Mems: Mobile Environmental Management System, Keith Gardiner, A Rizzini, James Carswell, Michela Bertolotto

Conference papers

This paper describes a web-based and Mobile Environmental Management System (MEMS) prototype specifically tailored to perform context-aware queries and updating of spatial datasets. Spatially enabled computing can provide situation aware assistance to both web-based and mobile users by presenting the right information at the right time, place, and situation using context-associated knowledge. Contextassociated knowledge is assembled by combining knowledge gained about information accessed in the past with the activities planned by the user, together with other situation dependencies (e.g. location) of these activities. The MEMS datasets are provided by the Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) and the prototype …

The Carbon Emissions Market Bottoms Out In One South African Community, Rachel Moshman Apr 2005

The Carbon Emissions Market Bottoms Out In One South African Community, Rachel Moshman

PEEL Alumni Scholarship

Through Flexible Mechanisms in the Kyoto Protocol, countries and private companies are able to buy credits for carbon emissions reduced in other countries to compensate for the carbon emissions they are not reducing themselves. The Clean Development Mechanism (“CDM”) encourages developed countries and private companies to invest in emission reduction projects in developing countries in exchange for carbon credits that will be counted as a reduction in the funder’s overall carbon emissions output.

A Demonstration Project: Using Published Online And Computer Based Instructional Materials In Distance Learning, Blended Learning, And Web Enhanced Courses., Frank Annunziata, Larry Belle

RIT Digital Archives

Our original proposal included designing, developing and delivering one entirely new distance learning history course, 302 Modern Europe and revising and upgrading an existing distance learning history course, 301 Modern America. Building these two courses would have resulted in two comprehensive bibliographies of online instructional resources, one for use in European history courses and one for use in American history courses, whether taught in distance learning or campus formats. Our experience in building these two courses using online instructional resources and the bibliographies that resulted were, in turn, intended to be used in a series of workshops for College of …

A Taxonomic Study Of The Lichen Genera Canomaculina, Canoparmelia And Rimelia In The Great Smoky Mountain National Park, Erin Boente '05 Apr 2005

A Taxonomic Study Of The Lichen Genera Canomaculina, Canoparmelia And Rimelia In The Great Smoky Mountain National Park, Erin Boente '05

Honors Projects

The 1997 National Park Service checklist of lichen species in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP) included only two Rimelia species (R. reticulata and R. subisidiosa), two Canoparmelia species (C caroliniana and C crozalsiana) and one Canomaculina species (as Rimeliella subtinctorium). Previous field and laboratory work by Jonathan Dey, often with Illinois Wesleyan University undergraduate student assistants, pointed to the presence of additional species of Rimelia in the GSMNP. Thus, we examined all specimens of Rimelia, Canoparmelia and Canomaculina previously collected in the GSMNP and deposited in the lichen herbarium at Illinois Wesleyan University in order to update the …

Predicting Olympic Medal Counts: The Effects Of Economic Development On Olympic Performance, Xun Bian '05 Apr 2005

Predicting Olympic Medal Counts: The Effects Of Economic Development On Olympic Performance, Xun Bian '05

Honors Projects

This paper investigates the relationship between a country's Olympic performance and its overall economic condition, including population, economic resources, and political structures. A panel data set comprising the yearly data of 1996, 2000, and 2004 are estimated by using a fixed-effect Tobit regression model. Following previous studies on this topic, population size and economic resources are measured by using population and per capita GDP. One major focus of this research is the influence of political structure on national Olympic performance. Instead of using a socialist and non-socialist dummy variable like most previous studies, I used continuous variables, political freedom (PF) …

Predicting Olympic Medal Counts: The Effects Of Economic Development On Olympic Performance, Xun Bian '05

The Park Place Economist

The modern Olympics were conceived by their founder Pierre de Coubertin to be competition between individual athletes, not countries (IOC, 2000). The Olympic Spirit emphasizes participation rather than winning. In reality however, the success of a country’s athletes is held to be an important source of national prestige. By-country medal tables are widely published. A glance at Olympic history will immediately tell us that not all nations have an equal ability to win medals. In this past August, 199 countries participated in the Athens Olympics, and 124 countries did not win a single medal. On the other hand, the top …

Bench-To-Bedside Review: Rhabdomyolysis -- An Overview For Clinicians., Ana L Huerta-Alardín, Joseph Varon, Paul E Marik

Jefferson Hospital Staff Papers and Presentations

Rhabdomyolysis ranges from an asymptomatic illness with elevation in the creatine kinase level to a life-threatening condition associated with extreme elevations in creatine kinase, electrolyte imbalances, acute renal failure and disseminated intravascular coagulation. Muscular trauma is the most common cause of rhabdomyolysis. Less common causes include muscle enzyme deficiencies, electrolyte abnormalities, infectious causes, drugs, toxins and endocrinopathies. Weakness, myalgia and tea-colored urine are the main clinical manifestations. The most sensitive laboratory finding of muscle injury is an elevated plasma creatine kinase level. The management of patients with rhabdomyolysis includes early vigorous hydration.

Why Girls? The Importance Of Developing Gender-Specific Health Promotion Programs For Adolescent Girls, Amanda Birnbaum, Tracy R. Nichols Apr 2005

Why Girls? The Importance Of Developing Gender-Specific Health Promotion Programs For Adolescent Girls, Amanda Birnbaum, Tracy R. Nichols

Department of Public Health Scholarship and Creative Works

Adolescence is a time when many girls begin to develop unhealthy behaviors that can affect myriad short- and long-term health outcomes across their lifespan.2There is evidence that smoking, physical activity, and diet are habituated during adolescence, and some physiologic processes of adolescence, such as peak bone mass development, have direct effects on future health.3-4 Establishing healthy practices, beliefs and knowledge among adolescent girls will decrease morbidity and mortality among adult women and potentially affect the health of men and children through women’s role as healthcare agents. This paper provides a brief review of lifestyle health behaviors among women and girls …

Nebraska Catfish Anglers: Descriptions And Insights Derived From The 2002 Nebraska Licensed Angler Survey, Keith Hurley, Kristin Duppong-Hurley Apr 2005

Nebraska Catfish Anglers: Descriptions And Insights Derived From The 2002 Nebraska Licensed Angler Survey, Keith Hurley, Kristin Duppong-Hurley

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts

Analyses in this report will refer to number of different groups. Catfish seeking anglers are defined as any angler who has spend at least 1 trip during 2002 in pursuit of a catfish species (channel, blue, flathead, or bullhead). This is the most general group included in the analyses and is also the least avid group of anglers in regards to their relationship to catfish angling. Catfish anglers are defined as those respondents who identified a catfish species as the species they most prefer to target. Catfish anglers represent a smaller group of respondents with a higher avidity for catfish …

Seasonal Variability In Trace Metal Speciation And Vertical Redox Stratification Of Freshwater Lake And Marsh Sediments In The Kalamzoo River Watershed (Mi, Usa), Noah Tumusiime Ndenga

Masters Theses

This research was aimed at: 1) quantifying redox-sensitive parameters in order to study redox stratification of the upper freshwater sediments at Asylum Lake and Kleinstuck Marsh, 2) quantifying the speciation of metals (e.g., Pb, Mn, Fe, Cr, Cu, Zn, Co and Cd), particularly with respect to their association with Fe and Mn (hydr)oxide phases, and 3) assessing changes in redox stratification and metal speciation as a function of season in the sediments. Both the solid phase and sediment pore waters were collected to a depth of ~50cm. Pore waters were analyzed for redox-sensitive species and the sediment solid phase was …

Assessment Of Sediment And Nutrient Loadings In The Davis Creek Watershed, Southwestern Michigan Using The Swat Model, Peter Kibowen Kimosop

Masters Theses

The Davis Creek Watershed has been impaired for many years by nonpoint source pollution. A recent modeling research on the watershed simulated both nutrient and sediment movements for the single storm events. This study simulates the movement of sediments and nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus) in the watershed continuously using the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) for assessing water quality in the watershed. Multiple databases for climate, soil types, DEM, land use and agricultural management practices were used to derive inputs for the SWAT. Subsequently, the SWAT model was run for the period of 1998-2004. The simulated results show that …
