Community And Democracy: Syracuse Reflections, Richard E.D. Schwartz Jan 2005

Community And Democracy: Syracuse Reflections, Richard E.D. Schwartz

Syracuse Journal of International Law and Commerce

How does the American experience with democracy contribute to our understanding of the prospects for, and paths to, democracy worldwide?" Another half of the papers prepared for the Conference deal with the experience of other countries, many of them moving toward rule-of-law democracy. Taken together, they represent a sample of our present knowledge-and they suggest new directions for future research. Communities with certain qualities contribute to the development and sustaining of democracy. The qualities to which I refer include: mutual respect across lines of division and the creative composition of differences. At Syracuse, we saw two kinds of community: local …

Franklin D. Roosevelt's Psychological Contribution To The United Nations, Richard E. D. Schwartz Jan 2005

Franklin D. Roosevelt's Psychological Contribution To The United Nations, Richard E. D. Schwartz

Syracuse Journal of International Law and Commerce

FDR promoted U.S. participation in the United Nations in several ways. In this article I focus on his use of mass communication to reach individuals and families in the U.S. In his ''fireside chats, " he empathically addressed widely experienced problems and then proposed solutions requiring publicly supported governmental actions. In his first term, that technique gained Roosevelt popular support for the New Deal programs. In his second term, FDR turned the nation's attention to the international situation, drawing on the motivations he had earlier tapped. In the 1940 election, both major parties chose internationalist candidates, and Roosevelt was able …

Theological Education And Hybrid Models Of Distance Learning, Steve Delamarter, Dan Brunner Jan 2005

Theological Education And Hybrid Models Of Distance Learning, Steve Delamarter, Dan Brunner

Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary

The authors document the rise of so-called hybrid models of distance education and articulate their relevance for theological education in North America. In the first section, the authors lay out a typology of the visions for technology current among theological educators. One feature of this typology is the recognition of two very different ways of thinking about distance education. Early-stage thinking is characterized by a strong dichotomy between online and face-to-face courses. Later-stage thinking has tended toward the development of hybrid programs. The following sections explore the history of the development of hybrid models and how hybrid courses and programs …

News Or Speculation? A Comparative Content Analysis Of Headlines And The Prevalence Of Speculative Language In Corporate And Independently Owned Newspapers, Lindsay Hudock Jan 2005

News Or Speculation? A Comparative Content Analysis Of Headlines And The Prevalence Of Speculative Language In Corporate And Independently Owned Newspapers, Lindsay Hudock

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study began with the question of whether the press is conveying messages that contain speculation of future events as opposed to the recounting of current events. Speculative language is a form of subjective speech and as such its presence in press content defies the journalist principle of objectivity. The analysis sought to identify two newspaper's use of speculative language within headlines in the news sections. Two other variables considered were article placement, and the ownership structure of the news organizations. Previous research supports the claim that the ownership structure of an organization can influence the content it publishes (Lacy, …

Analysis Of The Learning-Style Preferences Of Entry-Level, Upper-Division Undergraduate/Graduate Students In Allied Health Identified With Analytic And Global Format Learning-Style Assessments, Dawn Marie Morton-Rias

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this researcher was to identify learning styles of undergraduate and graduate students in allied health and to examine correlations among identified learning-style scores and students’ gender, ethnicity, and age. The goals were to compare learning-style preferences and provide students, faculty, staff, and administrators with empirical information on student learning. One hundred and fifty-four ethnically diverse students participated in the study. The Productivity Environmental Preference Survey (PEPS) (Dunn & Dunn, & Price, 1996) and Building Excellence (BE) (Rundle & Dunn, 2000) were completed by a sample of 87 students. Correlation analyses confirmed relationships between student learning-styles identified with …

Distant Reflections On Current Problems: Ethics And Economics In The Business Of Higher Education, David Dilts, Hedayeh Samavati, Mashaalah Rahnama-Moghadam

Journal of Business & Leadership: Research, Practice, and Teaching (2005-2012)

Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations contains many of the basic tenets of capitalism Less well known is Smith's discussion of the state of education in the late eighteenth century in the latter chapters of the Wealth of Nations. Smith offers a detailed examination of professorial and administrative motivations of his day. Smith's analysis has direct application to many of the same problems that educational critics today have identified. This paper presents Smith's observations in the context of the controversies identified in today's educational reform movement.

The Salary Debate, Sarah C. Mckenzie, Gary W. Ritter Jan 2005

The Salary Debate, Sarah C. Mckenzie, Gary W. Ritter

Policy Briefs

In America, teacher compensation has undergone major changes over the last 200 years. Throughout much of the early 19th century, teachers were often paid with room and board within a community and taught all grades. Around 1921, a form of the single salary schedule still in use today was implemented (Protsik, 1995), where teachers’ salaries were linked to their educational background and their years in the field. Like the salaries of most other public officials, however, teachers’ salaries shift with changing social, economic, and political climates. The pay rate for teachers is also influenced by a number of variables (e.g. …

Learning About Learning And Teaching: Using The Evidence Of Student Achievement For Improvements At Individual, Class And School Level, Reg Allen Jan 2005

Learning About Learning And Teaching: Using The Evidence Of Student Achievement For Improvements At Individual, Class And School Level, Reg Allen

2005 - Using data to support learning

This paper describes the nature, use and importance of some powerful techniques through which teachers can use data to improve student learning. For a teacher, the central purpose of analysing data is to improve the learning of one or more particular students. That is, the individual teacher and the school take the students who come to them and seek to improve the learning of those students. This purpose is different from that of the sociologist seeking to understand patterns of participation, or that of the policy analyst seeking to understand the impact, if any, of policy settings. The possibly powerful generalisations about a …

The Challenge Of Ethnic Diversity, Gary L. Rose Jan 2005

The Challenge Of Ethnic Diversity, Gary L. Rose

Political Science & Global Affairs Faculty Publications

As the census data reveals, the state of Connecticut will experience a sizeable increase in the percentage of Blacks and Hispanics by the year 2025. The projected increase in Blacks and Hispanics will most certainly have political and public policy ramifications in the years ahead.

Demographic trends in Connecticut pose distinct challenges for both political parties. The ability to understand the policy needs of the state's increasingly diverse population, an understanding of how policy needs translate into political behavior will be required among those who seek public office in Connecticut.

Public Policy In Connecticut: Challenges And Perspectives, Gary L. Rose Ed. Jan 2005

Public Policy In Connecticut: Challenges And Perspectives, Gary L. Rose Ed.

Sacred Heart University Press Books

Public Policy in Connecticut examines ten of the key policy challenges that currently confront Connecticut lawmakers. Following an overview essay by the editor, discussing the recent transfer of power to state governments and outlining the policy challenges faced by lawmakers, each of these challenges is taken up in a separate essay by the volume's contributors. The first challenges considered, associated with economic growth, transportation, environmental protection, ethnic diversity, and ethics in politics, affect the Connecticut public at large. The remaining issues discussed are health care, services for the aged, prison overcrowding and recidivism, inner-city education, and higher education affect more …
