Technological developments have enabled mass spectrometry (MS) to evolve asone of the most versatile, sensitive and widely used analytical methods. Key areas ofresearch in biological MS include the development of analyte-selective MSmethodologies, along with the design of MS compatible separation technology. Analytesof interest range from small, biologically active molecules in disease progressionresearch, to macromolecules such as proteins, in proteomics investigations. Plant embryogenesis is an intriguing developmental process that is controlled by many genes. AGAMOUS Like 15 (AGL15) is a MADS-domain transcriptional regulator that accumulates preferentially during this stage. However, at the onset of this work it was unknown which genes are regulated by AGL15 or how AGL15 is regulated. This dissertation is part of the ongoing effort to understand the biological roles of AGL15. To decipher how AGL15 functions during plant development, a chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) approach was adapted to obtain DNA fragments that are directly bound by AGL15 in vivo. Mercury (Hg) is a pollutant affecting aquatic environments and human health world wide. Sediments in urban streams can store Hg from historical industrial waste releases in channel and floodplain deposits. Subsequent erosion of these deposits can remobilize sediment-bound Hg impacting downstream receiving waters. This study describes the distribution of Hg in floodplain and channel sediments of Wilson Creek and its tributaries using geochemical sediment analysis and cesium-137 dating. The upper Wilson Creek watershed drains the southern two-thirds of Springfield, Missouri. Results indicate that Hg concentrations in overbank and active channel sediments along the entire stream length are elevated above the …

In the past, intellectual property issues were considered complex, obscure, and highly technical; they were only of interest and concern to intellectual property attorneys, legal scholars, technology developers, and rightsholders. Thanks to the Internet and new communications technologies, however, intellectual property has now begun to play a more significant role in society.

Mapping, Habitat Characterization, And Fish Surveys Of The Deep-Water Oculina Coral Reef Marine Protected Area: A Review Of Historical And Current Research., John K. Reed, Andrew N. Shepard, Christopher C. Koenig, Kathryn M. Scanlon, R. G. Gilmore

Deep-water Oculina coral reefs, which are similar in structure and development to deep-water Lophelia reefs, stretch 167 km (90 nm) at depths of 60-100 m along the eastern Florida shelf of the United States. These consist of numerous pinnacles and ridges, 3-35 m in height, that are capped with thickets of living and dead coral, Oculina varicosa. Extensive areas of dead Oculina rubble are due in part to human impacts (e.g., fish and shrimp trawling, scallop dredging, anchoring, bottom longlines, and depth charges) but also may be due in part to natural processes such as bioerosion, disease, or global warming.

Deep-Water Reefs Off The Southeastern U.S.: Recent Discoveries And Research., John K. Reed, S. W. Ross

Some of the most spectacular corals found off the southeastern U.S. were discovered as recently as the 1970s in an unexpected place—the deep waters along the edge of the continental shelf. These banks of Oculina corals extend for 167 km along the eastern Florida shelf. Unfortunately, even as they were being discovered by scientists, the Oculina banks had already been damaged by trawl-fishing activity. Parts of the reef have been protected since 1984, and the protected area was expanded in 2000, but the story of the Oculina banks’ discovery and their damage by fishing activity is all too typical of …

An examination of the linguistic background and literary conceptions of anger in Old English. The first point of analysis will be the vocabulary of used to discuss anger and its manifestations in Old English prose didactic texts, particularly homilies and translations from Latin materials. Subsequent chapters will discuss anger as a literary phenomenon, first with respect to its use in the Old English hagiographic poem The Passion of St. Juliana and then Beowulf. The purpose of this paper was to explore and define the concept of home through an extensive review of the literature. The concept analysis framework of Walker and Avant (1995) was used to structure the paper and the theories of Johnson (1980) and Maslow (1954) were used for operationalization. The literature search examined characteristics of home applicable to all individuals. The concept’s defining attributes were discovered and applied to the home experiences of those living with serious and persistent mental illness. Homes were evaluated to assess for attribute presence and to determine if the homes were model, borderline, or contrary. …
