The Porter Five-Forces Industry Analysis Framework For Religious Nonprofits: A Conceptual Analysis, Michael E. Cafferky Oct 2005

The Porter Five-Forces Industry Analysis Framework For Religious Nonprofits: A Conceptual Analysis, Michael E. Cafferky

Faculty Works

Goold (1997) has argued that the Porter (1980) five-forces framework for industry analysis is not applicable to nonprofits. In light of recent essays (e.g. Miller, 2002) as well as literature from the world of religious nonprofit organizations and organization theory, the Porter framework is analyzed through a review of representative literature. The religious nonprofit arena was chosen for this conceptual analysis based on an assumed key difference between religious nonprofits and for-profit firms: the stronger influence that mission has in strategy formulation compared with the influence of the external environment. Implications for further research are suggested.

Expectations, Challenges, And Frustrations: Faculty And Administrator Perceptions Of Quality And Assessment, Fred A. Koslowski Iii Oct 2005

Expectations, Challenges, And Frustrations: Faculty And Administrator Perceptions Of Quality And Assessment, Fred A. Koslowski Iii

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

The purpose of this study was not to evaluate the means or methods by which outcomes assessment and quality are being enacted in higher education, or take sides in the raging state and federal policy debate on institutional accountability and efficiency, but rather to describe the reactions, feelings, and perceptions of one particular institutions internal stakeholders to the increasingly shrill rhetoric on such topics. The present research sought to provide a voice for current faculty and administrators who will be responsible for implementing these renewed calls for assessing educational quality: specifically, their perceptions of the value, challenges, opportunities, and frustrations …

Psychological Influences On Referent Choice, Bonnie S. O'Neill, Mark A. Mone Oct 2005

Psychological Influences On Referent Choice, Bonnie S. O'Neill, Mark A. Mone

Management Faculty Research and Publications

This article discusses the psychological influences on referent selection. The nature of contemporary work environments, ones characterized by instability and uncertainty, may create increased needs on the part of individuals for comparative information. Individuals use social comparisons for managing both uncertainty and environmental change, and for making critical decisions about one's job. Most literature on referent selection can be categorized along two basic schema: identification of the types of referents that exist and examination of the outcomes that result from referent selection. Studies have identified a multitude of potential referents, primarily drawn from the outcomes being examined, including pay referents, …

May The Bun Be With You: An Annotated Bibliography Of Librarians And Their Image, David M. Salinero, Jill E. Grogg

The Southeastern Librarian

A very real tension exists between librarians’ attempts to alter their image(s) and the popular press’ and the public’s lingering preference for Marian the Librarian similes. As the Hot Picks @ Your Library calendar indicates, librarians take creative opportunities to dissuade the public of the “image of a dourfaced matron behind a forbidding desk” (Gillespie 2003, A01). But how do librarians attempt to frame their own discussion of the classic caricature? The authors wanted to know how librarians themselves have considered and researched the impact of the stereotype on the profession. What follows is a literature review of materials published …

Saint Vincent De Paul As A Leader Of Change: The Key Roles Of A Higher Purpose And Empowerment, Margaret Posig Ph.D. Oct 2005

Saint Vincent De Paul As A Leader Of Change: The Key Roles Of A Higher Purpose And Empowerment, Margaret Posig Ph.D.

Vincentian Studies

An examination of noteworthy change efforts enacted by Vincent de Paul underscores the importance of believing in the higher purpose of one’s goals. Empowered “followers” need to believe and find meaning in the “leader’s” vision, in order to buy into and support the change efforts. The empowerment of Louise de Marillac as a Vincentian leader was critical to the accomplishment of many great works. Organizations undergoing change or renewal can look to Vincent de Paul and Louise de Marillac for examples of servant leadership, and the change roles they enacted are integrated with a well-regarded organizational change model for the …

Military Model Of Leadership, Eddie M. Frizell Sep 2005

Military Model Of Leadership, Eddie M. Frizell

Theses and Graduate Projects

Military leadership has been tested and refined since the beginning of armed conflict. Society has entrusted its safety and welfare to a select few. These men and women of the Armed Forces have proven themselves worthy of this distinction.

A soldier has a very distinct view of his peers in the sister services. Researching the various armed services' leadership training programs, has given clear indication that they are more alike then different.

All services have based their leadership training on the same essential points: levels of leadership, values, attributes, skills, actions, human dimensions, stress, leadership styles, and consequences. These points …

The Global Supply Chain: Challenges And Solutions, Carol J. Johnson, Paul Nuzum Sep 2005

The Global Supply Chain: Challenges And Solutions, Carol J. Johnson, Paul Nuzum

Journal of Transportation Management

While there have been independent examinations of several of the changes that affect the supply chain, to date there has been little in the way of studies that holistically examine the changes facing front line supply chain managers today and the solutions they have implemented to address those changes. Supply chain executives have been interviewed in depth to better understand how manufacturing or distribution network changes, technology implementation, corporate re-structuring and/or increasing customer demands have been addressed in the field. An understanding of the challenges and successes faced by Global 1000 firms as they address these changes should help others …

Strategic Predictors Of Successful Enterprise Systems Deployment, John E. Ettlie, Victor J. Perotti, David A. Joseph, Mark Cotteleer

Management Faculty Research and Publications

Purpose The delivered wisdom to date has enterprise system purchase and implementation as one of the most hazardous projects any organization can undertake. The aim was to reduce this risk by both theoretically and empirically finding those key predictors of a successful enterprise system deployment.

Design/methodology/approach A representative sample of 60 firms drawn from the Fortune 1000 that had recently (1999-2000) adopted enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems was used to test a model of adoption performance with significant results.

Findings Leadership (social learning theory), business process re-engineering (change the company not the technology) and acquisition strategy (buy, do not make) …

Site-Based Management: A Review Of The Literature Part I: Setting The Stage, Terry-Ann Rodriguez, John R. Slate Sep 2005

Site-Based Management: A Review Of The Literature Part I: Setting The Stage, Terry-Ann Rodriguez, John R. Slate

Essays in Education

Americans have been rethinking and redesigning the way in which public schools should be most effectively operated through the process known as restructuring or systematic reform (Fiske, 1995). One of the most frequently used approaches to school reform is site-based management (SBM) (Mohrman, 1994). The major objective behind the site-based management approach is to move decision-making control from the central office of a school system to the local school level (i.e., at each school campus) (Short & Greer, 1997). Critical to the implementation of site-based management is the participation of school stakeholders (i.e., teachers, parents, administrators, staff, and community and …

Applying Qualitative Methods In Organizations: A Note For Industrial/Organizational Psychologists, Benjamin Osayawe Ehigie, Rebecca Ibhaguelo Ehigie Sep 2005

Applying Qualitative Methods In Organizations: A Note For Industrial/Organizational Psychologists, Benjamin Osayawe Ehigie, Rebecca Ibhaguelo Ehigie

The Qualitative Report

Early approach to research in industrial and organizational (I/O) psychology was oriented towards quantitative techniques as a result of influences from the social sciences. As the focus of I/O psychology expands from psychological test development to other personnel functions, there has been an inclusion of qualitative methods in I/O psychology practice. The present paper therefore examines how qualitative methods like observation, interviews, ethnography, focus group discussion, nominal group technique, Delphi method, and projective techniques can be used by I/O psychologists in organizational studies. It is believed that knowledge gained on the application s of these qualitative methods would enhance understanding …

Transformational Leadership Of Sales Managers And Job Satisfaction Of Sales Associates In The Fast Moving Consumer Goods Industry In Taiwan, Yu-Jia Hu

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

Literature review in sales content supported the theory that sales manager's transformational leadership has a vital influence on the job satisfaction of sales associates, while job satisfaction has significant influence on the sales associates' work behaviors. Very limited studies have extensively examined the relationship between sales managers' transformational leadership and sales associates' job satisfaction, while recent research has focused on how transformational leadership applies to sales management situations.

The purpose of this research is to examine the relationship between transformational leadership of sales managers and job satisfaction of sales associates in the Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) industry in Taiwan. …

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This study uses emerging meta-analytic methods, in combination with structural equations methodology, to synthesize empirical studies and extend the understanding of relationships amongthe correlates (antecedents and/or outcomes) of innovation in organizations. this study draws upon a meta-analytic database of 155 independent samples from 108 studies from the period of 1970 through 2004. Specifically, the study examines the impact of 26 determinants and 3 performance outcomes of innovation with an overall sample size of 229,395. Organizational resources account for the majority of unique variance explained in predicting innovation generation. Overall findings indicate that innovation is significantly and positively related to superior …

Evaluating The Effectiveness Of A Company's Online Health And Safety Training Program By Assessing Its Employees Perceptions And Knowledge., Jo Nell Maynard Mullins

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A cross-sectional study was conducted to evaluate a company’s online H & S training program. The ABC Company’s online 8-hr HAZWOPER refresher course is based on current OSHA standard topics required for certification and principles flexible to fit site- or task-specific situations and conditions.

An 18-question survey was used to evaluate employee perceptions of online training compared to traditional classroom training. Perceptions were compared by demographic variables (e.g. gender, position, race, age and longevity with the ABC Company), which suggested that only age had an influence on employee response. Fifty-five percent of the employees surveyed preferred online training as compared …

The Influence Of Demographic Information, Ethnic Identity, And Pro-Feminist Attitudes On Cognitive Empathy, Robbie J. Steward, Robin Powers, Hanik Jo Aug 2005

The Influence Of Demographic Information, Ethnic Identity, And Pro-Feminist Attitudes On Cognitive Empathy, Robbie J. Steward, Robin Powers, Hanik Jo

Michigan Journal of Counseling: Research, Theory and Practice

A critical overview of the literature provides a frame for the overall purpose of this empirical study, which examines the influence of ethnic identity and attitudes about women on individuals’ ability to engage in empathic thinking. Results of a hierarchical multiple regression analysis indicated that undergraduate students’ (n=179) ethnic identity and attitudes about women significantly contributed to 23% of the variance in the ability to think empathically. Among the three sets of independent variables (demographic information, attitudes about women, and ethnic identity subscales), ethnic identity was found to be the only significant (p < .01) contributor to the model, explaining 17% of the 23% variance in scores measuring ability to use empathy. Findings suggested that individuals who scored higher on the ethnic identity scale, particularly in relationship to the orientation to other groups, had a greater ability to think empathically, as indicated by higher scores on the empathy scale. Implications for training in counseling programs is discussed.
