Are Nutrients Assimilated By Juveniles Of The Brittle Star Amphipholis Squamata (Echinodermata: Ophiuroidea)?, Elizabeth A.G. Whitehill '05

Honors Projects

Over 50 species of brittle stars (Echinodennata: Ophiuroidea) are known to brood their developmental stages (embryos and larvae) through metamorphosis in internal structures called bursae (Hyman, 1955). In some of these brooding ophiuroids, the source of the organic material necessary to support the growth and development of the embryos is somewhat obscure because the amount of material required is not maternally supplied in the egg. A species that follows this example is Amphipholis squamata (Delle Chiaje). Previous studies (Fontaine and Chia 1968) have shown that the larvae of A. squamata are able to acquire the organic material needed to sustain …

Establising A High-Frequency Standard Reference Sequence Stratigraphy, Sea-Level Curve, And Biostratigraphy For Morrowan Strata Of The Lower Absaroka I Time Slice Based Upon The Bird Spring Formation, Arrow Canyon, Nevada, Kristen Phelps Briggs Apr 2005

Establising A High-Frequency Standard Reference Sequence Stratigraphy, Sea-Level Curve, And Biostratigraphy For Morrowan Strata Of The Lower Absaroka I Time Slice Based Upon The Bird Spring Formation, Arrow Canyon, Nevada, Kristen Phelps Briggs

Theses and Dissertations

For the same reasons which prompted its ratification in 1990 as the Global Stratotype Section and Point for the Mid-Carboniferous boundary, namely, section completeness, abundant fossils, and excellent exposure, the Morrowan Arrow Canyon Bird Spring strata is recommended as a candidate standard sequence stratigraphic reference for the Morrowan portion of the Lower Absaroka I supersequence. The stratigraphic architecture of Morrowan strata in Arrow Canyon was largely controlled by high-amplitude (100-m), high-frequency sea-level changes. Outcrop data and facies stacking patterns define 59 fifth-order fundamental cycles. These fundamental cycles stack into ten third-order sequences with an average duration of 320 ka. Changes …

Agricultural Systems For Saline Soil: The Potential Role Of Livestock, David G. Masters, H C. Norman, E G. Barrett-Lennard Apr 2005

Agricultural Systems For Saline Soil: The Potential Role Of Livestock, David G. Masters, H C. Norman, E G. Barrett-Lennard

Natural Resources Research Articles

Human-induced soil salinity is becoming a major threat to agriculture across the world. This salinisation occurs in both irrigated and rain-fed agricultural zones with the highest proportions in the arid and semi-arid environments. Livestock can play an important role in the management and rehabilitation of this land. There are a range of plants that grow in saline soils and these have been used as animal feed. In many situations, animal production has been poor as a result of low edible biomass production, low nutritive value, depressed appetite, or a reduction in efficiency of energy use. Feeding systems are proposed that …

Iron Oxide Nanoparticles For Sustained Delivery Of Anticancer Agents, Tapan K. Jain, Marco Morales Torres, Sanjeeb K. Sahoo, Diandra Leslie-Pelecky, Vinod Labhasetwar Apr 2005

Iron Oxide Nanoparticles For Sustained Delivery Of Anticancer Agents, Tapan K. Jain, Marco Morales Torres, Sanjeeb K. Sahoo, Diandra Leslie-Pelecky, Vinod Labhasetwar

Diandra Leslie-Pelecky Publications

We have developed a novel water-dispersible oleic acid (OA)-Pluronic-coated iron oxide magnetic nanoparticle formulation that can be loaded easily with high doses of water-insoluble anticancer agents. Drug partitions into the OA shell surrounding iron oxide nanoparticles, and the Pluronic that anchors at the OA-water interface confers aqueous dispersity to the formulation. Neither the formulation components nor the drug loading affected the magnetic properties of the core iron oxide nanoparticles. Sustained release of the incorporated drug is observed over 2 weeks under in vitro conditions. The nanoparticles further demonstrated sustained intracellular drug retention relative to drug in solution and a dose-dependent …

The Usability Study Of The Coates Library Website: Final Report, Benjamin R. Harris Apr 2005

The Usability Study Of The Coates Library Website: Final Report, Benjamin R. Harris

Library Faculty Research

Philosophies underlying web design principles and the usability of web architecture change over time. What worked 5 years ago may be irrelevant today, and design fads quickly come and go. Therefore, it is helpful to conduct research studies in the usability and design of web pages to determine how these resources continue to perform well and what areas require revision or would benefit from improvement. After a number of revisions and after two years in its current iteration, a usability study of the Coates Library website would give librarians and web team members the opportunity to evaluate the site. In …

Trefoil Factor 2 (Tff2) Deficiency In Murine Digestive Tract Influences The Immune System, M. Baus- Loncar, J. Schmid, El-Nasir Lalani, I. Rosewell, R. A. Goodlad, H. G.W. Stamp, N. Blin, T. Kayademir

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

Background & Aims:

The gastrointestinal trefoil factor family (TFF1, TFF2, TFF3) peptides are considered to play an important role in maintaining the integrity of the mucosa. The physiological role of TFF2 in the protection of the GI tract was investigated in TFF2 deficiency.

Methods:

TFF2-/- mice were generated and differential expression of various genes was assessed by using a mouse expression microarray, quantitative real time PCR, Northern blots or immunohistochemistry.

Results:

On an mRNA level we found 128 differentially expressed genes. We observed modulation of a number of crucial genes involved in innate and adaptive immunity in the TFF2-/- mice. …

Evaluation Of Glucocorticoid Sensitivity In 697 Pre-B Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia Cells After Overexpression Or Silencing Of Map Kinase Phosphotase-1, Marc T. Abrams, Noreen Robertson, Gerald Litwack, Eric Wickstrom

Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Faculty Papers

PURPOSE: To determine the effect of reducing MAP kinase phosphatase-1 (MKP-1) levels on cell death induced by glucocorticoid (GC) or hydroxyurea (HU) treatment in the human pre-B acute lymphoblastic leukemia cell line 697.

METHODS: Stable MKP-1 overexpressing transformants of the 697 pre-B ALL cell line were created and tested for sensitivity to the GC triamcinolone acetonide (TA) and HU, and compared to a control 697 cell line containing normal MKP-1 expression levels. Small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) were designed to inhibit MKP-1 expression and evaluated for their effect on GC-mediated cell death.

RESULTS: MKP-1 overexpression caused a phenotype of partial resistance …

Lincoln Assassinated!, Donald E. Wilkes Jr. Apr 2005

Lincoln Assassinated!, Donald E. Wilkes Jr.

Popular Media

The assassination of President Abraham Lincoln almost exactly 140 years ago–Lincoln was shot by John Wilkes Booth while watching the play “Our American Cousin” at Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C. around 10:15 p.m. on Friday, April 14, 1865, and died at 7:22 a.m. the following morning–was, in the words of historian Edward Steers, Jr., “a cataclysmic event in American history” which “gave rise to an ominous cloud that spread across the American landscape leaving its fallout on subsequent generations.” The prolongation of widespread virulent racism in this country, the calamitous failure of Reconstruction, the rise of the Jim Crow system, …
