Effect Of Grazing, Mowing, Or Herbicide On Leafy Spurge Control, Kelly W. Bruns, Alexander J. Smart Jan 2005

Effect Of Grazing, Mowing, Or Herbicide On Leafy Spurge Control, Kelly W. Bruns, Alexander J. Smart

South Dakota Beef Report, 2005

Leafy spurge (euphorbia esula L.) is an herbaceous perennial which is deep rooted and can reproduce by seeds and rhizomes. First introduced into North America in the 1800’s from Europe, it now covers 25 states in the USA and several provinces in Canada. It is a major concern in North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Montana, and Nebraska. Leafy spurge is considered a noxious weed that is extremely competitive, establishing itself in pastureland and roadsides. Bangsund et al. (1997) estimated that by 2005, uncontrolled leafy spurge acres would reach 18.5 million in the Northern Great Plains. The cost of leafy spurge …

Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications

The National Biological Information Infrastructure (NBII) is an electronic information network that provides access to biological data and information on our nation’s plants, animals, and ecosystems. Information contributed by federal, state, and local government agencies; non-government organizations; and private-sector organizations is linked through the NBII gateway and made accessible to a variety of audiences, including researchers, natural resource managers, decision-makers, educators, students, and other members of the general public. Implementation of the NBII is being accomplished through the development of "nodes" that serve as entry points to the network. These nodes function as fully digital, distributed, and interactive systems that …

Planar-To-Tubular Structural Transition In Boron Clusters: B20 As The Embryo Of Single-Walled Boron Nanotubes, Boggavarapu Kiran, Satya S. Bulusu, Hua-Jin Zhai, Soohaeng Yoo, Xiao Cheng Zeng, Lai-Sheng Wang Jan 2005

Planar-To-Tubular Structural Transition In Boron Clusters: B20 As The Embryo Of Single-Walled Boron Nanotubes, Boggavarapu Kiran, Satya S. Bulusu, Hua-Jin Zhai, Soohaeng Yoo, Xiao Cheng Zeng, Lai-Sheng Wang

Xiao Cheng Zeng Publications

Experimental and computational simulations revealed that boron clusters, which favor planar (2D) structures up to 18 atoms, prefer 3D structures beginning at 20 atoms. Using global optimization methods, we found that the B20 neutral cluster has a double-ring tubular structure with a diameter of 5.2 Å. For the B20- anion, the tubular structure is shown to be isoenergetic to 2D structures, which were observed and confirmed by photoelectron spectroscopy. The 2D-to-3D structural transition observed at B20, reminiscent of the ring-to-fullerene transition at C20 in carbon clusters, suggests it may be considered as the embryo …
