Acculturation To Western Society As A Risk Factor For High Blood Pressure: A Meta-Analytic Review, Timothy B. Smith, Patrick R. Steffen, Michael Larson, Leon Butler Jun 2005

Acculturation To Western Society As A Risk Factor For High Blood Pressure: A Meta-Analytic Review, Timothy B. Smith, Patrick R. Steffen, Michael Larson, Leon Butler

Faculty Publications

Objective: A number of studies have documented that acculturation to Western society is related to an increase in blood pressure. Although there is evidence that higher socioeconomic status appears related to better cardiovascular health, increasing acculturation to Western society appears related to worse cardiovascular health. The purpose of this meta-analysis was to investigate the association between acculturation and blood pressure.

Method: Literature searches yielded 125 relevant research manuscripts, which were coded by teams of two independent raters. Measures of association (effect sizes) were extracted for both systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) readings. Random effects models were …

High-Throughput Immunoblotting Identifies Biotin-Dependent Signaling Proteins In Hepg2 Hepatocarcinoma Cells1, Rocio Rodriguez-Melendez, Jacob B. Griffin, Gautam Sarath, Janos Zempleni Jun 2005

High-Throughput Immunoblotting Identifies Biotin-Dependent Signaling Proteins In Hepg2 Hepatocarcinoma Cells1, Rocio Rodriguez-Melendez, Jacob B. Griffin, Gautam Sarath, Janos Zempleni

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Biotin affects the abundance of mRNA coding for ~10% of genes expressed in human-derived hepatocarcinoma (HepG2) cells. Here, we determined whether effects of biotin on gene expression are associated with changes in the abundance of distinct proteins in cell signaling and structure. HepG2 cells were cultured in media containing the following concentrations of biotin: 0.025 nmol/L (denoted “deficient”), 0.25 nmol/L (“physiological” = control), and 10 nmol/L (“pharmacological”) for 10 d before harvesting. The abundance of 1009 proteins from whole-cell extracts was quantified by using high-throughput immunoblots. The abundance of 44 proteins changed by at least 25% in biotin-deficient and biotin-supplemented …

Project Child Health Impact Assessment, Unyi Agba, Kristina Chung, David Diehl, Marisol Olivera, Yolanda Perez

Emerging Leaders Program Team Projects

The 2005 Project Child Health Impact Assessment (CHIA) at the Boston Medical Center (BMC) for the UMass Emerging Leaders Program (ELP) is closely related to one that members of the 2004 ELP cohort assisted with. The 2004 project team provided BMC with preliminary research regarding similar concepts in Europe, Canada and the United States. With this research in hand, the Project CHIA team at BMC decided to research, develop, write and publish pilot analyses that illustrated the impact of public policy on children's health. The 2005 ELP team was asked to provide guidance regarding a communications strategy for these pilot …

Effects Of Grain Legumes And Cover Crops On Maize Yield And Plant Damage By Busseola Fusca (Fuller) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) In The Humid Forest Of Southern Cameroon, A. Chabi-Olaye, C. Nolte, F. Schulthess, C. Borgemeister Jun 2005

Borgemeister

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Field trials were run in the humid forest zone of Cameroon to investigate the effects of crop rotation, cover crops and bush fallow on infestations by the noctuid stemborer Busseola fusca (Fuller) and on yield of maize. A continuous maize production system was compared with crop sequence systems, in which maize followed a grain legume (cowpea, soybean), cover crop (mucuna, pigeon pea) or a bush fallow. Compared to the continuous maize cropping system, maize in the crop sequence with legume and fallow systems had significantly higher leaf and stem nitrogen content at 35 and 63 days after planting (DAP), respectively. …

Dying In America - An Examination Of Policies That Deter Adequate End-Of-Life Care In Nursing Homes, Diane E. Hoffmann, Anita J. Tarzian Jun 2005

Dying In America - An Examination Of Policies That Deter Adequate End-Of-Life Care In Nursing Homes, Diane E. Hoffmann, Anita J. Tarzian

Faculty Scholarship

This article examines current health care policies and government practices that deter appropriate end-of-life care, focusing on the use of hospice services for dying nursing home patients. The authors conclude that hospice and nursing home regulations, reimbursement for hospice and nursing homes, and enforcement of the fraud and abuse rules collude to “chill” utilization of hospice by nursing homes and result in inadequate end-of-life care for many nursing home patients. They argue that these policies and practices have at their roots a number of questionable assumptions and call for a shift in existing paradigms affecting care to this group and …

Culture Brokering: A Case Study Resolving Conflict In A Health Care Setting, Katherine A. Baumgartner Jun 2005

Culture Brokering: A Case Study Resolving Conflict In A Health Care Setting, Katherine A. Baumgartner

Theses and Graduate Projects

This paper describes the application of a culture brokering model developed by Mary Ann Jezewski to a cultural conflict within a pediatric clinic. The purpose of the case study was to explore the usefulness of the culture brokering model as a tool in resolving conflict as well as a process to expand cross-cultural understanding and promote connectedness of the patient in the health care system. A practice model for the advanced practice nurse is discussed which combines the cultural brokering model and places it within the framework of Leininger's Theory of Culture Care Diversity and Universality. The cultural conflict in …

It's Not The Thought That Counts, Deborah S. Hellman Jun 2005

It's Not The Thought That Counts, Deborah S. Hellman

ExpressO

The article considers a central question about discrimination – are an actor’s intentions relevant to whether an action wrongfully discriminates – and takes issue with a familiar answer to this question. If one thinks of “discrimination” in its literal sense, as simply drawing distinctions among people on the basis of possessing or lacking some trait, it becomes clear that discrimination is ubiquitous and often benign. The challenge is to distinguish when discrimination is permissible and when it is not. One common answer to this question is that it is the intentions of the actor who adopts or enacts a law, …
