The Literacy Experiences Of Ninth-Graders And Their Teacher In An English Language Arts Workshop, Elizabeth Scanlon Jan 2005

The Literacy Experiences Of Ninth-Graders And Their Teacher In An English Language Arts Workshop, Elizabeth Scanlon

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The question guiding this qualitative study was: What are the literacy experiences of ninth-grade students in an English language arts workshop classroom? This study is an autoethnography and it chronicles six months in my ninth grade English classroom where I played the role of observant participant. It examines the process of reading and writing and how my perspective as a reader and a writer shapes my curricular decisions and influences my students as readers and writers.

A Probe Into Learning Approaches And Attitudes Towards Technology-Enhanced Language Learning (Tell) In Chinese Instruction, Rong Yuan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This quantitative research, carried out at the military environment at the Defense Language Institute investigated whether learning approaches could predict learners' language proficiency and learners' attitude towards technology-enhanced language learning (TELL). In addition, it also examined whether learners' demographic factors, such as age, educational backgrounds, prior experience in foreign language learning and in TELL as well as their ability to use PC and the World Wide Web could predict the above mentioned language proficiency and attitude. A cluster sampling method was adopted and data was collected in four Chinese departments at the institute. Both the learning approaches inventory ASSIST and …

Critical Race Feminism Empirical Research Project: Sexual Harassment & (And) The Internal Complaints Black Box, A Defining The Voices Of Critical Race Feminism, Tanya K. Hernandez

Faculty Scholarship

In this Article, I present a Critial Race Feminism (CRF) empirical sexual harassment project I recently conducted as a case study of how empirical research can be valuable to the future of CRF. Part I introduces the sexual harassment study and discusses the empirical questions it sought to explore. Part II then presents the empirical research design and the general trends that the data provided. Part III analyzes the key findings of the study and how it contributes to an understanding of how the application of sexual harassment law implicates race. The statistical analysis of survey responses from a group …

On Collaboration, Organizations, And Conciliation In The General Theory Of Contract, Ethan J. Leib Jan 2005

On Collaboration, Organizations, And Conciliation In The General Theory Of Contract, Ethan J. Leib

Faculty Scholarship

Daniel Markovits's Contract and Collaboration is a thought-provoking and ground-breaking inquiry into the ethics of contract. It argues that the philosophical foundation of contract may be found in what Markovits calls the collaborative view: a principle of forming respectful communities of collaboration where contractors treat each other as ends in themselves and refrain from treating each other as mere instrumentalities. Markovits acknowledges that there are three prototypical forms of contracts: (1) person-to-person; (2) person-to-organization; and (3) organization-to-organization. He is refreshingly honest in arguing that his theory of contract only addresses Type (1) contracts. I wish to argue here that this …

Alice In Wonderland Meets The U.S. Patent System, Jay Dratler Jan 2005

Alice In Wonderland Meets The U.S. Patent System, Jay Dratler

Akron Law Faculty Publications

Among the joys of being a professor, as distinguished from practicing law, are the leisure and incentive to think and write about the big picture. Another joy is being able to say what you really think. We professors don't have to focus on attracting clients or maintaining an impression of studied understatement and moderation for judges and juries.

In this talk, I'm going to exercise both of these prerogatives. I've been thinking about the big picture in patents for over a quarter century, and I'm more worried than I've ever been.

Let me begin by making my usual (and truthful) …

Single Mothers, Social Capital, And Work-Family Conflict, Teresa Ciabattari Jan 2005

Single Mothers, Social Capital, And Work-Family Conflict, Teresa Ciabattari

Upjohn Institute Working Papers

The purpose of this paper is to examine work-family conflict among low-income, unmarried mothers. I examine how social capital affects work-family conflict and how both social capital and work-family conflict affect employment. I analyze the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study, a national sample of non-marital births collected in 1998-2000 and 1999-2002. Results show that social capital reduces unmarried mothers' reports of work-family conflict, especially for low-income women. In addition, mothers who report high levels of work-family conflict are less likely to be employed; this pattern holds for women who are not looking for work as well as those who …

In Praise Of Carbon: Genre And The 1996 Nobel Lectures In Chemistry By Christian Fredrick Casper, Christian Fredrick Casper Jan 2005

In Praise Of Carbon: Genre And The 1996 Nobel Lectures In Chemistry By Christian Fredrick Casper, Christian Fredrick Casper

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Using genre theory along with the hierarchy of scientific statement types of Latour and Woolgar (1979) and the scientific stases and scientific topoi of Prelli (1989), this thesis analyzes the three Nobel lectures in chemistry from 1996 to discern the characteristics of ceremonial discourse in science and its relation to scientific ethos. Throughout, the Nobel lectures are analyzed in reference to the original research reports published in the scientific literature. The unique social context of the Nobel lectures results in a distinct genre with textual characteristics that include statements with little moderation or hedging, arguments for the long-term significance of …

The Etoile Du Deseret: Portrait Of The French Mission, 1851-1852, Douglas James Geilman Jan 2005

The Etoile Du Deseret: Portrait Of The French Mission, 1851-1852, Douglas James Geilman

Theses and Dissertations

One of John Taylor's most significant achievements during his mission to France, 1849-1851, was the publication of a French-language Latter-day Saint periodical, the Etoile du Déséret. Appearing in twelve issues from May 1851 to December 1852, the Etoile served a variety of functions for the earliest missionaries and members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in France. A study of its historical context and of its contents allows readers a glimpse into the circumstances under which the missionaries labored and into the needs of the growing Church. Furthermore, the Etoile provides a vivid example of John …

Predicting Student Performance In A Statistics Course Using The Mathematics And Statistics Perception Scale (Mpsp), Isabelle D. Cherney, Ramie R. Cooney Jan 2005

Predicting Student Performance In A Statistics Course Using The Mathematics And Statistics Perception Scale (Mpsp), Isabelle D. Cherney, Ramie R. Cooney

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

Students tend to have higher apprehension for a statistics class than for other psychology classes. Because anxiety can impair the performance in a class, and ultimately the mastery of the subject matter, the Mathematics and Statistic Perception Scale (MSPS) was designed to assess students' perceptions of anxiety and attitudes toward statistics as well as provide a tool that could be used in classroom settings. The 22-item scale with three subscales (mathematics perceptions, statistics perceptions, and perceptions of relevance) was administered to 154 undergraduates and showed that over the course of a semester, perceptions of mathematics anxiety tended to decrease and …

The Code Napoléon, Buried But Ruling In Latin America, M C. Mirow Jan 2005

The Code Napoléon, Buried But Ruling In Latin America, M C. Mirow

Faculty Publications

Following Maitland's famous observation on the place of the forms of action in English law at the beginning of the twentieth century, this essay argues that the Code Napoleon has had a similar effect on Latin American law. It examines various factors that have served to bury the Code and those that have served to continue its rule in Latin America. For Latin America, the author paraphrases Maitland to assert that the Code Napoleon we have buried, but it still rules us from its grave.

Beyond The 10/40 Window: When All You Thought You Had To Do Is Not Enough, Bruce Campbell Moyer

Faculty Publications

There is always a danger in being overly focused on a task. When this happens, we can fail to see other tasks or parallel tasks that are equally demanding. This paper focuses on some other “windows,” beyond the “10/40 Window,” that also call for serious attention, concerted prayer, specialized training, their own unique strategies, and a variety of personnel/gifts.

Danish Anti-Americanism: A Socio-Cultural Perspective, Poul Houe Jan 2005

Danish Anti-Americanism: A Socio-Cultural Perspective, Poul Houe

The Bridge

In the spring of 2002, Granta, the distinguished "Magazine of New Writing," put out a special issue in which "twenty-four writers drawn from many countries" reflect on "What We Think of America." On the magazine's back cover, the occasion for their musings is presented as follows:

The September 11 attacks on the US provoked shock and pity in the rest of the world, but mingled with the sympathy was something harsher: anti-Americanism. It wasn't confined to the West Bank or Kabul. It could be heard in English country pubs, in the bars of Paris and Rome, the tea stalls of …

The Bridge

On February 17, 1892, a young man of twenty-five boarded the transatlantic steamer Hekla in the port of Copenhagen to emigrate to the United States of America as had many Danes before him. When he took the decision to emigrate we do not know; but that he was determined to leave is certain. His father died shortly before the departure date and the burial coincided with the sailing date. Why did he leave his home? What happened to him?

On January 1, 1963 The American Evangelical Lutheran Church ceased to exist as a separate entity. The AELC was the new name that had been assumed by the Danish Evangelical Lutheran Church in America in 1954. Therefore, what really came to an end in 1963 was the Danish Evangelical Lutheran Church, which hereinafter shall be referred to simply as the Danish Church.

The Cups Of Blood Are Emptied: Pietism And Cultural Heritage In Two Danish Immigrant Schools On The Great Plains, John Mark Nielsen Jan 2005

The Cups Of Blood Are Emptied: Pietism And Cultural Heritage In Two Danish Immigrant Schools On The Great Plains, John Mark Nielsen

The Bridge

Following the American Civil War, the vast sweep of the Great Plains exerted a powerful force on the imagination of Americans and Northern European immigrants, resulting in a period of rapid settlement. Within immigrant communities, in particular, attempts were made to establish institutions where the language, beliefs and cultural heritage of a people might be preserved. The history of these immigrant institutions mirror the challenges immigrant communities faced in confronting not only the vicissitudes of climate and evolving economic conditions but also the pressures of assimilation.

Portrait Of A Peddler, Enok Mortensen Jan 2005

Portrait Of A Peddler, Enok Mortensen

The Bridge

Editors learn about potential articles in many ways. Last spring my wife and I were participating in "volunteer week" at the Danish Immigrant Archive - Dana College. During one of the twice daily breaks for coffee and kringle, Marilyn Juul Hanson, a volunteer from Cedar Falls, Iowa, shared some anecdotes about her great uncle, an itinerant peddler named Jergen Juul. When I expressed an interest in the story of Jergen Juul, Marilyn and her husband, Roger Hanson, a retired professor of physics at the University of Northern Iowa, gave me a copy of an article in English about the peddler …

The Bridge

Written in the 1930s, Petersen, in his memoirs, tells the story of his life beginning with his childhood in Denmark in the 1860s and concludes in the 1890s when he married and became a settled citizen in Dannebrog, Nebraska. He is best known for his decade-long service as postmaster in Dannebrog and publisher of the Dannebrog News. But instead of telling about his career as postmaster and publisher, he relates, in great detail, events from his youth, his various jobs, his travels from place to place as his work directed him, and incidents that he witnessed. Nevertheless, his story is …
