Mendelian Microsatellite Loci For The Caribbean Coral Acropora Palmata, Iliana B. Baums, Colin R. Hughes, Michael E. Hellberg Mar 2005

Mendelian Microsatellite Loci For The Caribbean Coral Acropora Palmata, Iliana B. Baums, Colin R. Hughes, Michael E. Hellberg

Faculty Publications

The genus Acropora constitutes the most species-rich clade of hermatypic corals, and its members are important reef builders throughout their broad tropical range. In the Caribbean, acroporid populations have declined over the last 2 decades due to disease, hurricanes, predation, and bleaching episodes, and some are now subjects of conservation efforts. Genetic estimates of population connectivity and clonal structure should be part of these efforts, but such studies have been hampered by low levels of mitochondrial DNA variation in corals, and an apparent dearth of variable single-copy nuclear markers. Developing microsatellite markers in Acropora has proven especially difficult. We used …

In-Line Particulate Transport And Dispersion Modeling Using The Regional Atmospheric Modeling System (Rams), John W. Englert Mar 2005

In-Line Particulate Transport And Dispersion Modeling Using The Regional Atmospheric Modeling System (Rams), John W. Englert

Theses and Dissertations

There are a number of analytical and semi-empirical models that describe the behavior of particulate matter in the atmosphere. Many of these require modification for all types of weather, dry versus wet deposition, and overall effects can be quite non-linear. Rainfall (rate, drop size, etc.), snowfall (rate, flake size, etc.), humidity, pressure, temperature, and combination of these greatly affect particle settling and washout rates. To that end, a method for tracking released constituents using the Regional Atmospheric Modeling System (RAMS) microphysics package is developed by modifying one of the hydrometeor categories (hail) in the microphysics package. The RAMS microphysics package …

Phylogenetic History, Morphological Parallelism, And Speciation In A Complex Of Appalachian Salamanders (Genus: Desmognathus), Nathan D. Jackson Mar 2005

Phylogenetic History, Morphological Parallelism, And Speciation In A Complex Of Appalachian Salamanders (Genus: Desmognathus), Nathan D. Jackson

Theses and Dissertations

Understanding the mechanisms that generate shared morphologies across closely related taxa is important when identifying distinct evolutionary lineages using morphological characters. Desmognathus salamanders are an ideal group for testing hypotheses concerning the correlation between morphological similarity and genetic exchange within and among nominal species due to a pattern of high discordance between the two. Phylogeographic hypotheses are tested for populations of the D. quadramaculatus species complex throughout southern Appalachia by combining phylogenetic and population genetic methods with geographical information. Phylogenetic and phylogeographic inferences are then assessed in conjunction with morphological characteristics that have traditionally diagnosed taxonomic entities to understand the …

Crystallization And Preliminary X-Ray Analysis Of Na-Asp-1, A Multi-Domain Pathogenesis-Related-1 Protein From The Human Hookworm Parasite Necator Americanus, Mehmet İnan, Oluwatoyin A. Crystallization And Preliminary X-Ray Analysis Of Na-Asp-1, A Multi-Domain Pathogenesis-Related-1 Protein From The Human Hookworm Parasite Necator Americanus, Mehmet İnan, Oluwatoyin A. Asojo, Alex Lucas, Rick Barent, Jicai Huang, Brad Plantz, Amber Swanson, Mark Gouthro, Michael M. Meagher, Peter J. Hotez

Papers in Biochemical Engineering

Human hookworm infection is a major cause of anemia and malnutrition in the developing world. In an effort to control hookworm infection, the Human Hookworm Vaccine Initiative has identified candidate vaccine antigens from the infective larval stage (L3) of the parasite, including a family of pathogenesis related- 1 (PR-1) proteins known as the ancylostoma-secreted proteins (ASPs). The functions of the ASPs are unknown. In addition, it is unclear why some ASPs have one while others have multiple PR-1 domains. There are no known structures of a multi-domain ASP and in an effort to remedy this situation, recombinant Na …

Protecting Protected Speech: First Amendment Taxonomy And The Food And Drug Administration's Regulation Of "Enduring Materials", Daniel J. Gilman Mar 2005

Protecting Protected Speech: First Amendment Taxonomy And The Food And Drug Administration's Regulation Of "Enduring Materials", Daniel J. Gilman

Faculty Scholarship

Numerous comments have called upon the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to exercise restraint in its treatment of the dissemination of “enduring materials” (e.g., textbooks, journal articles, etc.) that address off-label uses of drug or biological products. This article considers the constitutional protections that apply to enduring materials as examples of commercial speech, and questions whether such materials—even though distributed by manufacturers—might be viewed more properly as scientific speech. Four conclusions will be set forth: 1) enduring materials regarding off-label uses deserve at least as much protection as the Constitution affords commercial speech; 2) there are good reasons to think …

The Anchor, Volume 118.20: March 9, 2005, Hope College

The Anchor: 2005

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Testing Of Great Bay Oysters For Two Protozoan Pathogens, New Hampshire Fish And Game Department

PREP Reports & Publications

Two protozoan pathogens, Haplosporidium nelsoni (MSX) and Perkinsus marinus (Dermo) are known to be present in Great Bay oysters. With funds provided by the New Hampshire Estuaries Project (NHEP), the Marine Fisheries Division of New Hampshire Fish and Game Department, (NHF&G) has continued assessing the presence and intensity of both disease conditions in oysters from the major beds, some open for harvest, within the Great Bay estuarine system.

Disrupting Integrin Transmembrane Domain Heterodimerization Increases Ligand Binding Affinity, Not Valency Or Clustering, Bing Hao Luo, Christopher V. Carman, Junichi Takagi, Timothy A. Springer Mar 2005

Disrupting Integrin Transmembrane Domain Heterodimerization Increases Ligand Binding Affinity, Not Valency Or Clustering, Bing Hao Luo, Christopher V. Carman, Junichi Takagi, Timothy A. Springer

Faculty Publications

Residues important in the interaction between the 23-residue transmembrane (TM) domains of the integrin αIIb- and β3- subunits were identified by mutating each non-Leu residue to Leu. Leu substitutions of αIIb at G972, G976, and T981, and of β3 at 1693 and G708, increased ligand binding. Substitutions with other amino acids at αIIbG972 and β3G708 could also increase ligand binding. The results are consistent with and extend the helical interface between the integrin α- and β-subunit TM domains previously defined by cysteine scanning and disulfide bond formation. We differentiated between affinity- and valency-based modes of activation by TM domain mutations. …
