Method Of Identifying And Treating Invasive Carcinomas (Cip), Xinqing Chai, Julie Chao, Lee Chao, Limei Chen Mar 2005

Method Of Identifying And Treating Invasive Carcinomas (Cip), Xinqing Chai, Julie Chao, Lee Chao, Limei Chen

UCF Patents

Prostasin protein has been found to be a useful marker for determination of the invasiveness of and as a means to treat human carcinomas. Using RT-PCR and western blot analyses, prostasin protein and mRNA expression were found in normal human prostate epithelial cells and the human prostate cancer cell line LNCaP, but not in the highly invasive human prostate cancer cell lines DU-145 and PC-3. Imunohistochemistry studies of human prostate cancer specimens revealed a down-regulation of prostasin in high-grade tumors. Using RT-PCR and western blot analyses, prostasin protein and mRNA expression were found in a non-invasive human breast cancer cell …

Contextual Relationship Model Across Four Cultures, Gary T. Horlacher Mar 2005

Contextual Relationship Model Across Four Cultures, Gary T. Horlacher

Theses and Dissertations

Research by a number of scholars working with different data has shown validity for a contextual model of relationships whereby a person's background characteristics affects or predicts her/his interpersonal style, which then affects or predicts her/his relationship satisfaction. This study tests if this relationship model is equivalent across four different cultural samples. This research also presents descriptive family data on a sample from Micronesia, a culture that has not previously been described in family science literature, compared to three other cultural groups. A total of 550 individuals from Micronesian (N=131), Hispanic-Americans (N=139), Non-LDS Caucasians (N=140), and LDS-Caucasians (N=140) filled out …

Nanotechnology: An Assessment Of Current Occupational Health And Safety Issues, Brian Mcshane Mar 2005

Nanotechnology: An Assessment Of Current Occupational Health And Safety Issues, Brian Mcshane

Theses

Nanotechnology is a rapidly expanding field and is expected to revolutionize many existing industries and create entirely new ones. Presently, and to a greater extent in the future, there is potential for occupational exposure to free forms of these materials in research and development labs and industrial processes. Free nanomaterials may pose a significant health risk to those exposed as described by recent preliminary data on nanomaterials but also through the work addressing exposures to ultrafine particles both in the workplace and in ambient air. There are presently no published health and safety guidelines for working with nanomaterials. This paper …

Theses and Dissertations

Effective leadership in the field of dietetics is becoming increasingly vital in a rapidly changing world. A determination of factors which impact leaders and their followers is essential. This study was designed to examine the relationship between religiosity and spirituality and transformational leadership characteristics of hospital food and nutrition managers as rated by self as well as by those directly supervised by the managers. The influence of religious and spiritual beliefs on the workplace and workplace practices was also examined. Respondents were selected from the American Hospital Association database. Hospitals from 250 to 499 beds were included. Directors of Foodservice …

A Causal Inference Approach For Constructing Transcriptional Regulatory Networks, Biao Xing, Mark J. Van Der Laan Mar 2005

A Causal Inference Approach For Constructing Transcriptional Regulatory Networks, Biao Xing, Mark J. Van Der Laan

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Transcriptional regulatory networks specify the interactions among regulatory genes and between regulatory genes and their target genes. Discovering transcriptional regulatory networks helps us to understand the underlying mechanism of complex cellular processes and responses. In this paper, we describe a causal inference approach for constructing transcriptional regulatory networks using gene expression data, promoter sequences and information on transcription factor binding sites. The method rst identies active transcription factors under each individual experiment using a feature selection approach similar to Bussemaker et al. (2001), Keles et al. (2002) and Conlon et al. (2003). Transcription factors are viewed as `treatments' and gene …

Healing Model Of Nursing Practice In Nursing Homes, Virginia C. Carlson Mar 2005

Healing Model Of Nursing Practice In Nursing Homes, Virginia C. Carlson

Theses and Graduate Projects

The project is a healing practice model designed to advocate for the certified nursing assistants and elders in nursing homes. The Healing Model of Nursing Practice in Nursing Homes was designed to reclaim the inherent "caring-healing" attributes of nursing that have been excluded from nursing and the health systems as posited by Watson's Theory of Human Caring. The model integrates Zen and Reiki into a non-invasive practice, which is a method of healing that has been promoted by nurse theorists Jean Watson and Martha Rogers. The model promotes wholeness. The goal is to move our actions beyond regulatory processes to …
