Walden: A Sacred Geography, Joy Whiteley Ackerman Jan 2005

Walden: A Sacred Geography, Joy Whiteley Ackerman

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

In this study, I explore Walden as a place of pilgrimage. Walden Pond is located in Concord, Massachusetts, a place associated with Henry David Thoreau, a 19th century icon of American environmentalism. The site of his simple dwelling (and the focus of his book by the same name) is now a state park and national landmark that receives over half a million recreational users and tourists each year, in addition to visitors with a particular interest in Thoreau’s life and writing. I took two approaches to Walden’s sacred geography, using phenomenological methods to explore the poetics of pilgrimage and a …

A Function-Based Approach To Establishing Standardization And Flexible Work Cells For High-Variety, Low-Volume Manufacturing, Yamkelani Moyo Jan 2005

A Function-Based Approach To Establishing Standardization And Flexible Work Cells For High-Variety, Low-Volume Manufacturing, Yamkelani Moyo

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Certain types of high-variety, low-volume manufacturing operations employ clusters of machines to execute general classes of operations in the manufacture of their product mix, but those operations differ significantly from job to job. Consequently operations are not standardized and batch and queue operational strategies are employed with all attendant shortcomings. However, closer examination reveals that these operations largely consist of a small number of elemental machine functions that are exercised in various combinations. The functions provide a basis to for defining richly descriptive standardized work at the individual process level using parameters to distinguish the unique settings and characteristics for …

Comparison Of Hyperspectral Imagery Target Detection Algorithm Chains, David C. Grimm Jan 2005

Comparison Of Hyperspectral Imagery Target Detection Algorithm Chains, David C. Grimm

Theses

Detection of a known target in an image has several different approaches. The complexity and number of steps involved in the target detection process makes a comparison of the different possible algorithm chains desirable. Of the different steps involved, some have a more significant impact than others on the final result the ability to find a target in an image. These more important steps often include atmospheric compensation, noise and dimensionality reduction, background characterization, and detection (matched filtering for this research). A brief overview of the algorithms to be compared for each step will be presented.

This research seeks to …

Surface Modification Of Plga Biomaterials For Site-Directed Immobilization Of Growth Factors, Jessica Bennett Lynn Sharon Jan 2005

Surface Modification Of Plga Biomaterials For Site-Directed Immobilization Of Growth Factors, Jessica Bennett Lynn Sharon

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Biodegradable polymer materials, specifically poly(lactic-co-glycolide) (PLGA) can be used as bone replacements for bone regeneration. Scaffolds can be prepared to be porous to induce bone growth into a scaffold so that it is replaced with natural tissue as the polymer degrades. However, simply using PLGA will result in formation of scar tissue rather than regeneration of natural bone. Therefore focus has turned to attaching growth factors to the PLGA molecules to elicit a specific cellular response when the implant is placed in the body. Site-directed immobilization utilizes specific groups on both the biomaterial and biomolecule so that growth factors can …

Effects Of Stochastic (Random) Surface Roughness On Hydrodynamic Lubrication Of Deterministic Asperity, Prerit Vyas Jan 2005

Effects Of Stochastic (Random) Surface Roughness On Hydrodynamic Lubrication Of Deterministic Asperity, Prerit Vyas

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

In order to achieve enhanced and cost-effective performance of engineering components, Surface Engineering embraces traditional and innovative surface technologies which modify the surface properties of metallic and non-metallic engineering components for specific and sometime unique engineering purposes. The surface roughness of an engineered surface may be classified as: the random surface roughness which is a product of surface finishing and the deterministic surface roughness which is engineered to increase the lubrication characteristics of the hydro dynamically lubricated thrust ring. The effect of stochastic/random roughness can not be ignored when the roughness is of the same amplitude as that of fluid …
