Seafloor Characterization Through The Application Of Avo Analysis To Multibeam Sonar Data, Luciano E. Fonseca, Larry A. Mayer, Barbara J. Kraft Sep 2005

Seafloor Characterization Through The Application Of Avo Analysis To Multibeam Sonar Data, Luciano E. Fonseca, Larry A. Mayer, Barbara J. Kraft

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

In the seismic reflection method, it is well known that seismic amplitude varies with the offset between the seismic source and detector and that this variation is a key to the direct determination of lithology and pore fluid content of subsurface strata. Based on this fundamental property, amplitude-versus-offset (AVO) analysis has been used successfully in the oil industry for the exploration and characterization of subsurface reservoirs. Multibeam sonars acquire acoustic backscatter over a wide range of incidence angles and the variation of the backscatter with the angle of incidence is an intrinsic property of the seafloor. Building on this analogy, …

Uvsd: Software For Detection Of Color Underwater Features, Yuri Rzhanov, Anton Mamaenko, M Yoklavich

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

Underwater Video Spot Detector (UVSD) is a software package designed to analyze underwater video for continuous spatial measurements (path traveled, distance to the bottom, roughness of the surface etc.) Laser beams of known geometry are often used in underwater imagery to estimate the distance to the bottom. This estimation is based on the manual detection of laser spots which is labor intensive and time consuming so usually only a few frames can be processed this way. This allows for spatial measurements on single frames (distance to the bottom, size of objects on the sea-bottom), but not for the whole video …

Von Neumann And Computers, Steve Humble Sep 2005

Von Neumann And Computers, Steve Humble

The Mathematics Enthusiast

The title of this paper should not be Von Neumann and computers, but Von Neumann and the Von Neumann machine. Von Neumann may be famous for many things but humility was not one of them. Yet no one had anything bad to say about 'good time' Johnny Von Neumann; he just was too likeable. He gave massive parties and loved women, fast cars, jokes, noise, Mexican food, fine wine, and, most of all, mathematics. 'Unbelievable', said one of Von Neumann's old friends, 'He knew how to have a good time. His parties were once if not twice a week at …

Termite (Isoptera) Diversity In Senegal And Their Damage On Reforestation Areas And Cultures, Makhfousse Sarr, Nguya K. Maniania, A. Russell-Smith, Abdoulaye Niassy

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Studies conducted from 1969 to 2000 on termite ecology and biology in Senegal revealed high termite diversity and an influence of climate and soil conditions on termite group distribution. Sixty-four termite species were recorded. Some were specific to ecologically similar zones while others were widely distributed. Some species, known to inhabit wet zones, were found in semi-arid zones where relic forest vegetation still exists. Nioro, in the central part of the country, seems to be the buffer zone between species to the north and south of Senegal. In Ferlo, an arid zone, Macrotermes species was in regression and the subsisting …

Molecular Subtyping And Antibiotic Resistance Analysis Of Salmonella Species, Aparna Tatavarthy Sep 2005

Molecular Subtyping And Antibiotic Resistance Analysis Of Salmonella Species, Aparna Tatavarthy

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The genus Salmonella, comprised of 2400 serotypes, is one of the leading causes of foodborne illnesses in the US and has been used for the deliberate contamination of food. A rapid system for detection, isolation, typing and antibiotic susceptibility profiling is essential for diagnosis and source tracking in natural outbreaks or a bioterrorism event. Pure culture is essential for molecular typing and antibiotic resistance testing. The virulence and the resistance mechanisms of Salmonella are rapidly evolving and many are still unexplained. The first aim of the study was to rapidly detect and isolate Salmonella from intentionally contaminated food. The …

Final Report: Evaluation Of The Morphoedaphic Index And Sediment Diatoms For Inference Of Pre-European Settlement Total Phosphorus Concentration In Epa Region 10 Lakes, Rich Miller, Aaron Hook, Richard Petersen, Mark D. Sytsma

Center for Lakes and Reservoirs Publications and Presentations

Water quality in many Northwest lakes has declined over the past century due, in part, to increased anthropogenic nutrient loading (Edmonson and Lehman, 1981). Under the Clean Water Act, resource managers such as the Washington Department of Ecology, Oregon Department of Environmental Quality, and tribes are responsible for restoring and protecting the integrity of these waters. Targets for restoration or criteria for impairment are not well defined, however, and may naturally vary by geology, hydrology, morphometry, and climate.

One way to determine whether lakes are impaired and to identify restoration targets is to assess lake reference conditions (EPA 2000). Reference …

Identification And Characterization Of A Selective Inhibitor Of The Pim-1 Kinase, Sheldon Levon Holder Sep 2005

Identification And Characterization Of A Selective Inhibitor Of The Pim-1 Kinase, Sheldon Levon Holder

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The PIM-1 kinase is a serine/threonine kinase that has been implicated in the development of many human cancers, including leukemias, lymphomas, and prostate cancer. We have endeavored to identify and characterize a selective inhibitor of the PIM- 1 kinase. Such an inhibitor would have utility as a laboratory tool for the study of PIM-1 kinase function and as a template for the design of molecular therapeutics for diseases in which PIM-1 kinase activity is dysregulated.

Using phage display techniques we identified the peptide, HGVKKRPHNPYG, as a probable pseudosubstrate of the PIM-1 kinase with inhibitory activity in the low micromolar range …

Interaction Of Carbon Nanotubes With Sugar Complexes, Alan Casey, Gordon Farrell, Mary Mcnamara, Hugh Byrne, Gordon Chambers Sep 2005

Interaction Of Carbon Nanotubes With Sugar Complexes, Alan Casey, Gordon Farrell, Mary Mcnamara, Hugh Byrne, Gordon Chambers

Articles

The interaction of carbon nanotubes with soft organic molecules such as cyclodextrins and other saccarides has recently been shown to produce water soluble composites. Such systems offer considerable advantages over polymer based composites due to their biocompatibility and noncovalent coupling which can potentially preserve the unique properties of the tubes. The mechanism of interaction for such systems has been proposed to be dominated by hydrophobic and hydrophilic interactions along the surface of the tube. However efforts to characterise and rationalise such noncovalent interactions between the sugar-based materials and the carbon nanotubes have been slow to emerge. In this study a …

Differences In Pah Tolerance Between Capitella Species: Underlying Biochemical Mechanisms, Lis Bach, Annemette Palmqvist, Lene Juel Rasmussen, Valery E. Forbes

Valery Forbes Publications

The polychaete Capitella capitata consists of a species complex within which differences in tolerance to toxicants have been observed. For example, it has been shown that Capitella sp. S is more sensitive (e.g., in terms of survival, growth and reproduction) to PAH and other stressors than the more opportunistic Capitella sp. I, which is able to take up and biotransform the PAH fluoranthene (Flu). In the present study, an investigation was performed to examine whether differences in tolerance between Capitella species sp. I and sp. S are due to differences in biotransformation, measured as the amount of Flu-metabolites produced by …

Integrating The Diverse Definitions Of Happiness: A Time-Sequential Framework Of Subjective Well-Being, Chu Kim-Prieto, Ed Diener, Maya Tamir, Christie N. Scollon, Marrisa Diener

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

The field of subjective well-being (SWB) is primarily concerned with people's evaluation of their lives; however, it includes a wide range of concepts, from momentary moods to global life satisfaction judgments. We propose a framework that integrates these diverse constructs. Our sequential temporal framework of subjective well-being describes experiences of well-being from the events and circumstances that cause evaluative reactions, through the emotional reactions to these events, to recall of these reactions, and finally to global judgments of well-being based on the previous stages. The hypothesized processes that translate the various steps in the sequence into one another are described, …

Development Of Micro-Scale And Automated Membrane Extraction Systems For Water Analysis, Xiaoyan Wang Aug 2005

Development Of Micro-Scale And Automated Membrane Extraction Systems For Water Analysis, Xiaoyan Wang

Dissertations

Monitoring of trace level contaminants in water involves the extraction and enrichment of analytes. Over the years several techniques have been developed for this purpose. Currently there is an urgent need for the development of micro-scale extraction techniques that can lead to simple, fast trace analysis. Automated instruments that can be used for continuous, on-line analysis are also important. Membrane extraction can address both these needs, because it can be carried out in a continuous fashion and can also be miniaturized. This research addresses these two aspects of membrane extraction for the next generation of sample preparation.

Micro-Scale Membrane Extraction: …

Effect Of Heavy Metals On Salt March Biota, Kallaya Suntornvongsagul Aug 2005

Effect Of Heavy Metals On Salt March Biota, Kallaya Suntornvongsagul

Dissertations

Environmental restoration of disturbed, degraded and potentially contaminated wetland sites aims for the persistent and sustainable re-establishment of biological communities and important wetland functions. An ecologically informed restoration strategy presupposes some understanding of these system processes, but also of potential impacts on contaminants in the environment for risk assessment, long-term management, and potential cost-effective mitigative measures. In this study, potential effects of moderate heavy metal contamination in sediments of the urban salt marsh Harrier Meadow, NJ, were evaluated on growth performance of the common salt marsh plant S. patens and associated arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) colonizing its roots. Growth performance …

Rna Structure Analysis : Algorithms And Applications, Jianghui Liu Aug 2005

Rna Structure Analysis : Algorithms And Applications, Jianghui Liu

Dissertations

In this doctoral thesis, efficient algorithms for aligning RNA secondary structures and mining unknown RNA motifs are presented. As the major contribution, a structure alignment algorithm, which combines both primary and secondary structure information, can find the optimal alignment between two given structures where one of them could be either a pattern structure of a known motif or a real query structure and the other be a subject structure.

Motivated by widely used algorithms for RNA folding, the proposed algorithm decomposes an RNA secondary structure into a set of atomic structural components that can be further organized in a tree …

Electronic Capture And Analysis Of Fraudulent Behavioral Patterns : An Application To Identity Fraud, Benjamin Ngugi Aug 2005

Electronic Capture And Analysis Of Fraudulent Behavioral Patterns : An Application To Identity Fraud, Benjamin Ngugi

Dissertations

The objective of this research was to find a transparent and secure solution for mitigating identity fraud and to find the critical factors that determine the solution's acceptance. Identity fraud is identified as a key problem with total losses exceeding fifty two billion dollars (Javelin Strategy and Research 2005). A common denominator in most identity-fraud-prone transactions is the use of a keypad; hence this research focuses on keypad data entry and proposes a biometric solution. Three studies develop, evaluate and investigate the feasibility of this solution.

The first study was done in three stages. Stage one investigated the technical feasibility …

Ncbi Blastn Stage 1 In Reconfigurable Hardware, Kwame Gyang Aug 2005

Ncbi Blastn Stage 1 In Reconfigurable Hardware, Kwame Gyang

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Recent advances in DNA sequencing have resulted in several terabytes of DNA sequences. These sequences themselves are not informative. Biologists usually perform comparative analysis of DNA queries against these large terabyte databases for the purpose of developing hypotheses pertaining to function and relation. This is typically done using software on a general multiprocessor. However, these data sets far exceed the capabilities of the modern processor and performing sequence similarity analysis is increasingly becoming less efficient. There is an urgent need for more efficient ways of querying large DNA sequences for sequence similarities. Here, we describe an FPGA-based hardware solution that …

A Hierarchical Family Of Three-Dimensional Potential Energy Surfaces For He-Co, Kirk A. Peterson, George C. Mcbane Aug 2005

A Hierarchical Family Of Three-Dimensional Potential Energy Surfaces For He-Co, Kirk A. Peterson, George C. Mcbane

Peer Reviewed Articles

A hierarchical family of five three-dimensional potential energy surfaces has been developed for the benchmark He-CO system. Four surfaces were obtained at the coupled cluster singles and doubles level of theory with a perturbational estimate of triple excitations, CCSD(T), and range in quality from the doubly augmented double-zeta basis set to the complete basis set (CBS) limit. The fifth corresponds to an approximate CCSDT/CBS surface (CCSD with iterative triples/CBS, denoted CBS+corr). The CBS limit results were obtained by pointwise basis set extrapolations of the individual counterpoise-corrected interaction energies. For each surface, over 1000 interaction energies were accurately interpolated using a …

Haptic Induced Motor Learning And The Extension Of Its Benefits To Stroke Patients, Adrienne M. Coppa Aug 2005

Haptic Induced Motor Learning And The Extension Of Its Benefits To Stroke Patients, Adrienne M. Coppa

Theses

In this research, the Haptic Master robotic arm and virtual environments are used to induce motor learning in subjects with no known musculoskeletal or neurological disorders. It is found in this research that both perception and performance of the subject are increased through the haptic and visual feedback delivered through the Haptic Master. These system benefits may be extended to enhance therapies for patients with loss of motor skills due to neurological disease or brain injury.

Force and visual feedback were manipulated within virtual environment scenarios to facilitate learning. In one force feedback condition, the subject is required to maneuver …
