Improving And Extending Behavioral Animation Through Machine Learning, Jonathan J. Dinerstein Apr 2005

Improving And Extending Behavioral Animation Through Machine Learning, Jonathan J. Dinerstein

Theses and Dissertations

Behavioral animation has become popular for creating virtual characters that are autonomous agents and thus self-animating. This is useful for lessening the workload of human animators, populating virtual environments with interactive agents, etc. Unfortunately, current behavioral animation techniques suffer from three key problems: (1) deliberative behavioral models (i.e., cognitive models) are slow to execute; (2) interactive virtual characters cannot adapt online due to interaction with a human user; (3) programming of behavioral models is a difficult and time-intensive process. This dissertation presents a collection of papers that seek to overcome each of these problems. Specifically, these issues are alleviated …

The Neural Substrates Of Infant Sleep In Rats, Karl Æ. Karlsson, Andrew J. Gall, Ethan J. Mohns, Adele M. H. Seelke, Mark S. Blumberg Apr 2005

The Neural Substrates Of Infant Sleep In Rats, Karl Æ. Karlsson, Andrew J. Gall, Ethan J. Mohns, Adele M. H. Seelke, Mark S. Blumberg

Faculty Publications

Sleep is a poorly understood behavior that predominates during infancy but is studied almost exclusively in adults. One perceived impediment to investigations of sleep early in ontogeny is the absence of state-dependent neocortical activity. Nonetheless, in infant rats, sleep is reliably characterized by the presence of tonic (i.e., muscle atonia) and phasic (i.e., myoclonic twitching) components; the neural circuitry underlying these components, however, is unknown. Recently, we described a medullary inhibitory area (MIA) in week-old rats that is necessary but not sufficient for the normal expression of atonia. Here we report that the infant MIA receives projections from areas containing …

Bimetallic Pt-Ag And Pd-Ag Nanoparticles, Frank D. Blum, Akira Tokuhiro, Massimo F. Bertino, Carmen M. Doudna Apr 2005

Bimetallic Pt-Ag And Pd-Ag Nanoparticles, Frank D. Blum, Akira Tokuhiro, Massimo F. Bertino, Carmen M. Doudna

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

We report studies of bimetallic nanoparticles with 15%-16% atomic crystal parameters size mismatch. The degree of alloying was probed in a 2-nm Pt core (smallest attainable core size) of Pt-Ag nanoparticles (completely immiscible in bulk) and 20-nm-diameter Pd-Ag nanowires (completely miscible in bulk). Particles were synthesized radiolytically, and depending on the initial parameters, they assume spherical or cylindrical (nanowire) morphologies. In all cases, the metals are seen to follow their bulk alloying characteristics. Pt and Ag segregate in both spherical and wire forms, which indicates that strain due to crystallographic mismatch overcomes the excess surface free energy in the small …

Method For Producing A Three-Dimensional Macro-Molecular Structure, Rudiger Schlaf, Joern Kohlscheen, Chris Braunagel Apr 2005

Method For Producing A Three-Dimensional Macro-Molecular Structure, Rudiger Schlaf, Joern Kohlscheen, Chris Braunagel

USF Patents

A method produces a three-dimensional macro-molecular structure on a substrate in a vacuum. In this method, a solution of a solvent and a macro-molecular species is provided. The solution is ionized to provide ionized molecules of the solvent and molecules of the macro-molecular species. The ionized molecules of the solvent have a first electrical charge and the molecules of the macro-molecular species have a second electrical charge equivalent to the first electrical charge. As such, the ionized molecules of the solvent and the molecules of the macro-molecular species naturally repel each other. The molecules of the macro-molecular species are deposited …

Adoption Of Riparian Forest Buffers On Private Lands In Nebraska, Usa, Peter Skelton, Scott J. Josiah, James W. King, James R. Brandle, Glenn A. Helmers, Charles A. Francis Apr 2005

Adoption Of Riparian Forest Buffers On Private Lands In Nebraska, Usa, Peter Skelton, Scott J. Josiah, James W. King, James R. Brandle, Glenn A. Helmers, Charles A. Francis

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Faculty Publications

Pesticide and nutrient runoff from agricultural fields is a socio-environmental problem in the Midwestern United States. Riparian forest buffers (RFBs) are a proven conservation practice that effectively manage this problem, though adoption rates are low. A mail survey was conducted to determine differences between adopter and nonadopter characteristics and attitudes with regard to the use of RFBs. Data were collected from 48 RFB adopters and 261 RFB nonadopters in two Nebraska watersheds. Inferential and multivaririate statistics were used to identify differences between adapter status and producer status groups. About half (50.8%) the respondents were nonproducers. Nonproducers are agricultural landowners not …

Personalized Ranking Of Search Results With Implicitly Learned User Interest Hierarchies, Hyoung-Rae Kim, Philip K. Chan Apr 2005

Personalized Ranking Of Search Results With Implicitly Learned User Interest Hierarchies, Hyoung-Rae Kim, Philip K. Chan

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

Web search engines are usually designed to serve all users, without considering the interests of individual users. Personalized web search incorporates an individual user's interests when deciding relevant results to return. We propose to learn a user profile, called a user interest hierarchy (UIH), from web pages that are of interest to the user. The user's interest in web pages will be determined implicitly, without directly asking the user. Using the implicitly learned UIH, we study methods that rank the results from a search engine. Experimental results indicate that our personalized ranking methods, when used with a popular search engine, …

2004 Student Estuarine Research Project, Terri W. Grizzle

PREP Reports & Publications

This report describes the results of the second education and bird-monitoring program conducted by sixth grade students, teachers, and volunteers at Portsmouth Middle School. The program combined classroom lessons with field trips to monitor bird populations in South Mill Pond, a tidal pond-like estuary in front of the school. The Pond has suffered over the years from a variety of environmental problems as the City of Portsmouth developed, including major watershed changes, combined sewer overflows, runoff from city streets and parking lots, and fill projects. Several years ago, the City initiated a long-term project to re-direct sewage away from the …

Abstract

Normal flight periods and early/late records for resident species, subspecies and regular strays of butterflies of California are presented below.. Many subspecies or populations in the state are distinctive and may prove to merit species recognition by specialists in the future.
