Academic Freedom, Tenure, And Student Evaluations Of Faculty: A Response To Haskell And His Critics, Edith J. Cisneros-Cohernour
Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)
I comment on the strengths and limitations of Haskell's article and provide a critical review of his arguments about the negative impact of SEF on tenure and other administrative decisions. I object to the limited evidence supporting the claim that the use of student evaluations per se challenges academic freedom.

Political Leadership In Africa: A Case Study Of Ghana's Presidents Kwame Nkrumah And Jerry John Rawlings, Johnson N. Gwaikolo
Political Leadership In Africa: A Case Study Of Ghana's Presidents Kwame Nkrumah And Jerry John Rawlings, Johnson N. Gwaikolo
Theses and Graduate Projects
The effectiveness of a political leader depends on the leader's ability to formulate a vision, demonstrate genuine concern for the people, and create a constituency or following to translate the vision into concrete actions that produce change. In Ghana, these behavior patterns, which are characteristics of transformational leadership, have been demonstrated by Nkrumah and Rawlings, leading to independence for Ghana and later, the development of more stable and stronger institutions. Nkrumah rallied his colleagues and a majority of the Ghanaian citizens to seek independence. Unfortunately, Nkrumah could not maintain the commitment of his colleagues to remain focused on other aspects …

Bishops 2005, Carl Milofsky
Northern Ireland Archive
This is the third time the two retired Bishops visited our classes. In the first 15 minutes of each tape Edward Daly, the Catholic Bishop, and James Mehaffey, the Anglican Bishop, briefly tell their life histories. This tape has two significant substantive aspects. First, there is discussion of integrated education in Northern Ireland and how the Bishops view this educational innovation. Bishop Daly is critical of what he considers mechanical procedures to force integration. He thinks to achieve peace in Northern Ireland root political problems must be addressed. The second important content on this tape is Bishop Daly's account of …

Moral Development Study In The 21st Century: Introduction To Moral Motivation Through The Life Span: Nebraska Symposium On Motivation, Volume 51, Carolyn P. Edwards, Gustavo Carlo
Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications
Questions of right and wrong, good and bad, lawful and unlawful, have been debated by philosophers, theologians, scholars, and ordinary people since ancient times. The moral domain represents humanity’s answers to three questions: What is the right thing to do? How is the best state of affairs achieved? What qualities make for a good person? However, the scientific investigation of the moral life has a much shorter intellectual history than does philosophical and religious reflection; nevertheless, it is not new. Moral development theory and research emerged as a critical topic over 100 years ago, at the beginning of the 20th …

Grace Fraser Integrated Education In Practice, Carl Milofsky
Grace Fraser Integrated Education In Practice, Carl Milofsky
Northern Ireland Archive
Education researcher Grace Fraser talks about her research on the founding and operation of integrated schools and the challenges of running them. She distinguishes between schools that were called integrated but did little in terms of programs, schools that were integrated and ran educational programs but did little to affect interaction, and those that intensively worked to teach children about tolerance and to involve principles of integration into all aspects of their programs. Integrated schools began as non-funded, parent initiated efforts to create an alternative style of education. Parent involvement took enormous work and this process a major focus of …

Taking Tough Choices Seriously: Public Administration And Individual Moral Agency, Ciarán O’Kelly, Melvin J. Dubnick
Taking Tough Choices Seriously: Public Administration And Individual Moral Agency, Ciarán O’Kelly, Melvin J. Dubnick
Faculty Publications
Using the concepts of thick and thin relationships as the basis for ethical behavior, this paper critiques the emphasis on discretion in the mainstream administrative ethics literature and argues that moral and other dilemmas facing public administrators provides a more useful frame. Two examples drawn from the UK Hutton Investigation into the death of David Kelly are used to demonstrate the relevance and usefulness of this approach.

Chris Gilligan, Carl Milofsky
Chris Gilligan, Carl Milofsky
Northern Ireland Archive
Gilligan has an intellectual position that is critical of the idea of identity. He thinks identities are generally fragmented. For many people sectarian identity is less important than other issues and commitments in their lives. In this lecture Chris goes over stress, PTSD, and other disorders that lead to counseling, but where he believes objective symptoms are not the reason children are given counseling. He discusses counseling itself and the issue of identity. Storytelling is also a key topic.

Investigating Affective Dimensions Of Whiteness In The Cultural Studies Writing Classroom: Toward A Critical, Feminist, Anti-Racist Pedagogy, Allison Brimmer
Investigating Affective Dimensions Of Whiteness In The Cultural Studies Writing Classroom: Toward A Critical, Feminist, Anti-Racist Pedagogy, Allison Brimmer
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation seeks to help teachers understand the ways that affect is tied to the dominant ideology of white supremacy in contemporary U.S. society. It argues that affect—the complex confluence of feeling and judgment—is bound intricately to racism, sexism, classism, heterosexism, etc. In this work I attempt to deconstruct the social construction of affect that fuels dominant white ideology— what some scholars call whiteness—in the context of white teachers and students in the cultural studies writing classroom. With the lofty yet ultimately empowering goal of effecting anti-racist change in the classroom and in the profession, I trace affective dimensions of …

Justice Douglas, Justice O'Connor, And George Orwell: Does The Constitution Compel Us To Disown Our Past, Steven D. Smith
Justice Douglas, Justice O'Connor, And George Orwell: Does The Constitution Compel Us To Disown Our Past, Steven D. Smith
University of San Diego Public Law and Legal Theory Research Paper Series
Justice William O. Douglas's majority opinion in Zorach v. Clauson famously asserted that "[w]e are a religious people whose institutions presuppose a Supreme Being." What did Douglas mean, and was he right? More recently, in cases involving the Ten Commandments, the Pledge of Allegiance and other public expressions and symbols, the Supreme Court has said that the Constitution prohibits government from endorsing religion. Can Douglas's "Supreme Being" assertion be reconciled with the "no endorsement" prohibition? And does the more modern doctrine demand that we forget, falsify, or forswear our pervasively religious political heritage? This essay, presented as the William O. …
