Iontophoretic Trans-Dermal Drug Delivery Through Sweat Glands, Vardan Ter-Antonyan May 2005

Iontophoretic Trans-Dermal Drug Delivery Through Sweat Glands, Vardan Ter-Antonyan

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Although an iontophoretic trans-dermal drug delivery is known as an effective means for drug transportation through the human skin, it is not widely used because of the various side effects that come to life due to a high applied voltage of up to 80V. This study introduces an alternative means of drug transportation through the skin by means of sweat gland activation and reduction of an applied voltage to ensure that the iontophoresis is safe. The skin conductance studies performed on the pulmar area using 50mM of NaCl showed that the activation of sweat glands led to the increase of …

Évaluation De L'Exposition Humaine Aux Organophosphorés Et Des Risques Associés À L'Aide De Biomarqueurs Urinaires, Gaétan Carrier, Robert C. Brunet, Michèle Bouchard, Nathalie H. Gosselin, Marie-Josée Dumoulin, Yvette Bonvalot May 2005

Small Molecule And Polymer Effects On Bio-Mimetic Sensors, Ignacio J. Garcia, Nicole Branan, Todd A. Wells May 2005

Small Molecule And Polymer Effects On Bio-Mimetic Sensors, Ignacio J. Garcia, Nicole Branan, Todd A. Wells

Utah Space Grant Consortium

Formation of biomimetic membranes for the purpose of producing a protein based infrared biosensor has proven to be a difficult obstacle. Several methods have been employed and reproducibility is becoming more frequent. The use of polystyrene as an adhesion layer between the biomimetic and diamond surfaces is the most reliable form of reproducibility yet encountered. Unique properties of acetylcholine esterase based biosensors include infrared absorption bands that are not present in either the organo-phosphorous compounds or polystyrene used in this study. This information lends further weight for the practical use of infrared-ATR biosensor for the use of detecting organo-phosphorous nerve …

Red Bat (Lasiurus Borealis) Habitat Use In Actively Managed Forested Landscapes Of The Virginia Piedmont, Kathryn A. Durkee May 2005

Red Bat (Lasiurus Borealis) Habitat Use In Actively Managed Forested Landscapes Of The Virginia Piedmont, Kathryn A. Durkee

Theses & Honors Papers

Bat habitat in the southeastern U.S. is being threatened by rapid deforestation and degradation, yet conservation and management strategies are limited by the paucity of accurate bat demographic and habitat-use data. I conducted summer mist-net surveys to determine species richness, relative abundance, reproductive condition, and sex ratios of the bat species occurring in the Appomattox-Buckingham State Forest in the Piedmont physiographic region of central Virginia. I captured 8 species: red bat (Lasiurus borealis), eastern pipistrelle (Pipistrellus subflavus) , little brown myotis (Myotis lucifugus) , northern myotis (M septentrionalis ), big brown bat (Eptesicusfascus), evening bat (Nycticeius humeralis), hoary bat (L. …

Glbtq Characterization In Young Adult Novels, 1998-2004, Debra I. Lecates May 2005

Glbtq Characterization In Young Adult Novels, 1998-2004, Debra I. Lecates

Theses and Dissertations

Since the first young adult (YA) novel with gay content appeared in 1969, the number of gay-themed novels available for teens has increased significantly. However, research has shown that the long-awaited movement away from stereotyped characters and conservative storylines and into more realistic portrayals has been slow in materializing. This study utilized a content analysis of 22 YA novels with homosexual content to investigate whether changes have occurred in the portrayal of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (GLBTQ) characters and themes between earlier studies and 1998-2004. A total of 26 characterization and plot elements in each novel were analyzed …

The Molecular Characterization Of A Predicted Glycosyltransferase From Lycopersicon Esculentum, Alberto G. Distefano May 2005

The Molecular Characterization Of A Predicted Glycosyltransferase From Lycopersicon Esculentum, Alberto G. Distefano

Honors Scholar Theses

The synthesis of the plant cell wall is very complex, and understanding how this process occurs will lead to many benefits for future research and industries dependent upon cell walls for their products. The recent discovery of the functions of AtMUR3 and AtGT18 in Arabidopsis thaliana as xyloglucan galactosyltransferases has led to the identification of many more putative glycosyltransferases in the Arabidopsis genome. Due to the structural differences between the xyloglucans of Arabidopsis and solanaceous plants, we decided to search for putative arabinosyltransferases in the Solanaceae. Solanaceous xyloglucan is substituted by one to two arabinosyl residues at the second xylose …

International Female Film Directors: Their Contributions To The Film Industry And Women's Roles In Society, Rebecca Panosky May 2005

International Female Film Directors: Their Contributions To The Film Industry And Women's Roles In Society, Rebecca Panosky

Honors Scholar Theses

An in-depth analysis of five female film directors from four different countries: France, Germany, Italy, and the United States. Critical readings are provided of their films, discussing how each of these women support, challenge, or defy gender stereotypes, and how they represent women in society. Analysis is offered of how their films and female characters are significant to women's work in the film industry, and how their messages on gender identity and gender stereotypes challenged the societies in which they lived, or live.

The Relationship Between Sexism, Feminism, And Attitudes Toward Premarital Sex, Larisa Rodgers May 2005

The Relationship Between Sexism, Feminism, And Attitudes Toward Premarital Sex, Larisa Rodgers

Honors Scholar Theses

This paper examines the relationship between gender, sexism, attitudes toward feminism, and the sexual double standard. Students at a university (138 female and 58 male) participated in a survey study, which included six items measuring a sexual double standard, the Neosexism scale, the Ambivalent Sexism Inventory, and the Attitudes toward Feminism scale. Results show a double standard that is endorsed more by male participants than by female participants. Correlations were found between attitudes endorsing the sexual double standard and high levels of sexism, as well as negative attitudes toward feminism.
