Act Now For Your Tomorrow: Final Report Of The National Commission On Nursing Workforce For Long-Term Care, Edward Howard, Brian Biles, Robyn Stone, Paul Wing, Kristin Mccloskey, Tim M. Henderson

Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications

The nursing workforce shortage faced by long-term care providers stems from factors both outside and inside the organization and operation of long-term care services. The nursing shortage diminishes quality of care and increases the costs of providing services. Resolution of the long-term care nursing workforce challenge will require improvement of the recruitment and retention of nurses. The leadership for the efforts to improve the long-term care workforce must come from the community itself. New and sustained leadership for action by long-term care leaders is the critical factor necessary to the development of the recommended initiatives and the achievement of the …

Understanding The Decisions Of Trial Court Judges To Adopt A New Statewide Case Management System, James Hill Apr 2005

Understanding The Decisions Of Trial Court Judges To Adopt A New Statewide Case Management System, James Hill

Student Scholarship

This study analyzes the decisions of mid-level managers in an organization about whether or not to adopt a new information technology. Prior investigations of technology adoption have focused on firms or organization and the executives who lead them or end-users. They have largely ignored the people in the middle, the managers, who influence the executives and end-users and whose decisions help explain why the development and implementation of new technology falters or fails or succeeds. By contrast, this study uses a survey to explore the decisions of county-based trial court judges who have discretionary power to adopt or not adopt …

The Impact Of Ownership Structure On Wage Intensity In Japanese Corporations, Toru Yoshikawa, Phillip H. Phan, Parthiban David Apr 2005

The Impact Of Ownership Structure On Wage Intensity In Japanese Corporations, Toru Yoshikawa, Phillip H. Phan, Parthiban David

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The authors studied the effect of ownership structure on human capital investments as indicated by wage intensity, defined as the ratio of expenditure on employee wages to sales, in a sample of 996 Japanese manufacturing firms during their economic recession of 1998-2002. They found that domestic shareholders, with interests beyond financial considerations, enhance wage intensity, especially when performance is low, and thereby safeguard human capital investments. Foreign shareholders with sole interest in financial returns have an opposite effect; they reduce wage intensity when firm performance is low.

Is "Culture Clash" In A Merger Or Acquisition Well Modeled As A Managerial Prisoner's Dilemma?, Todd Creasey

Student Scholarship

Many mergers and acquisitions have proven successful due to their additional shareholder value creation, combined synergies in the research and development arena or improved consumer marketing of related products. This paper seeks to explain a primary cause of less successful mergers or acquisitions (M/A) through the prism of a multi-scale, iterative, Prisoner’s Dilemma taking place between department managers. The paper first presents the theory of the firm and its attempts to explain why companies merge and the sources of their subsequent success or failure brought on by M/A activity. Aspects of “Coping Theory,” “Resource (conservation) Theory,” and “Social Comparison Theory” …

A Systems Methodology For Measuring Operational Organization Effectiveness: A Study Of The Original Equipment Computer Manufacturing Industry, 1948 To 2001, Teddy Steven Cotter Apr 2005

A Systems Methodology For Measuring Operational Organization Effectiveness: A Study Of The Original Equipment Computer Manufacturing Industry, 1948 To 2001, Teddy Steven Cotter

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Optimizing operational organizational effectiveness is the central, although often unstated, goal of engineering management and systems engineering research and applications. Two fundamental problems remain to be addressed in pursuit of this goal. First, despite over fifty years of research in various disciplines, there is still no universally accepted definition of organizational effectiveness. Second, no methodology exists to identify the domains, dimensions, and determinants of operational organizational effectiveness and dynamically model operational organizational effectiveness within a given population.

This research synthesizes a systems engineering methodology for identifying the domains, dimensions, and determinants of and dynamically modeling operational organizational effectiveness for an …

The View From County Partners--Extension In Southwest Washington, Douglas M. Stienbarger Apr 2005

The View From County Partners--Extension In Southwest Washington, Douglas M. Stienbarger

Journal of Extension

Given increasing urbanization and economic transformation, how well does Extension serve its clientele? Using personal interviews, the study described here gauged the perceived accountability and relevance of Extension programs to county governments in southwest Washington State. The study has implications for other regions utilizing significant discretionary funding from county partners. County commissioners like Extension programming but express little ownership in programming often seen as antiquated. Commissioners do not see Extension meeting community needs and invest little time in the partnership. While closer alignment with county priorities will help improve the relationship with Extension, institutional constraints may also play an important …

Systematic Assessment Of Resistance To Extension Organizational Change: Evidence From The Alabama Cooperative Extension System, Rynetta R. Washington, Samuel R. Fowler Apr 2005

Systematic Assessment Of Resistance To Extension Organizational Change: Evidence From The Alabama Cooperative Extension System, Rynetta R. Washington, Samuel R. Fowler

Journal of Extension

This article provides a case-study example of how Extension administrators may help their organizations advance toward institutionalization of change and restructuring through systematic participation of agents and specialists in change assessments. Citing two change assessments in the Alabama Cooperative Extension System, this article offers a framework Extension administrators can adopt to decrease resistance to organizational changes. Action steps are discussed in terms of identifying specific changes resisted and embraced by Extension stakeholders. Though this participative approach does not guarantee complete acceptance of changes by organizational stakeholders, the approach can help evolving Extension organizations advance toward sound institutionalization of changes.
