essential for a diverse set of signaling events linked to cellular growth and differentiation, the factors controlling this critical protein-protein interaction are not well known. To understand how Csk recognizes Src, the chemical/physical events that modulate apparent substrate affinity and turnover were investigated. Src is phosphorylated in a biphasic manner in rapid quench flow experiments, suggesting that the phosphoryl transfer step is fast and highly favorable and does not limit …

In his seminal book on The Ecology of Invasions by Animals and Plants, Elton (1958) laid the foundation for the science of biological invasions. He identified the importance of human-mediated vectors as means of transporting organisms to new locations and discussed invasions in the context of ecological impacts and evolutionary consequences. Elton even identified what needed to be done to prevent practical and ecological damages from invaders--keep them out, eradicate them, and if all else fails, manage them at acceptable levels. We have not been vigilant in applying this knowledge to marine ecosystems, although this is changing. Our ability to …

Happiness And Public Policy, Lok Sang Ho
Happiness And Public Policy, Lok Sang Ho
Centre for Public Policy Studies : CPPS Working Paper Series
In recent years many scholars are studying “happiness” seriously. Economics, long known as the dismal science, has a well established “utility theory” but utility should not be treated synonymously as happiness. This paper questions some premises of the Benthamite theory that presumes utility is the same as happiness and proposes a theory that there are three kinds of happiness: a forward looking or “prospective happiness,” a “happiness in process,” and a backward looking or “retrospective happiness.” It suggests that perceptions and value formation, which are normally outside the purview of economics, are important determinants of happiness. It further argues that …
Child Labor And The Interaction Between The Quantity And Quality Of Children, Chengze, Simon Fan
Child Labor And The Interaction Between The Quantity And Quality Of Children, Chengze, Simon Fan
Centre for Public Policy Studies : CPPS Working Paper Series
This paper analyzes the impacts of child labor on the interaction between the quantity and quality of children in the spirit of Becker and Lewis (1973). It shows that without child labor, the quantity of children can be a normal good so that it increases with parental income under some fairly standard formulations. However, the correlation between fertility and parental income becomes negative when the role of child labor is considered. The model also implies that fertility increases with the wage rate of child labor. Moreover, it suggests that government intervention not only directly affects the supply of child labor, …

Identification Of A New Family Of Enzymes With Potential O-Acetylpeptidoglycan Esterase Activity In Both Gram-Positive And Gram-Negative Bacteria, Joel T. Weadge, John M. Pfeffer, Anthony J. Clarke

Background: The metabolism of the rigid bacterial cell wall heteropolymer peptidoglycan is a dynamic process requiring continuous biosynthesis and maintenance involving the coordination of both lytic and synthetic enzymes. The O-acetylation of peptidoglycan has been proposed to provide one level of control on these activities as this modification inhibits the action of the major endogenous lytic enzymes, the lytic transglycosylases. The O-acetylation of peptidoglycan also inhibits the activity of the lysozymes which serve as the first line of defense of host cells against the invasion of bacterial pathogens. Despite this central importance, there is a dearth of information …

Maine Horseshoe Crab (Limulus Polyphemus) Spawning Surveys, 2004, Susanne Schaller, Peter Thayer, Sherry Hanson, Shari Latulippe, Elizabeth Solet
Publications
The Maine Horseshoe Crab Surveys were begun in 2001 to establish quantitative baseline data and determine whether horseshoe crab (Limulus polyphemus) populations are stable or declining. Spawning counts were conducted at sites from Casco Bay (southern Maine) to Frenchman’s Bay (downeast), to establish an index of relative abundance. Few (relatively) abundant populations remain in Maine at Middle Bay (Harpswell/Brunswick), Thomas Point (Brunswick), and in the Damariscotta River. Healthy but less abundant populations persist in the Bagaduce River (Brooksville/ Sedgwick) and in Taunton Bay (Hancock/Franklin/Sullivan).
An intensive tagging study has been conducted on Taunton Bay, which offers a natural population with …

Changes in global climate have raised concerns about the emergence and resurgence of infectious diseases. Vibrio cholerae is a reemerging pathogen that proliferates and is transported on marine particles. Patterns of cholera outbreaks correlate with sea surface temperature increases, but the underlying mechanisms for rapid proliferation of V. cholerae during ocean warming events have yet to be fully elucidated. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that autochthonous marine bacteria impede the spread of V. cholerae in the marine environment. It was found that some marine bacteria are capable of inhibiting the growth of V. cholerae on surfaces and that …
