Essential Kinase-Independent Role Of A Fer-Like Non-Receptor Tyrosine Kinase In Caenorhabditis Elegans Morphogenesis, Aaron P. Putzke
Essential Kinase-Independent Role Of A Fer-Like Non-Receptor Tyrosine Kinase In Caenorhabditis Elegans Morphogenesis, Aaron P. Putzke
Biology Faculty Scholarship
Morphogenesis requires coordination of cell surface activity and cytoskeletal architecture. During the initial stage of morphogenesis in Caenorhabditis elegans, the concerted movement of surface epithelial cells results in enclosure of the embryo by the epidermis. We report that Fer-related kinase-1 (FRK-1), an ortholog of the mammalian non-receptor tyrosine kinase Fer, is necessary for embryonic enclosure and morphogenesis in C. elegans. Expression of FRK-1 in epidermal cells is sufficient to rescue a chromosomal deficiency that removes the frk-1 locus, demonstrating its autonomous requirement in the epidermis. The essential function of FRK-1 is independent of its kinase domain, suggesting a …
Constructing Reality: Social Science And Race Cases, Beverly I. Moran
Constructing Reality: Social Science And Race Cases, Beverly I. Moran
Northern Illinois University Law Review
"Constructing Reality: Social Science and Race Cases" was the keynote address for the 2004 Northern Illinois University Law Review Symposium on the future of affirmative action after the Michigan affirmative action case known as Grutter v. Bollinger. The essay looks at the use of social science in the amicus briefs before the Supreme Court in that case. The author points out that social sciences were used in almost all the amicus briefs to either attack or defend affirmative action. This insight leads the author to argue that, because judges bring their understandings of the world into their decision making, lawyers …

Acute Physiological Responses And Psychological Perceptions Of Various Resistance Training Regimens, William J. Vincent
Student Work
The purpose of the current study was to examine the effects of four different resistance training protocols associated with periodization of resistance training on the biological signals that are associated with exercise regimens to increase muscle hypertrophy. A secondary purpose was to compare the ratings of perceived exertion (RPE) in the four weight training regimens. A total of eight male resistance trainers within the ages of 23-35 served as subjects for this study. On the first visit all had a baseline blood assay drawn to measure human growth hormone (hGH) and testosterone (T) and their 5 repetition maximum (RM) strength …

Macrofungi Of The Tennessee River Gorge, William D. Starrett
Macrofungi Of The Tennessee River Gorge, William D. Starrett
Honors Theses
Representative macro fungi of the Tennessee River Gorge were collected on the Tennessee River Gorge Trust (TRGT) property during 18 forays I conducted fom May to November 2004. This dramatically added to the baseline data on the macrofungi of the TRGT by adding 15 orders, 34 families, and 138 species to the existing list. These data were recorded in the herbarium of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga database. I converted the University's File Maker Pro fungi database into Microsoft Excel and Access, which allows it to be processed for introduction into the National Biological Information Infrastructure and onto the …
Special Classification Models For Lichens In The Pacific Northwest, Janeen Ardito
Special Classification Models For Lichens In The Pacific Northwest, Janeen Ardito
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
A common problem in ecological studies is that of determining where to look for rare species. This paper shows how statistical models, such as classification trees, may be used to assist in the design of probability-based surveys for rare species using information on more abundant species that are associated with the rare species. This model assisted approach to survey design involves first building models for the more abundant species. The models are then used to determine stratifications for the rare species that are associated with the more abundant species. The goal of this approach is to increase the number of …
Developing A Valid Screening Tool For Assessing Nutritional Adequacy And Osteoporosis Risk Among Vegans In The United States, Patricia Adelle Dyett
Developing A Valid Screening Tool For Assessing Nutritional Adequacy And Osteoporosis Risk Among Vegans In The United States, Patricia Adelle Dyett
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The vegetarian lifestyle in the United States has increased significantly over recent decades. With this growth trend, it has become necessary to assess the pros and cons of vegetarian diet patterns, particularly with respect to nutrition adequacy and chronic disease concerns.
The vegan diet engenders more concern than other common vegetarian lifestyles because it seeks to replace all nutrient-rich animal food products with only plant foods. Consequently, there are concerns of compromised protein, calcium. vitamin D, vitamin B12, n-3 fatty acid, zinc, and iron status. Moreover, because of typical vegan diet phenomena such as low BMI, low protein …

Parasitized And Non-Parasitized Prey Selectivity By An Insectivorous Bird, Gregory A. Jones, Kathryn E. Sieving, Michael L. Avery, Robert L. Meagher
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
The identification and conservation of naturally occurring enemies of crop pests is an important means of improving biological control in cropping systems. One particularly important potential mechanism whereby birds might stabilize and improve pest control is consumption of individual prey that escape mortality from other agents of biological control. We tested the hypothesis that birds prefer to forage upon non-parasitized fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda J. E. Smith) prey via captive feeding trials, where birds were also offered armyworms parasitized by Euplectrus plathypenae (Howard) larvae. While birds were equally willing to eat both parasitized and non-parasitized armyworm prey of the same …
Electromagnetic Nondestructive Inspection Of Aircraft Structures By Using A Magnetic Flux Leakage Method, Iyad Mahmood Ali Muslih
Electromagnetic Nondestructive Inspection Of Aircraft Structures By Using A Magnetic Flux Leakage Method, Iyad Mahmood Ali Muslih
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Aging of aircraft structures is mostly associated with fatigue cracking, de-bonding and corrosion. Detection and characterization of the structural defects at the initiation stages makes it a great challenge for any inspection technology. This study proposes a new solution for the nondestructive evaluation problem by using a magnetic flux method for non-ferromagnetic materials and provides a new neural network tool that predicts crack profiles in three dimensions by solving the inverse problem, where available neural networks can solve it in two dimensions only.;The discontinuity resulting from a crack produces disturbance to the distribution of electrical current density in the structure …

Distribution And Habitat Use Of The Crystal Darter ( Crystallaria Asprella) And Spotted Darter (Etheostoma Maculatum ) In The Elk River, West Virginia, Elizabeth A. Osier
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Crystal darters (Crystallaria asprella) and spotted darters (Etheostoma maculatum) have disjunct distributions within the Mississippi River drainage. In West Virginia, both species are restricted to a single drainage (the Elk River). Little information exists on the distribution and habitat use of crystal and spotted darters in the Elk River. I surveyed the Elk River between Sutton and Charleston, West Virginia, and documented distributions of crystal and spotted darters, as well as habitat use and habitat availability data. Two crystal darters were collected during 20 sampling occasions from 2002 to 2004. Spotted darters were documented at 9 sites; habitat use data …

A Dimensionless Invariant For Relative Size At Sex Change In Animals: Explanation And Implications, Andy Gardner, David Allsop, Eric Charnov, Stuart West
A Dimensionless Invariant For Relative Size At Sex Change In Animals: Explanation And Implications, Andy Gardner, David Allsop, Eric Charnov, Stuart West
Biology Faculty & Staff Publications
Recent comparative studies across sex-changing animals have found that the relative size and age at sex change are strikingly invariant. In particular, 91%-97% of the variation in size at sex change across species can be explained by the simple rule that individuals change sex when they reach 72% of their maximum body size. However, this degree of invariance is surprising and has proved controversial. In particular, it is not clear why this result should hold, given that there is considerable biological variation across species in factors that can influence the evolutionarily stable timing of sex change. Our overall aim here …

A New Military Framework For Nato, Hans Binnendijk, David C. Gompert, Richard L. Kugler
A New Military Framework For Nato, Hans Binnendijk, David C. Gompert, Richard L. Kugler
Defense Horizons
Although Americans and Europeans do not always agree on political strategies in the Middle East, they have a compelling reason to reach an accord on the need to strengthen North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) military forces for future operations in that region and elsewhere. If adequate military capabilities are lacking, the Alliance will not be able to act even when its political leaders agree on the need to do so. But if it creates such capabilities, it will be able to act either ad hoc or across the board if a common political strategy eventually were to emerge.

Communal Care Of Offspring In The White-Faced Capuchin Monkey (Cebus Capucinus), May 2005, Kristin A. Hook
Communal Care Of Offspring In The White-Faced Capuchin Monkey (Cebus Capucinus), May 2005, Kristin A. Hook
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
The purpose of this study was to document whether a communal infant care system existed in the whitefaced capuchin monkey, Cebus capucinus (Cebidae), in the Monteverde area. The intention was to draw comparisons in time allocation spent between infants and other individuals in the troops followed. In addition, approach and leave times in interactions involving the infant and other members of the troop as well as the sexes of those individuals involved were documented. It was found that a communal infant care system does in fact seem to exist for this species of primate. Infants spent the majority of their …
Protist Community Diversity In Relation To Resources In Bromeliads, May 2005, Jessica Spaulding
Protist Community Diversity In Relation To Resources In Bromeliads, May 2005, Jessica Spaulding
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Protists are microscopic organisms which play an important role in nutrient degradation in tank bromeliads (Carrias et al 2001). Their diverse communities provide good subjects of study on community assembly and their existence in bromeliads make them a unique, yet accessible case study. Resource based models suggest that an increase in resources leads to an increase in biodiversity. Since no two species can occupy the same niche, increased resources can lead to niche differentiation, promoting community diversity (Osborne 2000). This study hypothesized that as the amount of light, area, water, and food sources increase in a bromeliad community, the diversity …
Foliar Changes In Saurauia Montana Along An Altitudinal And Soil Fertility Gradient, May 2005, Miles T. Gray
Foliar Changes In Saurauia Montana Along An Altitudinal And Soil Fertility Gradient, May 2005, Miles T. Gray
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Despite high productivity, tropical forests are found on soils with low soil fertility. The creation of new biomass requires nutrients, so trees on these soils are more efficient at using and cycling nutrients. Tropical soils have been found to show soil fertility gradients in relation to annual precipitation, seasonality, age, and altitude. While tropical ecosystems and single temperate trees have been shown to respond to soil fertility gradients, similar studies of tropical trees are sparse. Here, I study a single species of tropical tree, Saurauia montana, from 1530 to 1785 m, to find changes in leaf toughness, specific leaf area, …
An Elevational Comparison Of Coleopteran Communities In A Riparian Forest In San Luis, Costa Rica, May 2005, Emily Sampson
An Elevational Comparison Of Coleopteran Communities In A Riparian Forest In San Luis, Costa Rica, May 2005, Emily Sampson
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
The purpose of this study was to determine whether altitude has a measurable effect on coleopteran community diversity. Data for this analysis were collected along the Rio San Luis in Monteverde, Costa Rica. It was found that the community at lower elevations (710-740 m) had significantly higher diversity (H’ = 2.45) than the community at higher elevations (1170-1220 m) (H’ = 2.01). This difference is most likely caused by changes in microhabitat but could also be a result of variation within community sampling.
Climate Change And Uredinales (Rust Fungi) On Pleurothallid Orchids In Monteverde, May 2005, Lindsey Parsons
Climate Change And Uredinales (Rust Fungi) On Pleurothallid Orchids In Monteverde, May 2005, Lindsey Parsons
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
The purpose of this experiment was to determine if the decrease in mist frequency observed in Monteverde, has an effect on Uredinales (rust fungi) infections in Pleurothallis aristata and Pleurothallis segoviensis orchids and to determine if the infection in P. segoviensis contributed to the rate of herbivory and number of flowers the orchid produced. In mist experiments infected samples of both species of orchids were placed in either a misted or control condition and the change in infection rates were observed over a 20-day period. Under natural conditions, number of leaves, leaves with infection, leaves with herbivory, and number of …
Traceability And Labeling Of Genetically Modified Crops, Food, And Feed In The European Union, Margaret Rosso Grossman
Traceability And Labeling Of Genetically Modified Crops, Food, And Feed In The European Union, Margaret Rosso Grossman
Journal of Food Law & Policy
In the last several years, European Union (E.U.) policy has encouraged development of biotechnology, including genetically modified (GM) (that is, bioengineered) agricultural crops. The E.U. developed a strategy for life sciences and biotechnology, directed toward improving the competitiveness of the European biotechnology sector and the general situation for European biotechnology. E.U. documents have acknowledged the potential significance of genetically modified crops-for example, the conclusion in a recent report that "the potential of plant genomics and biotechnology to deliver major advances in our lifestyles and prosperity is enormous. [Biotechnology] can also maintain and enhance the competitiveness of E.U. farmers and food …
Do European Union Non-Tariff Barriers Create Economic Nuisances In The United States?, Thomas P. Redick, Michael J. Adrian
Do European Union Non-Tariff Barriers Create Economic Nuisances In The United States?, Thomas P. Redick, Michael J. Adrian
Journal of Food Law & Policy
The European Union's new traceability system for biotech crops will lead to the proliferation of non-tariff barriers affecting biotech crops. This, in turn, will lead to economic dislocation and attendant liability in the United States, which is losing billions of dollars in export trade. A chain of complex legal problems will arise for United States-based companies as they strive to trace particular genetically modified (GM) events and avoid commingling. The European Union (E. U) tracing law for biotech crops applies at each stage of commodity commerce, from grain shippers leading back through elevators, growers, and seed companies. Warranty liability could …

Toxoplasma gondii is a highly successful protozoan parasite in the phylum Apicomplexa, which contains numerous animal and human pathogens. T.gondii is amenable to cellular, biochemical, molecular and genetic studies, making it a model for the biology of this important group of parasites. To facilitate forward genetic analysis, we have developed a high-resolution genetic linkage map for T.gondii . The genetic map was used to assemble the scaffolds from a 10X shotgun whole genome sequence, thus defining 14 chromosomes with markers spaced at ∼300 kb intervals across the genome. Fourteen chromosomes were identified comprising a total genetic size of ∼592 cM …

David Hume On Miracles, Kyle G. Sessions
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Albert Einstein once said, "There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is." A quick study of David Hume's Inquiry Concerning Human Understanding reveals that he believed strongly in the first way. Why is this? First of all, it is in his definition of miracle. Hume defines a miracle as a violation of the laws of nature. This is a problematic definition to begin with, as it appears to preclude the possibility of there ever being a miracle. If a miracle is something that violates …
The Composition And Comparison Of Essential Oils And Their Nutritional Benefits To Enhance And Decrease Risk For Chronic Disease, Heather Wollschleger
The Composition And Comparison Of Essential Oils And Their Nutritional Benefits To Enhance And Decrease Risk For Chronic Disease, Heather Wollschleger
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
This paper reviews the current status of our knowledge of essential oils and their nutritional contribution to our diet. The effects of dietary fats on our health differ markedly from the type and form of the fat. Special emphasis is placed on omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, and their dietary involvement. Specific oils increase our levels of vital vitamin E and the essential omega-3 and omega-6 fats humans need for mental and physical health. Chronic diseases remain a major cause of death and disability, and risk factors include diets high in saturated fatty acids and trans fatty acids. This risk …

My art Is built on a foundation of personal experiences: First, as a child In New York City and Puerto Rico, and second, as a man learning his craft in universities and workshops in Wisconsin, Illinois, Texas, and Mexico. I categorize this deductive process as the emergence of the personal "Me,” because most artists develop a visual language of signs and symbols that has been shaped by the artist’s family, education, and personal experiences. It is also a deductive process that has shaped the personal “Me” through an analysis of my movement away from pernicious generalities, characterized by living under …
