Quadratic Regression Analysis For Gene Discovery And Pattern Recognition For Non-Cyclic Short Time-Course Microarray Experiments, Hua Liu, Sergey Tarima, Aaron S. Borders, Thomas V. Getchell, Marilyn L. Getchell, Arnold J. Stromberg Apr 2005

Quadratic Regression Analysis For Gene Discovery And Pattern Recognition For Non-Cyclic Short Time-Course Microarray Experiments, Hua Liu, Sergey Tarima, Aaron S. Borders, Thomas V. Getchell, Marilyn L. Getchell, Arnold J. Stromberg

Statistics Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Cluster analyses are used to analyze microarray time-course data for gene discovery and pattern recognition. However, in general, these methods do not take advantage of the fact that time is a continuous variable, and existing clustering methods often group biologically unrelated genes together.

RESULTS: We propose a quadratic regression method for identification of differentially expressed genes and classification of genes based on their temporal expression profiles for non-cyclic short time-course microarray data. This method treats time as a continuous variable, therefore preserves actual time information. We applied this method to a microarray time-course study of gene expression at short …

Understanding Work-Related Passion: Energizing The Workforce To Become More Productive & Satisfied, Michele Rosenbaum Apr 2005

Understanding Work-Related Passion: Energizing The Workforce To Become More Productive & Satisfied, Michele Rosenbaum

Education Masters

The purpose of this qualitative research study is to examine the topic of work-related passion. The first purpose of the study was to help individuals and organizations objectively define work-related passion. The second purpose was to discover examples and traits of work-related passion in the sample group of individuals and organizations. The third purpose was to better understand the relationship of work-related passion to heightened energy, performance and dedication at work. This qualitative study involved face-to-face 60-minute interviews with 17 executive level, middle management level, front-line employees, and retirees of for-profit and not-for-profit organizations, educational institutions and government agencies. The …

Eelgrass Distribution In The Great Bay Estuary 2003, Frederick T. Short

PREP Reports & Publications

In 2004, the NHEP funded annual monitoring for eelgrass in GBE. We collected aerial photography of eelgrass coverage for 2004 and mapped eelgrass distribution for 2003 from the information gathered the previous year. The present report presents the eelgrass distribution information for 2003.

A Benchmark And Analysis Of Spatial Data Structures For Physical Simulations, Domingo Lara Apr 2005

A Benchmark And Analysis Of Spatial Data Structures For Physical Simulations, Domingo Lara

Computer Science Honors Theses

Collision detection is an issue in physical simulations; without it simulations are inaccurate. Unfortunately, effective collision detection can require a significant amount of computational power. To reduce the number of computations and make the problem more tractable, computer scientists have used date structures to partition the system. This removes the need to have every single partical check for possible collisions with every other particle in the system; however, generic data structures typically do not work as well as specialized data structures, so this has led to the creation of multiple spatial data structures. Some spatial data structures and algorithms were …

Snowpack Control Over The Thermal Offset Of Air And Soil Temperatures In Eastern North Dakota, Andrew Grundstein, Paul E. Todhunter, Thomas Mote Apr 2005

Snowpack Control Over The Thermal Offset Of Air And Soil Temperatures In Eastern North Dakota, Andrew Grundstein, Paul E. Todhunter, Thomas Mote

Geography & Geographic Information Science Faculty Publications

[1] The close relationship between air and ground temperatures has been used to reconstruct paleoclimate conditions from ground temperatures. Unfortunately, the presence of snow decouples air and ground temperatures and obscures their relationship. The objective of this paper is to investigate the role that snowpack conditions play in affecting the relationship between air and soil temperatures. The annual thermal offset between mean annual soil and air temperatures is examined over a 12 year period (1990–2002) at Fargo, ND, using observed soil temperatures along with simulations from a physically based snowpack model. Early season snow cover does not necessarily lead to …

SoM Articles

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) circulates as quasispecies (QS), whose evolution is associated with pathogenesis. Previous studies have suggested that the use of thermostable polymerases without proofreading function may contribute to inaccurate assessment of HCV QS. In this report, we compared non-proofreading (Taq) with proofreading (Advantage High Fidelity-2; HF-2) polymerases in the sensitivity, robustness, and HCV QS diversity and complexity in the second envelope glycoprotein gene hypervariable region 1 (E2-HVR1) on baseline specimens from 20 patients in the HALT-C trial and in a small cohort of 12 HCV/HIV co-infected patients. QS diversity and complexity were quantified using heteroduplex mobility assays …

The Manganese-Stabilizing Protein Is Required For Photosystem Ii Assembly/Stability And Photoautotrophy In Higher Plants, Xiaoping Yi, Myriam Mcchargue, Susan Laborde, Laurie K. Frankel, Terry M. Bricker

Faculty Publications

Interfering RNA was used to suppress the expression of two genes that encode the manganese-stabilizing protein of photosystem II in Arabidopsis thaliana, MSP-1 (encoded by psbO-1, At5g66570), and MSP-2 (encoded by psbO-2, At3g50820). A phenotypic series of transgenic plants was recovered that expressed high, intermediate, and low amounts of these two manganese-stabilizing proteins. Chlorophyll fluorescence induction and decay analyses were performed. Decreasing amounts of expressed protein led to the progressive loss of variable fluorescence and a marked decrease in the fluorescence quantum yield (F v/Fm) in both the absence and the presence of dichloromethylurea. This result indicated that the amount …

Ecological Niching In An Interactive Simulation, Ryan T. Webb Apr 2005

Ecological Niching In An Interactive Simulation, Ryan T. Webb

Honors Theses

Our goal is to create a simulation platform for the study of ecological niching that can be extended to suit the needs of biological research. Ecological niching and the accompanying evolutionary process of speciation are difficult to observe in situ, which makes them prime candidates for study via the methods of computer simulation. To this end, we have created an interactive, real-time ecosystem simulation based on the standard predator/prey interaction model, in which interacting populations of organisms exhibit swarming behavior. We hope to provide the basic simulation components necessary to bring about niching and speciation, that may be extended for …
