Collection, Isolation And Evaluation Of Nitrogen Fixing Bacteria In The Rio Grande Valley Of Texas, Thomas M. Eubanks

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Isolation from local soil samples with Phaseolus vulgaris (L.) produced 20 samples from which pure cultures were obtained. A commercial strain of Rhizobium #132 was obtained from Becker Underwood and included as a standard in the experiment. The results demonstrated that a variety of infective and effective of strains of Rhizobium nodulating Phaseolus vulgaris (L.) exist in the native soils of the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. A cluster of effective bacteria was identified and can serve as a basis for recommendations to inoculant industry in the Valley. An isolate collection has been established to serve as a source of …

An Examination Of The Minority Organ And Tissue Donor Crisis, Therisa Yvonne Callier May 2005

An Examination Of The Minority Organ And Tissue Donor Crisis, Therisa Yvonne Callier

Theses (Pre-2016)

The importance of organ and tissue donation in the minority community has been very slow in gaining acceptance. The communicative challenge in the minority community has been historically hampered by fear of such drastic medical procedures. Information regarding organ and tissue donation has only recently begun to emerge in minority communities. In these communities, the shortage of organs is incredibly critical. The ineffective communications of the life saving benefits of organ and tissue transplantation in the minority community can be attributed to many factors. This thesis examined three critical factors regarding the reasons why communication has not been successful in …

Using Geographic Information Systems To Examine Red Wolf Home Range And Habitat Use In The Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Harry Ford Mauney May 2005

Using Geographic Information Systems To Examine Red Wolf Home Range And Habitat Use In The Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Harry Ford Mauney

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

A Geographic Information System (GIS) analysis was conducted to determine home range and habitat use patterns of the reintroduced red wolf (Canis rufus) in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP). To facilitate this GIS analysis, the original telemetry data was first converted from obsolete file formats into a contemporary database. When spatial movement patterns of animals are analyzed with regard to habitat characteristics, habitat use patterns may be revealed. In order to ascertain gender-based home range and core area size differences, home range and core areas were determined for 16 of 31 red wolf data sets (9 male, 7 …

South Chattanooga And Chattanooga Creek Floodplain: A Case Study, Maya M. Belka May 2005

South Chattanooga And Chattanooga Creek Floodplain: A Case Study, Maya M. Belka

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

South Chattanooga, Tennessee, has been the object of numerous investigations due to its large minority population and industrial history. Utilizing the case study approach, the area was examined as both an environmental justice community and home to an active Superfund site. Through legal analysis, historical research, environmental sampling, and government agency assessment, patterns emerged. The patterns provided a means for comparison with other communities in similar situations. The comparisons allowed for the formulation of several recommendations. The community's proximity to the heavily polluted Chattanooga Creek was a key component of the South Chattanooga case study. Chattanooga Creek flows through the …

Conservation Of Castanea Dentata Genetic Resources Of The Southeastern United States, Mark Thomas Alexander May 2005

Conservation Of Castanea Dentata Genetic Resources Of The Southeastern United States, Mark Thomas Alexander

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The ongoing effort by the American Chestnut Foundation to breed and reintroduce a blight resistant, locally adapted variety of American chestnut (Castanea dentata) requires a broad genetic base. To ensure adequate genetic diversity, genetic resources must be collected from throughout the native range of the species. Finding and breeding surviving C. dentata stump sprouts is problematic due to the relatively short life span of blooming stems and their often remote forest habitat. To facilitate more efficient location of surviving trees in the southeastern U.S., we used a Geographic Information System (GIS) to overlay soil, topography, and satellite imagery for the …

An Evaluation Of Tennessee's Early Action Compacts To Achieve Compliance With New Ozone Standards: A Dynamic Analysis Of Reduction Strategies To Decrease Tropospheric Ozone Formation, Christopher W. Hayes

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

On June 19, 2002, the U.S Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) endorsed the Early Action Compact (EAC), a mechanism designed to aid potential nonattainment areas throughout the United States to comply with the new 8-hour National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) set for ground-level ozone. Under the Compact, local areas will have the flexibility to design and implement ozone reduction control measures specific to the area's needs. The EAC will also defer nonattainment designation from April 15, 2004 to a date no later than December 31 , 2007. A nonattainment designation carries with it negative repercussions that affect the local economy …

With Liberty And Development For All: Review Essay, David Moshman May 2005

With Liberty And Development For All: Review Essay, David Moshman

Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications

The relation of liberty to development occupies the eight authors and editors of these seven books and additional authors of chapters within two of them. Their backgrounds and perspectives are diverse, ranging across psychology, education, law, history, and economics; encompassing dozens of European, Asian, African, and American cultures; and applying divergent conceptions of children and development. Most argue in various ways and for various reasons that liberty fosters development. Some add that development, in turn, fosters liberty, in a relation so close that freedom and development cannot be sharply distinguished.

Research To Support And Enhance Feral Swine Removal Efforts, Richard M. Engeman, Bernice Constantin, Stephanie A. Schwiff, Henry T. Smith, John Woolard

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Swine adversely affect the environment in most places around the world where they have been introduced into the wild. In many of those places swine removal is key to protection of a variety of special habitats, wetlands in particular. We have pursued several avenues of research and technique development to enhance swine removal efforts, primarily in Florida. An easily-applied passive tracking index (PTI) with good statistical properties has been effective for monitoring swine distribution and relative abundance, thus aiding the location of control method applications and the evaluation of control results. A quadrat sampiing methodology used in conjunction with the …

Kaposi’S Sarcoma-Associated Herpesvirus/Human Herpesvirus 8 Replication And Transcription Activator Regulates Viral And Cellular Genes Via Interferon-Stimulated Response Elements, Jun Zhang, Jinzhang Wang, Charles Wood, Dongsheng Xu, Luwen Zhang May 2005

Kaposi’S Sarcoma-Associated Herpesvirus/Human Herpesvirus 8 Replication And Transcription Activator Regulates Viral And Cellular Genes Via Interferon-Stimulated Response Elements, Jun Zhang, Jinzhang Wang, Charles Wood, Dongsheng Xu, Luwen Zhang

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

Kaposi’s sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (also called human herpesvirus 8 [HHV-8]) replication and transcription activator (RTA) is apparently necessary and sufficient for the switch from viral latency to lytic replication. RTA may regulate open reading frame (ORF) K14 (viral OX-2 homologue) and ORF74 (viral G-protein-coupled receptor homologue) genes through an interferon-stimulated response element (ISRE)-like sequence (K14 ISRE) in the promoter region. RTA strongly activated a K14 ISRE-containing K14-ORF74 promoter reporter construct and a heterologous promoter reporter construct containing K14 ISRE. RTA could bind to K14 ISRE and other ISREs, activate promoter reporter constructs from interferon-simulated genes (ISGs), and selectively induce three endogenous …

Identification Of Cis-Acting Elements That Mediate The Replication And Maintenance Of Human Papillomavirus Type 16 Genomes In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Kitai Kim, Peter C. Angeletti, Elizabeth C. Hassebroek, Paul F. Lambert May 2005

Identification Of Cis-Acting Elements That Mediate The Replication And Maintenance Of Human Papillomavirus Type 16 Genomes In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Kitai Kim, Peter C. Angeletti, Elizabeth C. Hassebroek, Paul F. Lambert

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

Papillomaviruses contain small double-stranded DNA genomes that are maintained in persistently infected mammalian host epithelia as nuclear plasmids and rely upon the host replication machinery for replication. Papillomaviruses encode a DNA helicase, E1, which can specifically bind to the viral genome and support DNA synthesis. Under some conditions in mammalian cells, E1 is not required for viral DNA synthesis, leading to the hypothesis that papillomavirus DNA can be replicated solely by the host replication machinery. This machinery is highly conserved among eukaryotes. We and others found that papillomavirus DNA could replicate in a simple eukaryote, Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Specifically, papillomavirus …

Comparative Genomics Of Foot-And-Mouth Disease Virus, C. Carrillo, E. R. Tuhlman, Gustavo A. Delhon, Z. Lu, A. Carreno, A. Vagnozzi, G. F. Kutish, D. L. Rock

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

Here we present complete genome sequences, including a comparative analysis, of 103 isolates of foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) representing all seven serotypes and including the first complete sequences of the SAT1 and SAT3 genomes. The data reveal novel highly conserved genomic regions, indicating functional constraints for variability as well as novel viral genomic motifs with likely biological relevance. Previously undescribed invariant motifs were identified in the 5’ and 3’ untranslated regions (UTR), as was tolerance for insertions/deletions in the 5’ UTR. Fifty-eight percent of the amino acids encoded by FMDV isolates are invariant, suggesting that these residues are critical for …

Gene Delivery Through Cell Culture Substrate Adsorbed Dna Complexes, Zain Bengali, Angela K. Pannier, Tatiana Segura, Brian C. Anderson, Jae-Hyung Jang, Thomas D. Mustoe, Lonnie D Shea May 2005

Gene Delivery Through Cell Culture Substrate Adsorbed Dna Complexes, Zain Bengali, Angela K. Pannier, Tatiana Segura, Brian C. Anderson, Jae-Hyung Jang, Thomas D. Mustoe, Lonnie D Shea

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Efficient gene delivery is a fundamental goal of biotechnology and has numerous applications in both basic and applied science. Substrate-mediated delivery and reverse transfection enhance gene transfer by increasing the concentration of DNA in the cellular microenvironment through immobilizing a plasmid to a cell culture substrate prior to cell seeding. In this report, we examine gene delivery of plasmids that were complexed with cationic polymers (polyplexes) or lipids (lipoplexes) and subsequently immobilized to cell culture or biomaterial substrates by adsorption. Polyplexes and lipoplexes were adsorbed to either tissue culture polystyrene or serum-adsorbed tissue culture polystyrene. The quantity of DNA immobilized …

K-Means Clustering With Multiresolution Peak Detection, Guanshan Yu, Leen-Kiat Soh, Alan B. Bond May 2005

K-Means Clustering With Multiresolution Peak Detection, Guanshan Yu, Leen-Kiat Soh, Alan B. Bond

Avian Cognition Papers

Clustering is a practical data mining approach of pattern detection. Because of the sensitivity of initial conditions, k-means clustering often suffers from low clustering performance. We present a procedure to refine initial conditions of k-means clustering by analyzing density distributions of a data set before estimating the number of clusters k necessary for the data set, as well as the positions of the initial centroids of the clusters. We demonstrate that this approach indeed improves the accuracy and performance of k-means clustering measured by average intra to interclustering error ratio. This method is applied to the virtual ecology project to …

Views Of Teaching And Research In Economics And Other Disciplines, William Walstad, Sam Allgood May 2005

Views Of Teaching And Research In Economics And Other Disciplines, William Walstad, Sam Allgood

College of Business: Faculty Publications

Anecdotes are often quite suggestive. A graduate student in economics who was serving as a teaching assistant once reported that his major professor came into his office and told him that he was spending too much of his time helping his undergraduate students and not enough time on his research. Was the professor expressing a preference for time spent on teaching over research? Or was the professor suggesting to the student that the academic market rewards research more than teaching? Regardless, the underlying message that gets transferred from such an experience, as early as graduate education and perhaps throughout a …

Attention-Altering Signal Interactions In The Multimodal Courtship Display Of The Wolf Spider Schizocosa Uetzi, Eileen A. Hebets May 2005

Attention-Altering Signal Interactions In The Multimodal Courtship Display Of The Wolf Spider Schizocosa Uetzi, Eileen A. Hebets

Eileen Hebets Publications

Complex signals are common throughout the animal kingdom, consisting of one or more signals in one or more sensory modalities presented within a single display. I tested an efficacy-based backup hypothesis of complex signal function using the bimodal courtship signaling wolf spider Schizocosa uetzi. This hypothesis predicts that the visual and vibratory courtship displays function as backups to each other in the presence of environmental variability. I compared mating frequencies across four environmental treatments in which the visual and vibratory environments were manipulated independently in a 2 × 2 design with visual treatments of light/dark (i.e., visual signal present/absent) …

Prasher (42) cloned a cDNA for the green fluorescent protein (GFP) gene from the jellyfish Aequorea victoria in 1992. Shortly thereafter, to the amazement of many investigators, this gene or derivatives thereof were successfully expressed and conferred fluorescence to bacteria and Caenorhabditis elegans cells in culture (10, 31), followed by yeast (24, 39), mammals (40), Drosophila (66), Dictyostelium (23, 30), plants (28, 49), and filamentous fungi (54). The tremendous success of GFP as a reporter can be attributed to unique qualities of this 238- amino-acid, 27-kDa protein which absorbs light at maxima of 395 and 475 nm and emits light …

Deposition Of Inhaled Particles In A Symptomatic Asthmatic Human Respiratory Tract, John N. Diflorio May 2005

Deposition Of Inhaled Particles In A Symptomatic Asthmatic Human Respiratory Tract, John N. Diflorio

Theses

Inhalation medicinal aerosol and biological aerosol risk assessment are the current motivation for deposition models to be developed. Inhalation aerosols have been around for many years for the treatment of asthma and other respiratory ailments in which the aerosols targeted the upper airways. Current research is focused to target the alveolar sacs due to their vast surface area for drug and gene delivery. Targeting the alveolar sacs Corkery (2000) requires a slow and deep breathing pattern for maximum deposition at the alveolar units. Also the particles must be fairly small (1-3 µm) to avoid deposition by impaction. Gautam et al. …
