Observations On Five Coral Diseases And Coral Bleaching Along The North And West Coasts Of Dominica, West Indies : A Capstone Project ..., Jeremy Kerr
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Scleractinian diseases and bleaching have been studied for about 30 years. And yet, very little is known about the vectors, pathogens, and long-term effects of coral disease and coral bleaching. In the 1990s, the reported number of coral diseases escalated significantly. Black Band Disease, White Plague, Dark Spot Syndrome, Yellow Blotch Disease, Aspergillosis, and Coral Bleaching events have been identified and reported in the coral reef ecosystems of Dominica since 2000. This study aims to add to the knowledge base of these coral afflictions around Dominica. The data collected in this survey are from the north and west shores of …

Policy Analysis Of Invasive Species Regulations In Sydney Harbour And San Francisco Bay, Alexis Radovich, Christina Schmunk
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
The demand for the mass transportation of goods throughout the world is threatening the biodiversity and native habitats of local scale aquatic assemblages. Efforts to preserve and protect marine communities are hampered by the danger of invasive species coming into native harbor community assemblages. In order to manage and conserve these ecosystems, it is necessary that we research and compiled the species in order to gain a better understanding of how legislation and regulations can be used in order to create systems that are sustainable for all species. The goal of this capstone is to examine current and past legislation …
Water Resources On The Monterey Peninsula : How The Efficient Use Of Water Through Increased Conservation, Water Reuse, And Aquifer Storage And Recovery Can Help To Meet Water Demands In The Urban Sector : A Capstone Project ..., Jessica Sharkey
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
As the population along our nation's coastline continues to increase, greater demands are placed on potable water supplies. In response to this and the contamination of groundwater and surface water due to pollution, communities such as the Monterey Peninsula are looking for alternatives to alleviate water supply problems. However, the development of new water supplies can be costly and have adverse environmental impacts. Through an extensive literature review and communication with experts in their respective fields, recommendations are made as to the best options available to meet current water demands without the development of new water supplies. An emphasis is …
Topographic Complexity And Benthic Community Variability Within A Kelp Forest In Monterey Bay, Ca : A Thesis ..., Eric J. Sandoval
Topographic Complexity And Benthic Community Variability Within A Kelp Forest In Monterey Bay, Ca : A Thesis ..., Eric J. Sandoval
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
By understanding species and habitat associations, predictions of species composition can be made about a benthic community based on available habitat. In a kelp forest, topographic complexity can affect an organism, by modifying flow, altering food availability, altering light availability, and provide refuges and barriers that fragment the habitat. There are many qualitative ways to evaluate topographic complexity. Rugosity is a quantitative measure and is defined as the ratio of surface area to planar area. Using habitat maps developed in GIS from multibeam bathymetry data, regions of varying rugosity were mapped in southern Monterey Bay, CA. Associated benthic communities were …

Nature fashions a very large number of diverse products (molecular weights ranging from ca. 200 to 2000 daltons) from simple monomeric metabolites used in primary metabolism. These include polyketide scaffolds generated from the simple C₃ malonyl CoA and C₄ methylmalonyl CoA monomers and nonribosomal peptides made from both the 20 proteinogenic amino acids and dozens of nonpoteinogenic amino acids.¹ A large family of terpenoid skeletons are built from the Δ²- and Δ³-alkene isomers of the biological isoprene monomer, isoprenyl-pyrophosphate.²

2005 State Of The Bay Report, Casco Bay Estuary Partnership
Publications
Casco Bay abounds in marine life and scenic beauty, but how healthy is the bay? To answer that question, we must look at many aspects of a complex ecosystem in which air, land and water interact with the humans and wildlife that share the resources of the bay. The State of the Bay 2005 is an attempt to gauge the overall health of this system by looking at some of its components and the forces driving change.

ABSTRACT. Little is known about the breeding biology of the Le Conte's Sparrow (Ammodramus leconteil), probably because of its secretive nature. We provide new information on several aspects of Le Conte's Sparrow breeding biology, including rates of nest parasitism by Brown-headed Cowbirds (Molothrus ater) and potential factors affecting breeding densities and nesting success of the species. Our study was conducted in the tallgrass prairie of northwestern Minnesota and southeastern North Dakota during 1998-2002. Breeding densities varied among years, but this variation was not clearly linked to climatic patterns. Vegetation had some influence on densities of Le …
Habitat Preferences Of Migrant And Wintering Northern Harriers In Northwestern Texas, Caroll D. Littlefield, Douglas H. Johnson
Habitat Preferences Of Migrant And Wintering Northern Harriers In Northwestern Texas, Caroll D. Littlefield, Douglas H. Johnson
United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications
We studied habitat preferences of northern harriers (Circus cyaneus) in 4 counties of the Southern High Plains of northwestern Texas from October 1989 to May 1995. Harriers generally arrived in late July and departed in April. They hunted over a variety of habitats in the study area but mainly in Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) grasslands and vegetated playa basins. CRP grasslands, playa basins, and shortgrass prairie were used disproportionately to their availability, whereas winter wheat was used less than its availability. Brown harriers (adult females or subadults of either sex) foraged in CRP about as often as adult …

The extent of gene polymorphisms associated with resistance to chloroquine and sulfadoxinepyrimethamine was examined in field isolates of Plasmodium falciparum from Indonesia. Eight malaria-endemic areas, representing a broad region of the western and eastern Indonesian Archipelago were surveyed. Blood from 20−50 patients was collected at each site, DNA was isolated, and the sequences of four different genes (dihydrofolate reductase [dhfr], dihydropteroate synthase [dhps], P. falciparum multidrug resistance 1 [pfmdr1], and P. falciparum chloroquine resistance transporter [pfcrt]) were analyzed using polymerase chain reaction and restriction fragment length polymorphisms to detect polymorphisms previously shown …

Novel Plasmodium Vivax Dhfr Alleles From The Indonesian Archipelago And Papua New Guinea: Association With Pyrimethamine Resistance Determined By A Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Expression System, Michele D. Hastings, Jason D. Maguire, Michael J. Bangs, Peter A. Zimmerman, John C. Reeder, J. Kevin Baird, Carol Hopkins Sibley
United States Navy: Publications
In plasmodia, the dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR) enzyme is the target of the pyrimethamine component of sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (S/P). Plasmodium vivax infections are not treated intentionally with antifolates. However, outside Africa, coinfections with Plasmodium falciparum and P. vivax are common, and P. vivax infections are often exposed to S/P. Cloning of the P. vivax dhfr gene has allowed molecular comparisons of dhfr alleles from different regions. Examination of the dhfr locus from a few locations has identified a very diverse set of alleles and showed that mutant alleles of the vivax dhfr gene are prevalent in Southeast Asia where S/P has been …

Implicit Cognition And Dissocative Experiences As Predictors Of Adolescent Substance Use, Susan L. Ames, Steve Sussman, Clyde W. Dent, Alan W. Stacy
CGU Faculty Publications and Research
The present study evaluated the mediating role of implicit cognitive processes in the prediction of alcohol and marijuana use and examined the relationships between dissociative experiences, implicit processes, and sensation seeking in models of drug use and problem experiences. Participants were 467 diverse at-risk adolescents in California. Results from latent variable models revealed that implicit cognition independently predicted alcohol and marijuana use and mediated the predictive effects of sensation seeking on drug use. Dissociative experiences did not predict implicit cognition or drug use in this sample, though this factor was a significant predictor of problem experiences and was positively correlated …

Particulate Matter Exposure Impairs Systemic Microvascular Endothelium-Dependent Dilation, Timothy R. Nurkiewicz, Dale W. Porter, Mark Barger, Vincent Castranova, Matthew A. Boegehold
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
Acute exposure to airborne pollutants, such as solid particulate matter (PM), increases the risk of cardiovascular dysfunction, but the mechanisms by which PM evokes systemic effects remain to be identified. The purpose of this study was to determine if pulmonary exposure to a PM surrogate, such as residual oil fly ash (ROFA), affects endothelium-dependent dilation in the systemic microcirculation. Rats were intratracheally instilled with ROFA at 0.1, 0.25, 1 or 2 mg/rat 24 hr before experimental measurements. Rats intratracheally instilled with saline or titanium dioxide (0.25 mg/rat) served as vehicle or particle control groups, respectively. In vivo microscopy of the …

Tracking Alu Evolution In New World Primates, David A. Ray, Mark A. Batzer
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
Background
Alu elements are Short INterspersed Elements (SINEs) in primate genomes that have proven useful as markers for studying genome evolution, population biology and phylogenetics. Most of these applications, however, have been limited to humans and their nearest relatives, chimpanzees. In an effort to expand our understanding of Alusequence evolution and to increase the applicability of these markers to non-human primate biology, we have analyzed available Alu sequences for loci specific to platyrrhine (New World) primates.
Results
Branching patterns along an Alu sequence phylogeny indicate three major classes of platyrrhine-specific Alu sequences. Sequence comparisons further reveal at least three …
