Faculty Publications

Alu repeats contribute to genomic instability in primates via insertional and recombinational mutagenesis. Here, we report an analysis of Alu element-induced genomic instability through a novel mechanism termed retrotransposition-mediated deletion, and assess its impact on the integrity of primate genomes. For human and chimpanzee genomes, we find evidence of 33 retrotransposition-mediated deletion events that have eliminated approximately 9000 nucleotides of genomic DNA. Our data suggest that, during the course of primate evolution, Alu retrotransposition may have contributed to over 3000 deletion events, eliminating approximately 900 kb of DNA in the process. Potential mechanisms for the creation of Alu retrotransposition-mediated deletions …

Analyzing The Effects Of Various Sign Types Used By The Bureau Of Land Management For Desert Cleanup And Restoration Projects, Christopher Linehan

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

What is the effectiveness of attempts to curb illegal dumping with prompts on signs posted in the area? Do positive friendly language prompts such as “Restoration in Progress Please Do Not Disturb” generate more positive attitudes and intentions towards illegal dumping problems, than less friendly prompts such as “No Dumping Allowed”?

Results, although inconclusive, did however show a slight trend towards the negative language signs.

Total Suspended Solids In Las Vegas Wash, Mika Koponen

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Erosion along the Las Vegas Wash (Wash) has increased steadily along with the rapidly increasing population. The focus of this study is to find out if there is a relationship between lower total suspended solids rate (TSS) and the construction of erosion control structures along the Wash. The study was conducted between 7/15/2003 and 11/29/2004.

The method was water sampling on 7 sites and the samples were analyzed at Southern Nevada Water Systems (SNWS) laboratory at Saddle Island in Boulder City. Additional water quality data was also collected using Quanta, a device measuring different parameters in water. In this study …

Integrated Recombinant Protein Expression And Purification Platform Based On Ralstonia Eutropha, Gavin C. Barnard, Jesse D. Mccool, David W. Wood, Tillman U. Gerngross

Dartmouth Scholarship

Protein purification of recombinant proteins constitutes a significant cost of biomanufacturing and various efforts have been directed at developing more efficient purification methods. We describe a protein purification scheme wherein Ralstonia eutropha is used to produce its own “affinity matrix,” thereby eliminating the need for external chromatographic purification steps. This approach is based on the specific interaction of phasin proteins with granules of the intracellular polymer poly

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Regular nanosized structures are considered to be promising materials for magnetic information storage media with high density of information. Recently attention was paid to static and dynamic magnetic properties arising from dimensional confinement in such nanostructures. Here we present an investigation of permalloy antidot arrays of different thicknesses. Thin permalloyfilms of thickness ranging from were deposited on nanoporous membranes with a pore size of . It was found that additional ferromagnetic resonance peaks appear for film thicknesses below , while films with larger thicknesses show resonanceproperties similar to continuous films. A comparison between the filmsdeposited onto Si wafers and porous …

General Existence Principles For Nonlocal Boundary Value Problems With Ø-Laplacian And Their Applications, Ravi P. Agarwal, Donal O'Regan, Svatoslav Staněk

Mathematics and System Engineering Faculty Publications

The paper presents general existence principles which can be used for a large class of nonlocal boundary value problems of the form (ø(x′)) ′ = f1(t,x,x′) + f2(t,x,x′)F 1X + f3(t,x,x′)f2x,α(x) = 0, β(x) = 0, where fj satisfy local Carathéodory conditions on some [0,T] × Dj ⊂ ℝ, fj are either regular or have singularities in their phase variables (j = 1,2,3), f i, : C1[0.T] → C0[0,T] (i = 1,2), and α,β : C1[0.T] → ℝ are continuous. The proofs are based on the Leray-Schauder degree theory and use regularization and sequential techniques. Applications of general existence principles …

Cooperative Effects In Two-Dimensional Ring-Like Networks Of Three-Center Hydrogen Bonding Interactions, Ruben D. Parra, Satya S. Bulusu, Xiao Cheng Zeng May 2005

Cooperative Effects In Two-Dimensional Ring-Like Networks Of Three-Center Hydrogen Bonding Interactions, Ruben D. Parra, Satya S. Bulusu, Xiao Cheng Zeng

Xiao Cheng Zeng Publications

Cooperative effects in two-dimensional cyclic networks containing intermolecular three-centered hydrogen bonding interactions of the type H1&#;A&#;H2 are investigated by means of ab intio molecular orbital and density functional theory calculations. Ring-like clusters consisting of three and up to nine monomers of the cis–cis isomer of carbonic acid H2CO3 are used as basic models, where each unit acts simultaneously as a double hydrogen-bond donor and double hydrogen-bond acceptor. Cooperative effects based on binding energies are evident for (H2CO3)n, where n goes from 2 to 9. Thus, the ZPVE-corrected dissociation …

Evolutionary Explanations In Medical And Health Profession Courses: Are You Answering Your Students' "Why" Questions?, Eugene E. Harris, Avelin A. Malyango

Publications and Research

Background Medical and pre-professional health students ask questions about human health that can be answered in two ways, by giving proximate and evolutionary explanations. Proximate explanations, most common in textbooks and classes, describe the immediate scientifically known biological mechanisms of anatomical characteristics or physiological processes. These explanations are necessary but insufficient. They can be complemented with evolutionary explanations that describe the evolutionary processes and principles that have resulted in human biology we study today. The main goal of the science of Darwinian Medicine is to investigate human disease, disorders, and medical complications from an evolutionary perspective. Discussion This paper contrasts …
