Physical Mapping Of Genes In The Porcine Ovarian Transcriptome, A. R. Caetano, J. B. Edeal, K. Burns, R. K. Johnson, C. K. Tuggle, Daniel Pomp

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Reproductive efficiency and associated traits are of major economic importance to the swine industry and have been more difficult to improve genetically than other production traits. Integration of phenotypical data with gene mapping and expression studies provides a powerful approach for dissection of the genetic basis regulating complex traits. We developed a total of 101 polymerase chain reaction-based markers, representing 91 unique genes, for expressed sequence tags previously reported to be putatively differentially expressed in the porcine ovarian transcriptome of a swine line selected on an index of high ovulation rate and embryonic survival. These were subsequently used in physical …

North American Bird Strike Advisory System, Russell Defusco, Michel Hovan, James Harper, Kurt Heppard Apr 2005

North American Bird Strike Advisory System, Russell Defusco, Michel Hovan, James Harper, Kurt Heppard

Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 11th (2009)

The international aviation community recognizes the high human and economic costs associated with bird strikes. Hundreds of lives and millions of dollars have been lost in recent years because of this problem. Notably, aviation experts in North America recognize the importance and availability of potential solutions for this problem. Several models and systems such and the USAF’s Bird Avoidance Model (BAM) and the Avian Hazard Advisory System (AHAS) as well as the technological development of advanced radar and communications systems have made great progress in addressing the problem of bird strikes. However, many have argued that further and much greater …

Identification Of The Mass Transfer Mechanisms Involved In The Transport Of Human Immunoglobulin - G In N,N,N',N' -Ethylnediaminetetramenthylenephosphonic Acid Modified Zirconia, Sabyasachi Sarkar, Perer W. Carr, Anuradha Subramanian Apr 2005

Carr, Anuradha Subramanian

Papers in Biotechnology

Zirconia particles modified with N,N,N′,N′-ethylenediaminetetramethylenephosphonic acid (EDTPA), further referred to as r_PEZ, were studied as a support material for use in chromatography. Our previous studies have demonstrated the utility of r_PEZ in the separation of immunoglobulins from biological fluids. In the present study we sought to understand the underlying factors and identify the rate-limiting mechanisms that govern the transport of biomolecules in r_PEZ. Pulse injection techniques were used to elucidate the individual mass transfer parameters. Elution profiles obtained under retained and unretained conditions were approximated by the Gaussian equation and the corresponding HETP contributions were estimated. The dependence of …

Development Of A Novel Microreactor For Improved Chemical Reaction Conversion, Yu Liang Apr 2005

Development Of A Novel Microreactor For Improved Chemical Reaction Conversion, Yu Liang

Doctoral Dissertations

Microreactors have been widely studied over the past two decades for different chemical reactions, to develop new analytical capabilities, and to obtain high mixing performance in the reactors. The main objectives of this work are to investigate the effect of different microchannel structures on the fluid properties and mixing behavior in microreactors, and to design, fabricate, and test a novel microreactor for higher conversion in a chemical reaction. The development of this novel microreactor is intended to provide a valuable guideline in achieving enhanced chemical mixing and to make available a solid research base for optimization of the yield of …

Bofes E Sapinhas: Lesbian Life In Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, Ronny R. Kraft Apr 2005

Bofes E Sapinhas: Lesbian Life In Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, Ronny R. Kraft

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

For three weeks I studied lesbian women in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil through formal interview, informal interview and observation. I wanted to find out how lesbians interact with a machismo society that treats homosexuality as taboo and women as lesser. I discovered that lesbian women, in Salvador, mainly fall into two categories. The first category describes women that are masculine in nature and therefore are obviously homosexual to the public. The second category of lesbians is less distinguishable by their outward appearance and thus blends in with mainstream society. Through observation and interview I discovered that there is a higher amount …

The Α1 Chain Of Collagen Xi, Posttranslational Modifications, And The Pericellular Matrix, Katey Irwin Apr 2005

The Α1 Chain Of Collagen Xi, Posttranslational Modifications, And The Pericellular Matrix, Katey Irwin

McNair Scholars Research Journal

Collagen type XI is a quantitatively minor but developmentally essential component of the extracellular matrix and as a secreted protein is subject to a variety of posttranslational modifications. These modifications have been shown to influence the affinity of endogenous binding between collagen XI and various extracellular matrix components. The three dimensional structure of the amino terminal domain (Npp) of this molecule has been determined through homology modeling. As a result a putative heparan sulfate binding site has been predicted. Heparan sulfate is an abundant sugar found on the surface of most cells and on proteoglycan molecules of the pericellular matrix. …

Double-Stranded Rna-Dependent Protein Kinase (Pkr) Is Downregulated By Phorbol Ester, Yan Zhou, Barbara I. Chase, Mark Whitmore, Bryan R.G. Williams, Aimin Zhou

Chemistry Faculty Publications

The double-stranded RNA-dependent protein kinase (PKR) is one of the key mediators of interferon (IFN) action against certain viruses. PKR also plays an important role in signal transduction and immunomodulation. Understanding the regulation of PKR activity is important for the use of PKR as a tool to discover and develop novel therapeutics for viral infections, cancer and immune dysfunction. We found that phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA), a potent activator of protein kinase C (PKC), decreased the level of autophosphorylated PKR in a dose- and time-dependent manner in IFN-treated mouse fibroblast cells. Polyinosinic–polycytidylic acid (poly I:C) treatment enhanced the activity of …

Against Dictionaries: Using Analogical Reasoning To Achieve A More Restrained Textualism, Jason Weinstein Apr 2005

Against Dictionaries: Using Analogical Reasoning To Achieve A More Restrained Textualism, Jason Weinstein

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

This Note argues that new textualists should abandon dictionaries as a source for legal interpretation. Textualists believe in restricting judges to the intent discernible from the words of a statute and contend that legislative history is unacceptable as a source of this intention. Both of these sentiments lead textualists to dictionaries as the intuitively correct solution for ambiguities in a text. The author argues, however, that dictionaries by their very nature cannot help discern between reasonable definitions at the margins of meaning. The use of dictionaries in these situations allows for a sham formalism, unrestrictive in result and unrevealing of …

Cholera And Its Impact On Nineteenth-Centry Mormon Migration, Patricia Rushton Apr 2005

Cholera And Its Impact On Nineteenth-Centry Mormon Migration, Patricia Rushton

BYU Studies

Nineteenth-century migrants traveling across America suffered from many diseases as they journeyed to new homes in the West. The disease that was most common and caused the highest rate of illness and death was cholera. Historian Robert Carter notes, "It was a disease with which people were... familiar, yet it was little understood. It would strike suddenly, with no warning, often killing the victim within hours of the first symptoms. It was so uncontrollable that often entire families, even whole emigrating companies, would be wiped out." While cholera was not always fatal, it brought fear and suffering into the lives …

Confined Livestock Feeding Facilites: Control Of Stable Flies And Hosue Flies, Craig Anthony Apr 2005

Confined Livestock Feeding Facilites: Control Of Stable Flies And Hosue Flies, Craig Anthony

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Stable flies and house flies are major pests near confined livestock facilities, cattle feedlots, and dairies, and cost livestock producers millions of dollars annually, especially in the more human environment of eastern South Dakota. Losses result from decreased weight gains and production by cattle that suffer the attack of the stable fly. Economic losses due to the house fly are much more difficult to determine, but nevertheless they are a nuisance to livestock and people. A problem is emerging with these two flies, especially the house fly. As urban development gradually spreads into what were traditionally agriculture production areas, the …
