Analysis Of The Learning-Style Preferences Of Entry-Level, Upper-Division Undergraduate/Graduate Students In Allied Health Identified With Analytic And Global Format Learning-Style Assessments, Dawn Marie Morton-Rias
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this researcher was to identify learning styles of undergraduate and graduate students in allied health and to examine correlations among identified learning-style scores and students’ gender, ethnicity, and age. The goals were to compare learning-style preferences and provide students, faculty, staff, and administrators with empirical information on student learning. One hundred and fifty-four ethnically diverse students participated in the study. The Productivity Environmental Preference Survey (PEPS) (Dunn & Dunn, & Price, 1996) and Building Excellence (BE) (Rundle & Dunn, 2000) were completed by a sample of 87 students. Correlation analyses confirmed relationships between student learning-styles identified with …
A Content Analysis Of Seventeen Magazine And The Messages Its Articles And Advertisements Are Sending To Teenage Girls, Cheryl Fuller
A Content Analysis Of Seventeen Magazine And The Messages Its Articles And Advertisements Are Sending To Teenage Girls, Cheryl Fuller
Capstone Research Projects
Seventeen magazine has been one of the top-selling teen fashion magazines since its debut in 1944. Girls pour through its colorful pages, looking for advice about clothing, makeup, boys, and anything else they may want to know. They may be getting this advice, but what other messages is Seventeen sending its young readers? Many parents worry about these messages, sometimes expressing their complaints about the way Seventeen discusses sex and appearance. Researchers have studied some of the messages and have both positive and negative things to say about the magazine and the messages it is sending its readers. This research …

Asymptotic Behavior Of A System Of Linear Fractional Difference Equations, Mustafa Rs Kulenović, M. Nurkanović
Asymptotic Behavior Of A System Of Linear Fractional Difference Equations, Mustafa Rs Kulenović, M. Nurkanović
Mathematics Faculty Publications
We investigate the global asymptotic behavior of solutions of the system of difference equations xn+1 = (a + xn)/(b + yn), yn+1 = (d + yn)(e + xn), n = 0,1…, where the parameters a, b, d, and e are positive numbers and the initial conditions x0 and y0 are arbitrary nonnegative numbers. We obtain some asymptotic results for the positive equilibrium, of this system.
Droop Models Of Nutrient–Plankton Interaction With Intratrophic Predation, S. R.-J. Jang, J. Baglama
Droop Models Of Nutrient–Plankton Interaction With Intratrophic Predation, S. R.-J. Jang, J. Baglama
Mathematics Faculty Publications
Droop models of nutrient–phytoplankton–zooplankton interaction with intratrophic predation of zooplankton are introduced and investigated. The models proposed in this study are open ecosystems which include both a constant and a periodic input nutrient models. A simple stochastic model mimics a randomly varying nutrient input is also presented. For the deterministic models it is shown analytically that intratrophic predation has no effect on the global asymptotic dynamics of the systems if either one of the populations has a negative growth rate. Numerical simulations are also used to investigate the effects of intratrophic predation. Unlike the deterministic models for which both populations …

The Salary Debate, Sarah C. Mckenzie, Gary W. Ritter
The Salary Debate, Sarah C. Mckenzie, Gary W. Ritter
Policy Briefs
In America, teacher compensation has undergone major changes over the last 200 years. Throughout much of the early 19th century, teachers were often paid with room and board within a community and taught all grades. Around 1921, a form of the single salary schedule still in use today was implemented (Protsik, 1995), where teachers’ salaries were linked to their educational background and their years in the field. Like the salaries of most other public officials, however, teachers’ salaries shift with changing social, economic, and political climates. The pay rate for teachers is also influenced by a number of variables (e.g. …

Assessing Big Sagebrush At Multiple Spatial Sites, Mike Karl, Jon Sadowski
United States Bureau of Land Management: Staff Publications
This technical note describes how big sagebrush habitats (Artemisia tridentata, including Wyoming, basin, and mountain subspecies) are being assessed and managed at multiple spatial scales within a Bureau of Land Management resource area in southeast Oregon. It shows how the assessment results can be used to make determinations pertaining to standards and guidelines for greater sage-grouse and other animals that use sagebrush habitats. In this example, the assessment included information at the broad-scale (Interior Columbia Basin Ecosystem Management Project; 145 million acres), mid-scale (Southeast Oregon Resource Management Plan-Final Environmental Impact Statement; 4.6 million acres, and Louse Canyon Geographic …
Overview Of Attachment Disorder And Effective Treatments For Children, Kathryn H. Hedican
Overview Of Attachment Disorder And Effective Treatments For Children, Kathryn H. Hedican
Graduate Research Papers
When children experience extreme chronic trauma as a result of the effects of the disruption of healthy attachment patterns, a disorder known as Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD) can develop. The importance for mental health counselors to understand the etiology of RAD cannot be overemphasized. Symptoms most often associated with this disorder include the inability to trust, failure to develop intimate relationships, or show affection, lack of self-confidence, low self-esteem, and anti-social behaviors and attitudes (Levy & Orlans, 1998 as cited in Sheperis, Renfro-Michel, & Doggett, 2003). Highlighting the foundational work of Erikson, Harlow, Bowlby, and Ainsworth includes a brief overview …

Historical Responses Of Marine Turtles To Global Climate Change And Juvenile Loggerhead Recruitment In Florida, Joshua Reece
Historical Responses Of Marine Turtles To Global Climate Change And Juvenile Loggerhead Recruitment In Florida, Joshua Reece
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Marine turtle conservation is most successful when it is based on sound data incorporating life history, historical population stability, and gene flow among populations. This research attempts to provide that information through two studies. In chapter I, I identify historical patterns of gene flow, population sizes, and contraction/expansion during major climatic shifts. In chapter II, I reveal a life history characteristic of loggerhead turtles previously undocumented. I identify a pattern of juvenile recruitment to foraging grounds proximal to their natal nesting beach. This pattern results in a predictable recruitment pattern from juvenile foraging ground aggregations to local rookeries. This research …

Registered Nurses' Attitudes Toward The Protection Of Gays And Lesbians In The Workplace: An Examination Of Homophobia And Discriminatory Beliefs, Christopher Wright Blackwell
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Discrimination and inequality encountered by gays and lesbians in the United States is profuse. A cornerstone of the gay rights movement, equality in the workplace has been a pivotal struggle for gays and lesbians. This study examined the attitudes and opinions of registered nurses (RNs) regarding homosexuals in general and the protection of homosexuals in the workplace through a nondiscrimination policy. The author measured overall homophobic and discriminatory beliefs of the sample using the Attitudes Toward Lesbian and Gay Men (ATLG) Scale; the demographic questionnaire was infused with questions regarding a protective workplace policy. Using T-tests, one-way analysis of variance …
Native And Invasive Competitors Of The Eastern Oyster Crassostrea Virginica In Mosquito Lagoon, Florida, Michelle Boudreaux
Native And Invasive Competitors Of The Eastern Oyster Crassostrea Virginica In Mosquito Lagoon, Florida, Michelle Boudreaux
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Populations of Crassostrea virginica within Mosquito Lagoon, Florida have recently undergone significant die-offs, which are a subject of major concern. Restoration efforts within Mosquito Lagoon are focusing on reconstructing the three-dimensional reef habitats. Before effective protocols can be established, however, important questions about the sources of juvenile and adult oyster mortality must be answered. Potential causes of Crassostrea virginica mortality in the Indian River Lagoon system include sediment loads, competition, predation, and disease. My research focused on the interactions between oysters and the competitors that may affect the settlement, growth, and survival of Crassostrea virginica. The four objectives of my …

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Environmental interpretation allows people to gain an understanding of their surroundings, know why the environment is important and to have a greater appreciation for the environment as a whole. By creating a visitors center in Santa Cruz the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary would like to create educational programs for the public and students to make people more environmentally aware. The overall goal for my project was to compile a database of informal science education centers in the Monterey and Santa Cruz areas, compile a database of schools in Santa Cruz County and use this information to aid in the …

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
The most devastating aspect of cancer is the emergence of metastases. Thus, identification of potentially metastatic cells among a tumor cell population and the underlying molecular changes that switch cells to a metastatic state are among the most important issues in cancer biology. Here we show that, although normal human colonic epithelial cells lack the glycosphingolipid globotriaosylceramide (Gb3), this molecule is highly expressed in metastatic colon cancer. In addition, a subpopulation of cells that are greatly enriched in Gb3 and have an invasive phenotype was identified in human colon cancer cell lines. In epithelial cells in culture, …

Until 1995, all papers that claimed preparation or further study with monoiodo-8-quinolinol were really working with the 7-iodo isomer. Of the 83 relevant citations 67 dealt with incorrect structural assignments, 13 were critiqued due to errors made in synthesis and interpretation, and 9 had the correct structural assignments. This literature review made the following conclusions apparent. 1. Prototropic forms of 8- quinolinol influence orientation of electrophiles. 2. Under strong acidic conditions, the 5 position is favored. 3. Under mild acidic conditions, mixtures of 5 and 7 substituted compounds are formed. 4. Under basic conditions, the incoming electrophile favors the 7 …

Statistics is a wonderfully diverse profession and graduate students making career choices have many options — especially in light of the dearth of students moving into the statistical sciences today. The three main career paths at the PhD level are in academics, industry/business and government. Each of these job types offers its own mix of intellectual challenges, financial reward, pressure and security. How a new researcher selects (or is selected by) a specific occupation in the statistical sciences sometimes seems more a function of luck than of conscious decision making. This consideration was one of the first concerns addressed by …

Experiments were conducted to test several hypotheses on methods for improving document classification for the malicious insider threat problem within the Intelligence Community. Bag-of-words (BOW) representations of documents were compared to Natural Language Processing (NLP) based representations in both the typical and one-class classification problems using the Support Vector Machine algorithm. Results show that the NLP features significantly improved classifier performance over the BOW approach both in terms of precision and recall, while using many fewer features. The one-class algorithm using NLP features demonstrated robustness when tested on new domains.
