Alternative Teacher Education And Professional Preparedness: A Study Of Parochial And Public School Contexts, John L. Watzke
Alternative Teacher Education And Professional Preparedness: A Study Of Parochial And Public School Contexts, John L. Watzke
Journal of Catholic Education
As staffing in Catholic K-12 schools has transitioned to a predominantly lay teaching corps over the past 50 years, a parallel process of secularization has taken place in teacher education programs at Catholic colleges and universities. The tradition of teaching as a vocation in the formation of vowed religious has been replaced by standard programs of educational foundations, course work, and field experiences with a primary emphasis on the issues and needs of public schools. Many factors contribute to this focus in Catholic higher education: financial concerns; teacher candidate preference; state laws; lack of proximity, affiliation, or experience with Catholic …

Transformation Of Rural Teachers Earning Graduate Degrees, Susan A. Santo
The Qualitative Report
This study tells the stories of four successful graduate students within a cohort of learners who were earning graduate degrees in technology for education and training by distance. The students were practicing teachers in the Dakota Interactive Academic Link (DIAL) consortium. Courses were offered by the University of South Dakota, using videoconferencing through the statewide Digital Distance Network (DDN) and WebCT asynchronous discussions. Mezirows 1991 theory of transformative learning suggests that adult learners may experience a transformational experience. Results showed that the four study participants experienced major changes in their way of thinking about learning and themselves. Conducting longitudinal studies …
Developing New Knowledge From Health-Care Industry Quality Practices To Identify And Report Patient Incidents, Anna H. Gibson
Developing New Knowledge From Health-Care Industry Quality Practices To Identify And Report Patient Incidents, Anna H. Gibson
Student Scholarship
The focus of this study is to develop a sense of managements' approach to removing medical error or occurrence reporting barriers within their hospital system. Managers perceive leadership, communication, policy changes, procedure changes, education, training, and feedback as fundamental approaches. Yet, scholarly research indicates a reporting barrier can be attributed a lack of feedback to staff on previously reported errors. The staff not only desires constructive feedback, but views feedback as a means to learn from mistakes. The study findings indicate there are three levels of feedback. Although institutional and managerial feedback is provided, what appears to be missing is …
Personal Evolution: Reflections On A Journey To Self-Understanding, Michelle K. Morgan
Personal Evolution: Reflections On A Journey To Self-Understanding, Michelle K. Morgan
Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection
This synthesis is a reflective narrative scaffolded by three years of living and learning in a culture of thinking. I designed it to function as a record of my personal thinking evolution that I can refer back when I need inspiration months or years from now, as it defines where I was when I arrived, includes salient highlights from my three years in the program and ends with future directions. I came to CCT as a discouraged teacher confused about my future in education and frustrated with the rigorous demands of preparing students for high stakes testing. Learning to employ …

Next Steps In The Journey Toward Self-Fulfillment Through Critical And Creative Thinking, Charles Rauscher
Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection
This work addresses the need for organizational change in the workplace. Too often businesses and companies ignore the advantages of critical and creative thinking. This project first explores some of my thinking patterns relative to designing a synthesis project. What are my interests and what effect do these have in determining a direction for this synthesis paper? Next, I discuss the concepts and ideas surrounding critical and creative thinking from both an individual and organization point of view. Theories and ideas are presented from key critical and creative thinking researchers. My introspection of what I deem to be important aspects …

Teachers' Perceptions Of Administrative Leadership Styles And Schools As Professional Learning Communities, Clive Coleman
Teachers' Perceptions Of Administrative Leadership Styles And Schools As Professional Learning Communities, Clive Coleman
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This study examined the relationship of principal and assistant principal leadership style in shaping teachers' perceptions of their schools as professional learning communities. The researcher proposed that the traditional distinctions between the classic modes of leadership, namely, transactional and transformational modes of leadership, are difficult to interpret within the framework of professional learning community without considering the interaction of the principal and assistant principal leadership roles. Using Leithwood's (1992, 1993, 1994) definitions of leadership as transformational and management as transactional, empirical evidence from 81 schools is presented that supports the need for both leadership and management skills in the development …

Identifying Social, Cultural, And Pedagogical Factors That Contribute To Minority Students' Low Academic Achievement, Deborah C. Shoemaker
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to identify, evaluate, and develop strategies to eliminate barriers in the educational setting that negatively impact minority students' motivation to achieve academic success. Major aspects of the methodology plan included a self-guided survey with two open-ended questions. The sample size was approximately 106 elementary school students from Oak Valley Elementary School in Deptford, New Jersey. The data analysis method assessed students' and parents' beliefs as to the cause of poor academic motivation and performance in relation to the academic achievement gap. The survey responses revealed several ideas and suggestions that may be instrumental in …

Organization Communication In University And College Public Relations And Marketing Capacities, Kathryn Rumpza
Theses and Graduate Projects
This paper explores communication issues in public relations and marketing capacities at institutions of higher education. The basis for this Leadership Application Project (LAP) starts with three basic assumptions: 1) Communication from leadership is critical; 2) Information sharing is important in any educational institution; and 3) Individuals working in the areas of public relations and marketing have a crucial role in communicating the goals and mission of any institution. A review of the literature explores the roles of leadership, history, and theories specific to organizational communication in this field.
Finally, a theoretical model was developed based on the research findings …

Occupational Stress In Child Protection Social Workers, Kristina M. Narcum
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to examine if social workers in a child protection agency report greater levels of stress than individuals working in other professions. Paper-and-pencil versions of the Pressure Management Indicator (PMI) questionnaire were distributed to all participants as a measure of occupational stress. Participants' responses were analyzed using an independent samples t-test to examine whether there was a statistically significant difference between the responses of the two groups. There were significant findings in nine out of twenty-four subscales of the PMI. The results from these areas show that the social workers feel more insecure about …
Spirituality: A Way To Alternate Subjectivity?, Mihaela Kelemen, Tuomo Peltonen
Spirituality: A Way To Alternate Subjectivity?, Mihaela Kelemen, Tuomo Peltonen
Organization Management Journal
This paper emphasizes the contribution of Michel Foucault and Pierre Hadot to discussions of workplace spirituality. It is argued that their understanding of spirituality differs significantly from the mainstream management contributions: they view spirituality as a distinct form of post-modern subjectivity in organizations and regard the subject as continuous flow emerging and being constructed not so much at the crossroad of institutions and macro-structures but from within, with the help of self-formation practices. We term the latter spirituality and argue, firstly, that there are strong (albeit controversial) connections between spiritual practices, the history of Christianity, and the philosophy of antiquity. …
Should Critical Management Studies And Organization Development Collaborate? Invitation To A Contemplation, Maxim Voronov
Should Critical Management Studies And Organization Development Collaborate? Invitation To A Contemplation, Maxim Voronov
Organization Management Journal
In this article, the author argues that despite important differences between Critical Management Studies (CMS) and Organization Development (OD), there is enough common ground to make a dialogue worthwhile for both fields and for management practice. The author outlines some major "objectives" of each field, noting some important but frequently overlooked similarities and complementarities between them. Power and empowerment are offered as examples of focal topics around which the two disciplines could have a productive discussion, suggesting that such an exchange would help CMS’ important insights about power to have more of an impact on organizational practice while enhancing OD's …
Principal And Teacher Flow Of Influence In High-Achieving, High Poverty Schools, Lisa Murley
Principal And Teacher Flow Of Influence In High-Achieving, High Poverty Schools, Lisa Murley
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The research problem grounding this study was that due to the increased accountability from state and national school reform efforts, the principal and teacher cannot steadily increase student outcomes in their isolated roles. A two-way flow of influence should exist between the principal and teacher to increase instructional capacity. The purpose of this study was to investigate the flow of influence in three highpoverty, high-achieving elementary schools to see in what ways social influence was exchanged between principals and teachers and how might this exchange increase instructional capacity. The two central research questions were: 1. In what ways do principals …

How School Counselors Gain Support To Implement Comprehensive Guidance And Counseling Programs, Jo Ann Grant Edd
Dissertations
The school counseling field is evolving from a focus on ancillary activities to a commitment to comprehensive guidance and counseling programs. Understanding strategies school counselors have used in gaining support from key stakeholders to implement comprehensive guidance and counseling programs can be a valuable addition to the literature of school counseling. The present study investigated how elementary and secondary school counselors gained support when implementing comprehensive guidance and counseling programs based on the National Standards for School Counseling Programs. A qualitative methodology was used in the study. The findings revealed that: (a) counselors studied believed their role in gaining support …

How Leaders Use The Construct Of Culture To Influence Change Resistance: A Study Of A Planned Change Initiative In A Combined Government And Military Organization, Derek R. Noether Edd
Dissertations
The construct of organizational culture has been used to interpret various aspects of organizational life, including organizational leadership and organizational change. The literature indicates that leaders can influence organizational change by attending to and modifying an organization's cultural dimensions. Much of this literature, however, is theoretical and speculative, and the empirical work that does exist has focused mostly on business. The purpose of this case study was to develop an understanding of how leaders in a combined government and military organization used the notion of culture during a two-and-a-half year planned change initiative. The study explored the strategies and mental …

Synthesizing E-Government Stage Models – A Meta-Synthesis Based On Meta-Ethnography Approach, Keng Siau, Y. Long
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The growing interest in e-government raises the question of stages in e-government development. A few stage models for e-government have been proposed. Without a common e-government stage model, different research in e-government may be based on different stage models. This presents a difficulty in comparing and understanding different research results. In this research, we synthesize the existing e-government stage models so that there is a common frame of reference for researchers and practitioners in the area.

The Courage To Change: Striving For Magnet Hospital Recognition, Janet M. Jones Edd
Dissertations
In the ever-changing environment of health care, good leaders are of utmost importance to the effective functioning of the hospital. Leadership in the hospital setting requires innovativeness and courage. This means the passion to discover, create and experience the unknown. Until recently why some hospitals attract and retain good nurses while others do not was unknown. The magnet hospital concept identified attributes that supported the professional practice of nursing which, in turn increased nurse recruitment and retention. The objective of this study was to compare Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) perceptions of their innovativeness and leadership …
Facing The Leadership Challenges On Decommissioning United States Navy Ships, Darren J. Mcglynn Edd
Facing The Leadership Challenges On Decommissioning United States Navy Ships, Darren J. Mcglynn Edd
Dissertations
Since the late 1980s, hundreds of U.S. Navy ships have been decommissioned. Although ship decommissionings were postponed immediately after the September 11th attack, today the Navy is again engaged in “rightsizing” its force. Depending on the type of ship and its age, a ship faces different fates after the decommissioning process has been completed. Except on the rare occasion when a ship is turned into a museum, most decommissioned ships are disposed of in one of three ways. Some ships are sold to foreign navies to recoup some costs. Other ships are reassigned to the Military Sealift Command (MSC) to …

Entrepreneurial Initiatives At Public Liberal Arts And General Baccalaureate Colleges, Jack R. Kirby
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Until recent years, the concept of entrepreneurship has been the subject of study and application primarily in the private sector business community. However, in the wake of decreasing traditional sources of funding, higher operating costs, increasing government intervention, and institutional initiatives, entrepreneurship has gained increasing attention in public higher education (Elford & Hemstreet, 1996; Keast, 1995; Kozeracki, 1998).;This study examined the current patterns of entrepreneurial activities in public liberal arts and general baccalaureate colleges as defined by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education (The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, 2000). A survey instrument was prepared to …

Against the background of a rapidly changing business environment, the article examines the organisational change management behavior of the owner-managers of small and medium-sized enterprises in Singapore. The analysis of survey data is aimed at ascertain whether there are any differences between Chinese and English-educated small (Chinese) businessmen in terms of Change Management (CM), a dichotomy which is of great historical and politico-cultural significance in Singapore. The survey data show that there are indeed differences between the subgroups (e.g. with regard to the initiation of a more participatory people management style) but these variations turned out to be far less …
