The marine bacterium Vibrio vulnificus is a human pathogen that can spontaneously switch between virulent opaque and avirulent translucent phenotypes. Here, we document an additional form, the rugose variant, which produces copious biofilms and which may contribute both to pathogenicity of V. vulnificus and to its survival under adverse environmental conditions. Commodity Money And The Valuation Of Trade, Eric Smith, Martin Shubik
Commodity Money And The Valuation Of Trade, Eric Smith, Martin Shubik
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
In a previous essay we modeled the enforcement of contract, and through it the provision of money and markets, as a production function within the society, the scale of which is optimized endogenously by labor allocation away from primary production of goods. Government and a central bank provided fiat money and enforced repayment of loans, giving fiat a predictable value in trade, and also rationalizing the allocation of labor to government service, in return for a fiat salary. Here, for comparison, we consider the same trade problem without government or fiat money, using instead a durable good (gold) as a …

Fiat Money And The Natural Scale Of Government, Martin Shubik, Eric Smith
Fiat Money And The Natural Scale Of Government, Martin Shubik, Eric Smith
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
The competitive market structure of a decentralized economy is converted into a self-policing system treating the bureaucracy and enforcement of the legal system endogenously. In particular we consider money systems as constructs to make agents’ economic strategies predictable from knowledge of their preferences and endowments, and thus to support coordinated resource production and distribution from independent decision making. Diverse rule systems can accomplish this, and we construct minimal strategic market games representing government-issued fiat money and ideal commodity money as two cases. We endogenize the provision of money and rules for its use as productive activities within the society, and …
What Is The Best Predictor Of Annual Lyme Disease Incidence: Weather, Mice, Or Acorns?, Eric M. Schauber, Richard S. Ostfeld, Andrew S. Evans Jr
What Is The Best Predictor Of Annual Lyme Disease Incidence: Weather, Mice, Or Acorns?, Eric M. Schauber, Richard S. Ostfeld, Andrew S. Evans Jr

Predicting fluctuations in annual risk of Lyme disease would be useful in focusing public health efforts. However, several competing hypotheses have been proposed that point to weather variables, acorn production, or mouse abundance as important predictors of Lyme disease risk. We compared the ability of acorn production, mouse density, and four relevant weather variables to predict annual Lyme disease incidence (detrended) between 1992 and 2002 for Dutchess County, New York, and seven states in the northeastern United States. Acorn production and mouse abundance measured in Dutchess County were the strongest predictors (r ≥ 0.78) of Dutchess County Lyme disease …

Differential Dna Binding And Protection By Dimeric And Dodecameric Forms Of The Ferritin Homolog Dps From Deinococcus Radiodurans, Anne Grove, Steven P. Wilkinson
Faculty Publications
Bacterial iron storage proteins such as ferritin serve as intracellular iron reserves. Members of the DNA protection during starvation (Dps) family of proteins are structurally related to ferritins, and their function is to protect the genome from iron-induced free radical damage. Some members of the Dps family bind DNA and are thought to do so only as fully assembled dodecamers. We present the cloning and characterization of a Dps homolog encoded by the radiation-resistant eubacterium Deinococcus radiodurans and show that DNA binding does not require its assembly into a dodecamer. D. radiodurans Dps-1, the product of gene DR2263, adopts a …

The movements of larvae between marine populations are difficult to follow directly and have been the subject of much controversy, especially in the Caribbean. The debate centres on the degree to which populations are demographically open, such that depleted populations can be replenished by recruitment from distant healthy populations, or demographically closed and thus in need of local management. Given the depressed state of many tropical reef populations, the understanding of these movements now bears critically on the number, placement, and size of marine reserves. Most genetic analyses assume that dispersal patterns have been stable for thousands of generations, thus …

Synthetic And Structural Studies Of Novel 1, 10-Phenanthroline Derivatives, Eunjoo Kim
Synthetic And Structural Studies Of Novel 1, 10-Phenanthroline Derivatives, Eunjoo Kim
Masters Theses
Asymmetric catalysis can provide a general approach to the preparation of enantiomerically enriched compounds in organic synthesis. Very often these asymmetric catalysts consist of a chiral ligand-metal complex. Because of the growing demand to develop enantioselective reactions in organic chemistry one focus of this area of research is the design and characterization of new chiral ligands for asymmetric synthesis.
The focus of my research is in the design, synthesis, and characterization of novel 1, 10-phenanthroline derivatives that could be used as chiral ligands in enantioselective reactions. Central to these studies have been the effect of substituents on the B-ring of …
Rhizopine Synthesis – Potential Mediators For Nitrogen Fixation In Legume Plants, Venkat Reddy Guduru
Rhizopine Synthesis – Potential Mediators For Nitrogen Fixation In Legume Plants, Venkat Reddy Guduru
Masters Theses
This research project focused on novel and efficient synthetic approaches of inosamine derivatives (rhizopines). The preparation of specific rhizopines would help elucidate the microbial pathway of rhizopine catabolism and degradation, and determine the role of corresponding genes during nitrogen fixation. We have investigated regio - and stereoselective transformations of myo-inositol derivative 28 utilizing an organostannane as key intermediate towards rhizopine 1a. The synthesis involved several protection and deprotection strategies to control competing reactivities of six hydroxyl groups of myo-inositol. Rhizopine 1a was prepared efficiently as a single isomer in 8 steps and 13% yield by controlling reactions …
Effect Of Antioxidants On Cadmium Induced Oxidative Stress And Signal Transduction, Deepti Goel
Effect Of Antioxidants On Cadmium Induced Oxidative Stress And Signal Transduction, Deepti Goel
Masters Theses
A study was done to establish if reactive oxygen species (ROS) participate in the signal transduction pathway through which cadmium induces gene transcription. Cadmium has become a concern in the health care community in the past few years as evidence suggests that cadmium can induce the development of tumors, influence cell signaling and cause damage to organs, tissue, cells and DNA. The mechanism by which cadmium exerts its action on cellular processes or induces toxicity is however unclear although there is evidence to suggest that ROS play a role. Our laboratory is interested in understanding the mechanisms of differentially regulated …
Black River Watershed Management Plan, Erin M. Fuller
Black River Watershed Management Plan, Erin M. Fuller
Masters Theses
The Black River Watershed encompassses 287 square miles in Allegan and Van Buren Counties in southwestern lower Michigan. The confluence of the North, Middle, and South branches is approximately 2.5 miles upstream of the City of South Haven, where the river empties into Lake Michigan. The Black River Watershed Management Plan was created with input from a variety of stakeholders, from local organizations to state agencies. Input from these stakeholders, field work, and previous water quality studies all helped determine water quality concerns in the Black River Watershed. Stakeholders input also was used to determine goals and objectives that would …

Law And The Emotions: The Problems Of Affective Forecasting, Jeremy A. Blumenthal
Law And The Emotions: The Problems Of Affective Forecasting, Jeremy A. Blumenthal
Indiana Law Journal
Legal scholarship on "behavioralism" and the implications of cognitive biases for the law is flourishing. In parallel with the rise of such commentary, legal scholars have begun to discuss the role of the emotions in legal discourse. This discussion often addresses the "appropriateness" of various emotions for the substantive law, or attempts to model the place of the emotions in the law. Implicit in some of these theories, however, and explicit in others, is the assumption that emotions are "predictable," "manageable, "and (for some commentators) under conscious control. This assumption is belied by psychological research on affective forecasting that demonstrates …

26Al-Containing Acidic And Basic Sodium Aluminum Phosphate Preparation And Use In Studies Of Oral Aluminum Bioavailability From Foods Utilizing 26Al As An Aluminum Tracer, Robert A. Yokel, Aaron A. Urbas, Robert A. Lodder, John P. Selegue, Rebecca L. Florence
Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications
We synthesized 26Al-containing acidic and basic (alkaline) sodium aluminum phosphates (SALPs) which are FDA-approved leavening and emulsifying agents, respectively, and used them to determine the oral bioavailability of aluminum incorporated in selected foods. We selected applicable methods from published syntheses (patents) and scaled them down (∼3000- and 850-fold) to prepare ∼300–400 mg of each SALP. The 26Al was incorporated at the beginning of the syntheses to maximize 26Al and 27Al equilibration and incorporate the 26Al in the naturally-occurring Al-containing chemical species of the products. Near infrared spectroscopy (NIR) and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) were used …
