Developing An Educational Portfolio And Survey For The New Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Visitor Center : A Capstone Project ..., Tera Farnsworth

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Environmental interpretation allows people to gain an understanding of their surroundings, know why the environment is important and to have a greater appreciation for the environment as a whole. By creating a visitors center in Santa Cruz the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary would like to create educational programs for the public and students to make people more environmentally aware. The overall goal for my project was to compile a database of informal science education centers in the Monterey and Santa Cruz areas, compile a database of schools in Santa Cruz County and use this information to aid in the …

Characterization Of Fog Water Collection Potential At Fort Ord And Glen Deven Ranch Near Big Sur, Gregory Ruiz

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Standard fog collectors (SFCs) that have been used all around were set up at two locations along the Monterey County coastline. The volume of water collected by the SFCs was measured periodically, either by hand or with a data logging tipping-bucket rain gauge. Measurements were carried out from June 26 until October 16 of 2005. The average collection rate at Fort Ord for the period of June 26 to July 22 was 0.08 L/m2/d. The average amount of water collected per day for the period of July 22 to October 16 was 1.17 L/m2/d at Glen Deven Ranch and 0.37 …

Deconstructing Davis V. United States: Intention And Meaning In Ambiguous Requests For Counsel, David Aram Kaiser, Paul Lufkin Jan 2005

Deconstructing Davis V. United States: Intention And Meaning In Ambiguous Requests For Counsel, David Aram Kaiser, Paul Lufkin

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

The authors discuss the United States Supreme Court's decision in Davis v. United States, 512 U.S. 452 (1994), arguing that its holding-that police officers do not have to cease questioning a criminal suspect who utters an ambiguous request for counsel during custodial interrogation-depends on concepts of interpretation that have been discredited by the deconstructionist theory of Jacques Derrida and subsequent literary critics.

Derrida criticized theoretical movements, such as structuralism, that ignored the role of ambiguity in language. In turn, reacting to Derrida's emphasis on the indeterminacy of meaning, other literary critics sought criteria for "objective" interpretation, the search for which …

Statistics is a wonderfully diverse profession and graduate students making career choices have many options — especially in light of the dearth of students moving into the statistical sciences today. The three main career paths at the PhD level are in academics, industry/business and government. Each of these job types offers its own mix of intellectual challenges, financial reward, pressure and security. How a new researcher selects (or is selected by) a specific occupation in the statistical sciences sometimes seems more a function of luck than of conscious decision making. This consideration was one of the first concerns addressed by …

Character Education : Early Intervention, Dianne Thompson Jan 2005

Character Education : Early Intervention, Dianne Thompson

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Imagine a school that demonstrates the virtues that hold a community together such as trust, responsibility and respect. Integrated all phases of a child's school life and future success as a citizen can be the virtues of character. Every day young children go to school to learn basic core subject matter in hopes of gaining the skills necessary for success in today's society, yet face violence, peer cruelty and a degrading moral character. Ever increasing is the need to counter this pervasive trend and in today's market in today's world children need to be educated socially, emotionally and morally. Character …

Inking An Identity, Heather Johnson

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

The art of tattooing has been around for thousands of years and practiced by many of the world's ancient civilizations. Through each millennium this art evolves as new techniques and ideas are incorporated into this practice. This project includes an analysis of the ancient cultures that actively used this form of art. Evolution Of The School District Superintendent Position, Theodore J. Kowalski Jan 2005

Evolution Of The School District Superintendent Position, Theodore J. Kowalski

Educational Leadership Faculty Publications

Clearly, no issue is currently more crucial to the future of the position of school district superintendent than the battle being fought over professional preparation and state licensing. The intent of licensing professionals is to protect society and not the licensee. Consequently, a decision to deregulate a profession should not be made solely in political arenas in which self- and group interests are more likely to outweigh societal interests. This chapter is grounded in the belief that persons within a profession, regardless of their personal views, have a responsibility to ensure that policy debates of this magnitude will be objective …

Is It Necessary To Develop New Performance Motivation And Training Techniques In Response To The Entrance Of Generation Y To The Workforce?, Jeffrey A. King

Seminar Research Paper Series

The distinct work habits and expectations of Generation Y have been a popular topic in literature and corporate seminars, spawning a school of thought that particular human resource strategies should be designed to maximize the potential of this newest generation. Critical analysis raises questions regarding the advisability of adapting performance motivation and training approaches strictly based upon the birth cohort of this newest, significantly large generation entering the American workforce.

Children Living In Poverty, Katie E. Long Jan 2005

Children Living In Poverty, Katie E. Long

Graduate Research Papers

Although many books and articles have been written regarding poverty and its effects among children, there is an increasing need for school counselors to provide programs and support to empower children of poverty. Research indicates that poverty is increasing among Americans (Payne, 2003). Nutrition and health are a major concern among families of poverty, and approximately thirteen million children experience hunger on a daily basis (Prince & Howard, 2002).

Children who have not met their basic needs come to school with a different agenda: survival. Although health is itself an outcome, it can also be viewed as a pathway by …

Joseph Smith’S Many Histories, Richard Bushman Jan 2005

Joseph Smith’S Many Histories, Richard Bushman

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

I wish to explore, in broad general terms, the histories to which historians have attached Joseph Smith. As you can imagine, the context in which he is placed profoundly affects how people see the Prophet, since the history selected for a subject colors everything about it. Is he a money-digger like hundreds of other superstitious Yankees in his day, a religious fanatic like Muhammad was thought to be in Joseph’s time, a prophet like Moses, a religious revolutionary like Jesus? To a large extent, Joseph Smith assumes the character of the history selected for him. The broader the historical context, …

Is Time Spent, Passed Or Counted? The Missing Link Between Time And Accounting History, Paolo Quattrone Jan 2005

Is Time Spent, Passed Or Counted? The Missing Link Between Time And Accounting History, Paolo Quattrone

Accounting Historians Journal

This paper takes its inspiration from Voth's [2000] work on Time and Work in England, 1750-1830 which argues that the British industrial revolution led to greater production levels not because of an increase in the productivity of labor but because of the larger amount of hours worked per week. This change led to a decrease of free time in favor of worked time. If this was the case, one might argue, accounting played a marginal role either in increasing the efficiency of the work force, or in disciplining the shop floor to guarantee control of the labor process. This paper …

Accounting In History, Stephen P. Walker Jan 2005

Accounting In History, Stephen P. Walker

Accounting Historians Journal

Recent studies of publication patterns in accounting history portray a myopic and introspective discipline. Analyses reveal the production and dissemination of accounting history knowledge which focus predominantly on Anglo-American settings and the age of modernity. Limited opportunities exist for contributions from scholars working in languages other than English. Many of the practitioners of accounting history are also shown to be substantially disconnected from the wider community of historians. It is argued in the current paper that interdisciplinary history has the potential to enhance theoretical and methodological creativity and greater inclusivity in the accounting history academy. A practical requirement for this …
