Articles & Editorials

The Women In International Security (WIIS) and Georgetown University, in cooperation with the Strategic Studies Institute, U.S. Army War College, sponsored a conference, "Stabilization and Post-Conflict Operations: The Role of the Military," on November 17, 2004. Over 80 people participated in the conference conducted at Georgetown University. For areas of geographical emphasis, the conference sponsors selected the Middle East and Africa. The Middle East was an obvious choice, based on current interest in ongoing stability operations. Africa is recognized widely as a location with potential for similar activity, and the United States and Europe have invested effort in preparing African …

Becoming A Professional Engineering Educator: A New Role For A New Era, L. Dee Fink, Susan Ambrose, Daniel W. Wheeler Jan 2005

Becoming A Professional Engineering Educator: A New Role For A New Era, L. Dee Fink, Susan Ambrose, Daniel W. Wheeler

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Faculty Publications

Engineering education faces significant challenges as it seeks to meet the demands on the engineering profession in the twenty-first century. Engineering faculty will need to continue to learn new approaches to teaching and learning, which in turn will require effective professional development for both new and experienced instructors alike. This article explores approaches to effective professional development and provides a conceptual framework for responding to the challenge of becoming a professional engineering educator. The "cycle of professional practice" is introduced as a prelude for identifying what individual professors and their institutions can do to generate more powerful forms of engineering …

A Broad View Of Systems Analysis And Design, Steven Alter, Glenn J. Browne Jan 2005

A Broad View Of Systems Analysis And Design, Steven Alter, Glenn J. Browne

Business Analytics and Information Systems

This article presents a broad view of systems analysis and design (SA&D) research. Although SA&D is a critical area of research in the information systems field, relatively little such research has been published in leading IS journals. To point toward increased research opportunities for SA&D work, this article presents a framework that illustrates the broad range of activities within the SA&D area. This framework contrasts with narrower views that consider SA&D to be concerned primarily with software development. The framework positions SA&D activities in a two-dimensional space. We identify theoretical and practical research issues that apply across the full range …

Organizational Buffering: Managing Boundaries And Cores, Monty Lynn Jan 2005

Organizational Buffering: Managing Boundaries And Cores, Monty Lynn

Management Sciences

Organizations generally are more innovative, relevant, and responsive when they are exposed to market influences, yet they must regulate or limit the impact of outside influences to operate efficiently. This dynamic organization–environment tension has inspired the creation of several models of organizational buffering which delineate the systematic exposure and insulation of organizations from environmental uncertainty. We review three buffering paradigms — core, minimalist, and dispersed — and attempt to synthesize a model which weaves these perspectives together. The key to understanding functional and dysfunctional buffering lies with the organization’s requisite variety and continuous or discontinuous environmental change.

Mechanisms Of Growth Hormone Enhancement Of Excitatory Synaptic Transmission In Hippocampus, Ghada Saad Zaglool Ahmed Mahmoud Jan 2005

Mechanisms Of Growth Hormone Enhancement Of Excitatory Synaptic Transmission In Hippocampus, Ghada Saad Zaglool Ahmed Mahmoud

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Growth hormone (GH) deficiency is associated with impaired learning and memory. One possible target for GH effects on memory is the hippocampus, a brain region containing GH receptors (GHRs). To determine if GH acutely alters hippocampal function, recombinant human GH (rhGH) was applied to in vitro rat hippocampal brain slices. Extracellular recordings were used to assess effects of GH on the field EPSP (fEPSP) and long-term potentiation (LTP) of the fEPSP. GHR expression was measured in GH-treated and control rat hippocampal slices using RT-PCR. The GH signaling pathway was investigated by studying the effect of GH on the fEPSP after …

Deny The Consent To Be Governed: Risk Leadership Theory, Curtis Brungardt Ph.D., Chris Crawford Jan 2005

Deny The Consent To Be Governed: Risk Leadership Theory, Curtis Brungardt Ph.D., Chris Crawford

Journal of Business & Leadership: Research, Practice, and Teaching (2005-2012)

Denying the consent to be governed: Risk leadership theory takes a radical approach to leadership change, and organizational improvement. It departs from the traditional and contemporary views of leadership where the leader/power figures serve as the change agents for their organizations. Instead, most change agents are not the recognized leaders/power figures, but rather are the lower and middle level employees because power structures reassert stability and squash change when risk is felt. Organizational leaders, as well as lower and middle level employees, need to recognize the weaknesses of contemporary change models that are top-down and reinforce status quo quick fix …

Changes In Safety Attitudes In A Canadian Regional Airline Following A Merger, Dr. Mark Fleming, Bernadette Gatien, Captain Rob Vacher Jan 2005

Changes In Safety Attitudes In A Canadian Regional Airline Following A Merger, Dr. Mark Fleming, Bernadette Gatien, Captain Rob Vacher

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2005

The present study examines the impact a merger had on pilot safety attitudes. Pre and post merger safety attitudes among a sample of Canadian pilots were examined using the Flight Management Attitudes Questionnaire 2.1 (FMAQ) (Merritt, Helmreich, Wilhelm, & Sherman, 1996) and the Flight Management Attitudes and Safety Survey (FMASS) (Sexton, Wilhelm, Helmreich, Merritt, & Klinect, 2001). Data were collected from 232 airline pilots prior to a large-scale merger using the FMAQ 2.1. Approximately 1 year following the merger, FMASS data were collected from the newly merged organization. We hypothesized that pilots’ safety attitudes were negatively impacted due to uncertainty …

Panhandle Regional Health Information Exchange Plan, Agency For Healthcare Research And Quality

University of Nebraska Public Policy Center: Publications

The Plans describes the implementation process. The implementation process will take advantage of the Panhandle’s highly collaborative environment. Partners are aligning, and will be supported to align, their organizations for a change to electronic health information exchange. This collaboration will also enable us to reduce the total cost of ownership for partners who are implementing electronic health records in their entities. We will capitalize on “enterprise architectures” (across all partners) whenever feasible and will create centralized IT functions to support implementation. The process will focus on adopting national standards and creating local policies and protocols to facilitate useable health information …

An Interdisciplinary Comparison Of Master's Thesis Abstracts, Patricia Belle Chance Jan 2005

An Interdisciplinary Comparison Of Master's Thesis Abstracts, Patricia Belle Chance

Theses Digitization Project

Explores different ways that organizational moves and other discourse elements such as hedging are reflected in graduate student research abstracts for theses, dissertations and research articles. Master's thesis abstracts from five disciplines at California State University, San Bernardino were analyzed. Rhetorical conventions in these texts that reflect the epistemological and social expectations of the writers' academic communities were explored. Results indicate that these abstracts use a variety of hedging patterns and many of the moves that have been described for published research articles.

Reducing Non-Urgent Utilization Of The Emergency Department By Self-Pay Patients: Analysis Of The Impact Of A Community-Wide Provider Network, Karen Karen Van Caulil Jan 2005

Reducing Non-Urgent Utilization Of The Emergency Department By Self-Pay Patients: Analysis Of The Impact Of A Community-Wide Provider Network, Karen Karen Van Caulil

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine whether a coordinated and comprehensive system of care for the uninsured changed the behavior of the uninsured by decreasing non-urgent utilization of the emergency departments within a large, urban county. The literature on emergency department trends and interventions designed to decrease "inappropriate" or non-urgent use of the emergency departments was reviewed and links to relevant theoretical concepts were identified. Utilization data from six emergency departments and six federally qualified health centers were evaluated. Secondary data over a three-year time period were abstracted from patient and organizational records at the hospitals and federally …

Providing Effective Counseling To Substance Abusers Through The Use Of Biopsychosocialspiritual Strategies, Rachel Phillips Jan 2005

Providing Effective Counseling To Substance Abusers Through The Use Of Biopsychosocialspiritual Strategies, Rachel Phillips

Graduate Research Papers

The field of substance abuse has had a history of relapse. Both In-Patient and Out-Patient Treatment facilities have experienced the "revolving door" effect (Walton, Blow, and Booth, 2001). D.R. Laws found in research he conducted that 80% of the patients treated, relapsed 12 months after treatment and two-thirds of the relapses were within 90 days of treatment (Laws, 1999). The federal government has begun questioning the validity of these programs in light of skyrocketing costs for substance abuse treatment (Craig, 2004). Clinicians have begun to examine the cost effectiveness of their current treatment modalities. This paper will provide an overview …

Tracking The “State Of The Animals”: Challenges And Opportunities In Assessing Change, Randall Lockwood

State of the Animals 2005

In this chapter we:

  1. Review some of the measures that have been used in the past to attempt to assess the state of the animals and the extent to which we can continue to apply these measures to track future changes.
  2. Review some of the emerging tools and developing technologies that can improve our tracking of the state of the animals and provide some quantitative measures of our progress.
  3. Explore some examples of general measures of human interaction with animals that might prove useful in predicting and tracking changes in how they are treated.

Third Cybernetic Revolution: Beyond Open To Dialogic System Theories, Khadija Al Arkoubi Jan 2005

Third Cybernetic Revolution: Beyond Open To Dialogic System Theories, Khadija Al Arkoubi

Management Faculty Publications

We question Systems Theory by adopting a Bakhtinian dialogism approach. We argue that a dialogism approach gets us beyond first order cybernetic (control) and second order (open) system thinking to a third order cybernetics (multi- dialogisms). We believe third order cybernetic theory is an extension of Bakhtin's work. We explore how dialogue is not equivalent to polyphonic dialogism; the later does not assume being in same time and space, as in some meeting. Further, we look at three other dialogisms (stylistic, chronotopic, & architectonic). Multi- dialogisms raise questions for dialog, learning, and appreciative inquiry approaches. We conclude with insights on …

Reaching Out: Alumni Outreach For The Rueckert-Hartman School For Health Professions, Mary Catherine Lumpp

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

The Regis University Alumni and Parent Relations Department reaches out to generations of former students, and with University growth the challenge of this continually increases. Ways the Department can enhance support to graduates of the Rueckert-Hartman School for Health Professions (RHSHP) were explored through varied media. The action research included interviews, an alumni survey, consultation with sister Jesuit schools, and review of secondary literature specific to the topic of alumni associations and organizational change. Results suggest that the Alumni and Parent Relations Department must openly communicate with the leadership of RHSHP in order to succeed in supporting the unique needs …

Behavioral Factors In Strategic Alliances, Purnendu Mandal, Dale H. Shao, Chong W. Kim Jan 2005

Behavioral Factors In Strategic Alliances, Purnendu Mandal, Dale H. Shao, Chong W. Kim

Management Faculty Research

Recently, there has been a growing trend among information technology (IT) organizations to form strategic alliances to increase competitive advantages in the marketplace. For an organization to exploit the benefits of alliances, human factors and IT factors must be among the basic components of any strategic plan (Kemeny & Yanowitz, 2000). Despite the obvious need to consider human and IT factors when developing a long-term plan, many strategic plans developed in the past that led to alliances have failed to consider human aspects. Examples of failure in the implementation of IT systems due to the lack of consideration of human …

Best Practices For Customer Resource Management (Crm), Richard Poirier Jan 2005

Best Practices For Customer Resource Management (Crm), Richard Poirier

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

This thesis will help to define the best practices for implementing a CRM (Customer Resource Management) system in corporate enterprises. The notion that CRM is just an Information Technology Software Application is shortsighted. CRM is a more global design incorporating vendors, supply chains, enterprises, and customers. In presenting this dissertation, I follow proven and respected processes in order to set a foundation that is necessary for a structured research framework to identify best practices in CRM systems.
