Development Of Protein-Imprinted Polysiloxane Biomaterials: Protein Selectivity And Cellular Responses, Kyoungmi Lee
Development Of Protein-Imprinted Polysiloxane Biomaterials: Protein Selectivity And Cellular Responses, Kyoungmi Lee
University of Kentucky Master's Theses
Surface modification is an extensively researched approach in order to overcomethe limitations, and improve the performance of orthopedic and dental implants. It is atthe surface of the implant materials that the initial interactions of tissues or body fluidstake place. Therefore, surface properties of biomaterials are the important factors that cancontrol these biological responses. Molecular imprinting is a surface modificationtechnique that creates specific recognition sites on the surface of biomaterials. Todevelop the recognition sites, a functional monomer is assembled with templatebiomolecule and then crosslinked. After removal of the template, the surface can rebindthe molecules. Therefore, desired reactions can be initiated at …

Fabrication And Characterization Of Schottky Diode And Heterojunction Solar Cells Based On Copper Phthalocyanine (Cupc), Buckminster Fullerene (C60) And Titanium Dioxide (Tio2), Subhash C. C. Vallurupalli
University of Kentucky Master's Theses
Organic solar cells are cheaper and much easier to fabricate than the conventional inorganic solar cells, but they suffer from low efficiencies due to low carrier mobilities in organic films. In this study Copper Phthalocyanine (CuPc) and Buckminster Fullerene (C60) based Schottky diodes were fabricated on ITO coated glass substrates to study their performance and a study of the effect of thickness on the cell parameters of CuPc Schottky diodes was made. Also, TiO2 based devices were studied to see the effect of TiO2 layer on the cell parameters. The J-V curves were analyzed for series resistance, diode ideality factor …

Fabrication And Characterization Of Cupc Based Organic Solar Cells, Balaji Parthasarathy
University of Kentucky Master's Theses
In this work, organic solar cells of the configuration ITO/Pedot:PSS/CuPc/PTCBI/Al (Indium tin oxide/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): polystyrene sulfonic acid/copper phthalocyanine/3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylic bisbenzimidazole/aluminum) were investigated. A high open-circuit voltage (Voc) of 1.15 V was obtained when the PTCBI layer was 7 nm thick. Lower Voc values were observed for the same structure with silver, copper and gold electrodes instead of aluminum. However, short-circuit current density (Jsc) with these electrodes was much higher (4 mA/cm2) than in the case of aluminum (0.12 mA/cm2). Results were interpreted in terms of a modified CuPc/Al Schottky diode for the thin PTCBI case and a CuPc/PTCBI heterojunction for the thick …

Effects Of Stochastic (Random) Surface Roughness On Hydrodynamic Lubrication Of Deterministic Asperity, Prerit Vyas
Effects Of Stochastic (Random) Surface Roughness On Hydrodynamic Lubrication Of Deterministic Asperity, Prerit Vyas
University of Kentucky Master's Theses
In order to achieve enhanced and cost-effective performance of engineering components, Surface Engineering embraces traditional and innovative surface technologies which modify the surface properties of metallic and non-metallic engineering components for specific and sometime unique engineering purposes. The surface roughness of an engineered surface may be classified as: the random surface roughness which is a product of surface finishing and the deterministic surface roughness which is engineered to increase the lubrication characteristics of the hydro dynamically lubricated thrust ring. The effect of stochastic/random roughness can not be ignored when the roughness is of the same amplitude as that of fluid …
Experimental And Analytical Study Of Friction Stir Processing, Basil M. Darras
Experimental And Analytical Study Of Friction Stir Processing, Basil M. Darras
University of Kentucky Master's Theses
Friction stir processing (FSP) has recently become an effective microstructural modifications technique. Reported results showed that for different alloys, FSP produces very fine equiaxed and homogeneous grain structure. FSP is considered to be a new processing technique and more experimental and analytical investigations are needed to advance the industrial utilization of FSP. Most of the work that has been done in the friction stir processing field is experimental and limited modeling activities have been conducted. Attempts to develop a predictive model to correlate the resulting microstructure with process parameters are scarce. In this work, commercial 5052 Aluminum alloy sheets are …

Using Sequential Imagery To Evaluate Aspects Of Seed Vigor And Germination, Manjul Dutt
University of Kentucky Master's Theses
A sequential imaging system using a flat bed scanner interfaced to a personal computer was developed to study seed germination and vigor. The utility of the system was demonstrated in studies relating aspects of seed vigor in impatiens seed lots and for dormancy release in two woody perennials. Impatiens seed lots were kept in storage for 6 months to obtain a range in vigor levels. The ability to see differences at the individual seed level was possible because of the development of the sequential imaging system. It was observed that seeds deteriorated both under optimum 4OC as well as 25OC …

Trying To Save The Garden: What If “Rat Choice” Hadn’T Invaded Public Policy And Public Administration? A Public Administration Satire, Terence Garrett
Political Science Faculty Publications
The study of public administration is a huge garden of fruits and vegetables. There are a wide variety of different plant species that are beneficial to the public interest. Unfortunately, however, every garden also harbors pests, both of the plant and animal kind. In this essay, the “garden” represents the fruits enjoyed by a democratic public administration and the primary destructive force is the unchecked power of the rat.1 The rat represents the worst of capitalist behavior that undermines democracy and public service. First, we will make a simple salad comprised of fruit, nuts, and vegetables. Second, we will be …

What Was Old Is New Again: Markedness And Photography, Marie Kennedy
What Was Old Is New Again: Markedness And Photography, Marie Kennedy
Librarian Publications & Presentations
This research applies the linguistic construct of markedness to photography to demonstrate that due to time and technology color photography has changed from the marked to unmarked object within a thirty-year span. A sample of articles from 1940 to 1970 from the weekly photography column in the New York Times was analyzed to trace color photography as it moved from its marked, or out-of-the-ordinary, status to an unmarked, or normal or expected status. Analysis finds that as of 1970 the distinction of the color photograph as ‘new’ was no longer a significant topic in the newspaper column, suggesting …

The Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) is a policy tool that requires a certain percentage of renewable energy to be included in the portfolio of electricity resources serving a state or a country. The main purpose of an RPS is to foster the development of renewable energy market, increase the energy security by reducing the dependence on the imported energy sources (oil, etc.), and, to provide environmental benefits from using more renewable energy. There are different approaches to the design and implementation of RPS in different states in U.S. and the degree of achieving a success of the policy differs also, …
Polyaniline Nanotubes: Catalysis And Their Conversion To Carbon Nanotubes, Stephen Paquette
Polyaniline Nanotubes: Catalysis And Their Conversion To Carbon Nanotubes, Stephen Paquette
Theses
Polyaniline nanotubes, first synthesized by Parasarathy and Martin in 1994, have been studied extensively in recent years.[1] The study of these nanodimensional particles has been oriented mostly toward an attempt to understand the electrical and magnetic properties surrounding these semi-one dimensional objects and also toward applications for their utilization.[2] The ability to produce these nano-particles chemically but, without a template was first discovered by Wan in 1999.[3] The use of chemical oxidants often produces undesirable byproducts during the reaction. Therefore, we have used this as a launching point in order to first mirror this template-less synthesis in our lab and …

The mean avalanche current impulse response in an avalanche photodiode exhibits an initial transient and then grows or decays, above or below breakdown, at exponential rates which depend only on the probability distributions of the electron and hole ionization events. The process continues while the electric field profile remains unchanged by the applied bias or the evolving space charge. Below breakdown the distribution in the avalanche duration also exhibits an initial transient and then decays exponentially at the same rate as the mean current. Below breakdown the standard deviation in current decays exponentially at one half of the rate of …
An Historical Retrospective On The Origin Of And Changes To The Worker's Compensation Insurance Industry, Gary Eure
Theses
Workers' compensation insurance companies have been at the vanguard of workplace safety initiatives maintaining laboratories, training facilities, intern programs, and hierarchical structures. Up until the late 1980's, risk control services were provided to clients as a customer service, with the costs hidden in the premiums. Many companies estimated 4-5 percent of the premium amount was devoted to risk control departments. The late 1980s brought about a change that some attribute to a misapplication of Deming's Total Quality Management (TQM) philosophy. Insurance companies tried to make the move to accountability, thinking that it would drive customer service to a "Deming" level …

Two tourism-oriented travel samples were drawn from recent time periods that represented economic growth (expansion) and recession cycles in the O: S. economy. Analysis suggests that during the recession period, a greater percentage of theme park visitors chose to travel by air. Second, theme park travelers were more likely to visit friends or family during the recession period. Third, recession theme park travelers were 10 years older, on the average, than their rapid growth counterparts. The average age difference of theme park visitors was found to be significantly different during cyclical economic periods. Research findings support the need for additional …

Naturally occurring viruses are extremely abundant in aquatic systems, and they infect bacteria, cyanobacteria, prokaryotic and eukaryotic phytoplankton, heterotrophic nanoflagellates, fish and mammals. Viral infections of single-celled organisms have been studied intensively in the past decade, but little is known about the effects of viruses on aquatic metazoans, other than for some economically important species. Because zooplankton assemblages are often dominated in number and biomass by copepods, we used them as model organisms to study the effects of naturally occurring viruses on higher trophic levels. We attempted to induce viral infection in laboratory-reared cultures of the estuarine copepod Acartia tonsa …
