Evaluating Deliberative Democracy: Comparing Habermas' Discourse Ethic And Evaluations Of Consensus Process In Residential Cooperatives, Katheryn Sutter May 2005

Evaluating Deliberative Democracy: Comparing Habermas' Discourse Ethic And Evaluations Of Consensus Process In Residential Cooperatives, Katheryn Sutter

Dissertations and Theses

How do deliberators reason together on what is best? Planners, policy analysts and community developers should know how to recognize the validity of participatory deliberations claimed to give groups voice in policy decisions. Policy analyses have lost power in the face of postmodern critiques of objectivity. Practical policy analyses require more than objective validity for they express results of what Jürgen Habermas refers to as normative rationality. This study followed John Forester's recommended research agenda for rigorous empirical analyses of policy process deliberations using Jürgen Habermas' Theory of Communicative Action. Three successful residential communities were identified with organizational and institutional …

Race And Gender Differences In Two Sanctioning Strategies For Juvenile Offenders, Chantrelle Varnado May 2005

Race And Gender Differences In Two Sanctioning Strategies For Juvenile Offenders, Chantrelle Varnado

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Research suggests that decision-makers often use demographic characteristics for the purpose of influencing the sanctioning strategy allocated. The research study examines the extent to which the sanctioning strategies allocated are influenced by race and gender. The research is based on data gathered from Jefferson Parish Juvenile Services Department of Probation used to examine how race and gender influence juvenile sanctioning strategy allocation. The results from the discriminant analysis offers support for the argument that due to stereotypical perceptions on the part of decision makers, members of minority groups, in particular females may receive differential treatment than their white male counterparts. …

Teachers' Perceptions Of Administrative Leadership Styles And Schools As Professional Learning Communities, Clive Coleman May 2005

Teachers' Perceptions Of Administrative Leadership Styles And Schools As Professional Learning Communities, Clive Coleman

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the relationship of principal and assistant principal leadership style in shaping teachers' perceptions of their schools as professional learning communities. The researcher proposed that the traditional distinctions between the classic modes of leadership, namely, transactional and transformational modes of leadership, are difficult to interpret within the framework of professional learning community without considering the interaction of the principal and assistant principal leadership roles. Using Leithwood's (1992, 1993, 1994) definitions of leadership as transformational and management as transactional, empirical evidence from 81 schools is presented that supports the need for both leadership and management skills in the development …

Second Generation Immigrant Adaptation: Construction Of A Hybrid Cultural Identity, Sonia Ladha May 2005

Second Generation Immigrant Adaptation: Construction Of A Hybrid Cultural Identity, Sonia Ladha

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This study uses a postcolonial perspective to examine the construction of cultural identities in second generation South Asian women. It critiques traditional strategies of immigrant incorporation, including assimilation and cultural pluralism, for their androcentric and essentialist tendencies. It was found that the women constructed a cultural hybrid identity, and using Homi Bhabha's notion of third space, I discuss the process of how this hybrid identity is constructed. A phenomenological approach, in which the subjective voices of the participants are privileged, was used to analyze nine interviews for themes relating to the construction of a hybrid identity.

The Discursive Production Of Subjectivity In Television News: Reflecting The Other On The Obese Child's Body, Elise Chatelain May 2005

The Discursive Production Of Subjectivity In Television News: Reflecting The Other On The Obese Child's Body, Elise Chatelain

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

In this paper, I expand on poststructuralist and feminist theories of the body, gender, and subjectivity through an analysis of media discourse on childhood obesity. Through textual and narrative analyses of news segments on childhood obesity, I demonstrate that the obese child's body, as an abnormal body, is represented as a text of the 'abnormal' conditions in which that body is produced. Thus, the single-mother family structure and/or nonwhite and working class families -- families saturated with the excessive, out-of-control subjectivity of the Other-- are visible on the excessive, out-ofcontrol body of the obese child. I will argue that the …

Perceptions Of Low Ses, High Academic Achievement Vietnamese Middle Grades Students Of Factors That Have Contributed To Their School Achievement, Judith Scott May 2005

Perceptions Of Low Ses, High Academic Achievement Vietnamese Middle Grades Students Of Factors That Have Contributed To Their School Achievement, Judith Scott

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This study examines the perceptions of low socioeconomonic status, high academic achievement Vietnamese middle grades students in the Vietnamese community with respect to the roles that their parents and communities play in supporting academic achievement. Previous research has established the positive relationships between parent involvement and student achievement, and between high SES and student achievement. However, this study explores the perceptions of high achieving middle grades students with low SES. Through focus group discussions and interviews, this study examines student achievement within the theoretical framework of social capital.

Law And Human Nature: The Social-Adaptive Function Of The Normative Behavior, Atahualpa Fernandez May 2005

Law And Human Nature: The Social-Adaptive Function Of The Normative Behavior, Atahualpa Fernandez

ExpressO

The objective of this article is to offer a critical (re)interpretation of genesis and evolution, object and purpose, as well as useful qualified methods for interpreting, justifying and applying modern practical law, all with the intention of putting philosophic thought and contemporary formal theory of reason at the service of hermeutics and juridical argumentation. Law is no more—no less—than an social-adaptive strategy, evermore complex, but always noticeably deficient, used to articulate argumentatively—in fact, not always with justice—through the virtue of prudence, elementary relational social ties through which men construct approved styles of interaction and social structure, i.e., to organize and …

Work And Family: Communicative Actions And Interactions In Employed Women's Management Of Dual Roles, Carla Renee Pope May 2005

Work And Family: Communicative Actions And Interactions In Employed Women's Management Of Dual Roles, Carla Renee Pope

Communication

Recent changes in American families have resulted in an influx of mothers entering the workforce. Research has addressed work and family issues by exploring the challenges people experience in their daily routines and social interactions. Medved (2004) explores married women's micro-practices in ordinary, everyday life to provide an understanding of how women negotiate work and family. This research extends Medved's work, by examining the micro-practices of employed mothers without domestic partners. This study employs conversational interviewing as a means of data gathering and an analysis technique focused on identifying routines or micro-practices in daily interaction. This research explores three issues: …

Community Identity And Sense Of Place In Fairbanks, Alaska, Eun Sook Sul May 2005

Community Identity And Sense Of Place In Fairbanks, Alaska, Eun Sook Sul

Communication

Autobiographical narratives of shared experience are explored in a narrative qualitative approach regarding people who have come to Fairbanks, Alaska and decided to stay. Six co-researchers shared their lived experience regarding what influenced their staying in Alaska and resulting changes to their identity. This research is based on a Communication perspective, in particular, adopting Costructionism as epistemology for this study. Social Construction of Reality is the theoretical basis for a discussion of social construction of identity, social construction of community, and social construction of sense of place. This study focuses on the experience of changes in the co-researchers' identity through …

Family Models For Earning And Caring: Implications For Child Care, Roderic Beaujot, Zenaida Ravanera May 2005

Family Models For Earning And Caring: Implications For Child Care, Roderic Beaujot, Zenaida Ravanera

PSC Discussion Papers Series

The bases for family change include an economy that provides more work opportunities for women, and a cultural orientation that values equal opportunity and legitimates family models other than the traditional breadwinner model. At the same time, both quantitative and qualitative evidence suggest a prevalent preference for making accommodations for children that include considerable time with children, especially in the infant and toddler years. Thus the average experience is for women to do less and for men to do more paid work in two-parent families that include young children in the home. Our reading of parental preferences suggests an interest …

Dogs For Reducing Wildlife Damage To Organic Crops: A Case Study, Kurt C. Vercauteren, Nathan W. Seward, Daniel L. Hirchert, Michael L. Jones, Scott F. Beckerman May 2005

Dogs For Reducing Wildlife Damage To Organic Crops: A Case Study, Kurt C. Vercauteren, Nathan W. Seward, Daniel L. Hirchert, Michael L. Jones, Scott F. Beckerman

Wildlife Damage Management Conference

Deer (Odocoileus spp.) damage millions of dollars in agricultural crops each year in the United States. A variety of frightening devices and repellants have been developed to reduce crop depredation, however most are effective temporarily (< 6 months). Several types of fences are available, but the most effective are expensive, time consuming to install, and may be considered aesthetically displeasing. Additional means to control wildlife damage to agriculture are needed. We evaluated the efficacy of dogs (Canis familiaris) over a several year period for preventing crop damage caused by white-tailed deer (O. virginianus) and other wildlife at an organic fruit and vegetable farm in south-central Wisconsin. Annual losses at the farm before the introduction of dogs were estimated at $3,177 in 1997 and $4,391 in 1999. One field was protected with 2 crop protection …

Situational And Driver Characteristics Associated With Deer-Vehicle Collisions In Southeastern Michigan, Alix Marcoux, Graham J. Hickling, Shawn J. Riley, Scott R. Winterstein May 2005

Situational And Driver Characteristics Associated With Deer-Vehicle Collisions In Southeastern Michigan, Alix Marcoux, Graham J. Hickling, Shawn J. Riley, Scott R. Winterstein

Wildlife Damage Management Conference

Deer-vehicle collisions (DVCs) create societal impacts throughout the range of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginanus). In Michigan reported DVCs increased by nearly 60% between 1992-2003, with current estimates at more than 65,000 DVCs per year and a mean of $2,300 vehicle damage. To better understand where to direct education and information programs, we used Office of Highway Safety Planning (OHSP) data, 2001-2003, to profile driver characteristics and accident situations of DVCs in Washtenaw, Oakland, and Monroe Counties in Michigan. Each county varies in intensity of land use, human and deer densities, and available deer habitat. Deer density in Washtenaw, …

What Is Legal Doctrine, Emerson Tiller, Frank B. Cross May 2005

What Is Legal Doctrine, Emerson Tiller, Frank B. Cross

Public Law and Legal Theory Papers

Legal doctrine is the currency of the law. In many respects, doctrine is the law, at least as it comes from courts. Judicial opinions create the rules or standards that comprise legal doctrine. Yet the nature and effect of legal doctrine has been woefully understudied. Researchers from the legal academy and from political science departments have conducted extensive research on the law, but they have largely ignored the others’ efforts. Part of the reason for this unfortunate disconnect is that neither has effectively come to grips with the descriptive meaning of legal doctrine. In this article, we attempt to describe …

Turning Gold Into Epg: Lessons From Low-Tech Democratic Experimentalism For Electronic Rulemaking And Other Ventures In Cyberdemocracy , Peter M. Shane May 2005

Turning Gold Into Epg: Lessons From Low-Tech Democratic Experimentalism For Electronic Rulemaking And Other Ventures In Cyberdemocracy , Peter M. Shane

The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law Working Paper Series

Empowered Participatory Governance, or EPG, is a model of governance developed by Archon Fung and Erik Olin Wright that seeks to connect a set of normative commitments for strengthening democracy with a set of institutional design prescriptions intended to meet that objective. It is derived partly from democratic theory and partly from the study of real-world attempts to institutionalize transformative strategies for democratizing social and political decision making. This paper reviews Fung and Wright's recent volume, Deepening Democracy: Institutional Innovations in Empowered Participatory Governance, and considers the relevance of the authors' and other contributors' insights for the future of a …
