Gender Differences In The Self-Efficacy Of African Americans With Type Ii Diabetes: A Secondary Analysis Of A Chronic Disease Self-Management Program, Haley Erica Shead

African Americans with type II diabetes must possess the self-efficacy to manage and cope with the chronic illness in order to prevent further decline in physical and psychosocial health. This secondary analysis of data examined gender differences in self-efficacy with the theoretical frameworks of Lazarus (1993), Bandura (1971), and Bandura and Bussey (1999). There were no significant differences found between the mean scores on the Self-Efficacy for Managing Chronic Disease 6-Item Scale (Lorig, 1999) for the subgroups of males and females. Other variables such as years diagnosed with diabetes, family members with diabetes, and HbA1c levels were not related …

Bipolar disorder is now recognized as a severe psychiatric disorder characterized by extreme mood swings and cognitive deficits, most notably in the domains of verbal learning, executive function, and sustained attention. Neurocognitive deficits have been proposed as vulnerability markers or endophenotypes for the development of bipolar disorder. However, few research studies have examined whether neurocognitive deficits also exist in individuals at risk for bipolar disorder or first-degree relatives. This study examined neurocognitive function in individuals with bipolar disorder, their first-degree relatives, and a normal control group. Three studies are presented that apply the principles and methodologies of phylogeography to two anuran species (a frog and a toad) that inhabit the Mojave Desert of North America. The first study evaluates the geographic distributions of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) lineages (clades) within the broadly distributed toad, Bufo punctatus, as these relate to vicariant events hypothesized to have structured desert biotas within North America. Phylogeographic analyses support three clades with distributions corresponding to the Peninsular Desert of Baja, California, Chihuahuan Desert - Colorado Plateau (Eastern), and Mojave - Sonoran deserts (Western). Global climate change is a significant issue facing modern society. Potential changes include increased atmospheric CO2 concentrations, increased temperature, altered precipitation patterns, and increased nitrogen deposition. The Nevada Desert FACE (Free Air Carbon dioxide Enrichment) Facility (NDFF) examines the effects of increased atmospheric CO2 concentration in an arid ecosystem. The effects of elevated CO2 on plants include increased growth rates and stress tolerance. This study examined the mechanistic changes in drought tolerance of two dominant Mojave Desert shrubs ( Larrea tridentata and Ambrosia dumosa) grown in elevated (550 mumol mol-1) or ambient (380 mumol mol -1) CO2 concentrations. This thesis is focused on developing an optical oxygen sensor, to detect oxygen content in sealed packages. The oxygen sensor material was developed using tris(4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline)ruthenium(II) dichloride, a well known oxygen sensitive dye. The [Ru(Ph2Phen)3](Cl) 2 dye was incorporated into a polyacrylate polymer in the first step. A plasticizer (dioctylphthalate) was then added to the polymer/ruthenium mixture to improve the oxygen permeability of the sensor material. Optimum composition films were identified by the analysis of fluorescence lifetime decay curves using the OxySense 101 Analyzer. Methyl jasmonate (MJ) and cis jasmone (CJ), lipid-derived plant stress hormones, were studied for their effects against both hormone dependent (LNCaP) and hormone independent (PC3) human prostate cancer cell lines. Both 2 mM MJ or CJ inhibited the growth of the cell lines. An alamar blue assay was used to determine IC50 values for MJ and CJ in both cell lines at 24 hrs, 48 hrs and 72 hrs. At 24 hrs the MJ IC50 values were 2.25 and 2.05 while the CJ values were 3.00 and 1.25 in the PC3 and LNCaP lines respectively. Cell cycle analysis revealed that …

The literature investigating adolescent substance abuse has identified both social skills deficits and parental conflict as variables which both predict and maintain substance abuse. Supported by these findings, the present study evaluates the efficacy of utilizing cognitive problem solving skills training with adolescent substance abusers and their primary care giver (Youth-Parent Cognitive Problem Solving Training - YPCPS). This paper is concerned with the Bayesian approach to estimate the mean when encountered with left-censored data sets. Considering the joint non-informative prior, we derived the posterior probability density function of the mean of left-censored data. However, this density function is not recognizable and we can not analytically integrate it to obtain the normalizing constant. In other words, we can not compute analytically the posterior pdf or posterior moments. In this study three different kind of solar thermochemical cycles (methane reforming process, sulfur-iodine cycle and copper-chlorine cycle) have been analyzed to produce hydrogen gas. Methane reforming processes (steam methane reforming, partial oxidation and autothermal reforming) have been analyzed and simulation flowsheets have been developed. In this analysis, the temperature of all the reforming reactors are varied in the range of 500-1000 °C due to the transient nature of the solar energy. The Fort Mojave Indians of California and Mohave Indians of Arizona were once united on their aboriginal territory. Their lifestyle was impacted by interaction with the Spanish, fur trappers, military explorers and emigrant parties; Spanish interaction with the Mojave in the 1600s resulted in little change. The fur trappers of the 1820s generally lacked cultural awareness and respect of Mojave resources. Military expeditions along the 35th parallel into Mojave territory were generally well received and aided by some Mojave, while other Mojave were cautious of the "foreign invaders." As currently envisioned, over 70,000 tons of high-level nuclear waste would be stored inside the planned Yucca Mountain repository. After emplacement, the site must be maintained and guarded for over 10,000 years; The reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel is a possible alternative to geological storage. Here, depleted Uranium would be separated from Plutonium and Minor Actinides. While Plutonium can be 'burned' in commercial nuclear reactors, the minor actinides would be transmuted into other elements. Firstly, an open-loop and optimal feedback control system is designed to control a biorobotic AUV in the dive pLane Next, an inverse control system for dive-plane control is derived based on a discrete-time AUV model. This study was performed to examine the effects of varied types of external compression on surface and intramuscular temperature. Fourteen university students volunteered for this study; each subject received all 3 treatment conditions: ice compressed with an elastic wrap, ice compressed with Flex-i-Wrap(TM), and ice with no compression. Subjects were asked to lie prone on a standard treatment table during the 30-minute ice application and the 60-minute post-application durations. Surface and intramuscular temperatures were recorded every 30 seconds throughout the experiment. Polyaniline (PANI) is an organic semiconductor, which has attracted great attention in fundamental science and industries over the past decade due to its conductivity and electrochemical properties. The studies show that the three different synthetic methods produce PANI/Pt composites with different chemical compositions and electronic properties. The differences results from the overall oxidation state of the polymer and the interaction of nitrogen with the metallic Pt particles. The method of preparation influences the electrocatalytic oxidation of methanol and formic acid. Cancer magister inhabits areas frequently subject to periods of hypoxia. In hypoxia, digestive processes pose an additional physiological burden to crabs already attempting to maintain adequate oxygen uptake. Crabs tended to cease feeding below 3.2 kPa, resuming feeding when dissolved oxygen levels were rapidly raised to 6 kPa. In a 10.5-21 kPa DO gradient starved and fed crabs showed no preference for any area of the apparatus. In a 2.5-10.5 kPa DO gradient, starved and fed crabs showed significant preference for the highest oxygen concentration. This qualitative study examines the unique mediational affordances a drama based approach to second language learning provides. From the perspective of Sociocultural theory, the nature of learning is greatly determined by the mediational means employed and this study revealed the importance of modeling and imitation and multiple perspective taking that arose from the recursive process of rehearsal to be instrumental in the students' understanding and growing mastery of English. This study presents new data on the sedimentology of the northern Yangtze Platform, the delta13C stratigraphy of South China and Nevada, and the decline and virtual extinction of archaeocyaths. Paleoecological, sedimentological, and chemostratigraphic data were collected from multiple localities that span from the mid-Early Cambrian of Nevada (Poleta Formation) and China (Xiannudong Formation) to the late-Early Cambrian of Nevada (Harkless Formation) and China (Tianheban Formation); Facies represented in the Xiannudong Formation describe a Bahamas-type platform for the Yangtze Platform with a static and negative delta 13C record. Little academic literature exists about these programs and their diversity makes clear comparisons of culinary programs difficult.
