Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
Some muscles from the different populations of cows evaluated have similar chemical and physical properties to muscles from A-maturity, USDA Select grade cattle. Perhaps those muscles from cows could be utilized in a manner that would increase their value. Fifteen carcasses were selected from five populations (fed beef cows, non-fed beef cows, fed dairy cows, non-fed dairy cows, and Select grade beef) and nine muscles per carcass were characterized. Most muscles from cows were darker in color, had higher pH values, and had greater heme iron content than muscles from younger cattle, which may be undesirable to consumers. Supplemental technology …

One grazing and two feeding experiments were conducted to compare the feeding value of corn residue or corn grain from a genetically enhanced corn hybrid (corn rootworm-protected; event MON 863) with nontransgenic, commercially available, reference hybrids. In Exp. 1, two 13.7-ha fields, containing corn residues from either a genetically enhanced corn rootworm- protected hybrid (MON 863), or a near-isogenic, nontransgenic control hybrid (CON) were divided into four equal-sized paddocks. Sixty-four steer calves (262 ± 15 kg) were stratified by BW and assigned randomly to paddock to achieve a stocking rate of 0.43 ha/steer for 60 d, with eight steers per …

Utilization Of Corn Co-Products In The Beef Industry, Galen E. Erickson, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Don C. Adams, Richard J. Rasby
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Corn milling co-products are expected to increase dramatically in supply. Two primary types of milling processes currently exist, resulting in quite different feed products. The dry milling process produces distillers grains plus solubles, and the wet milling process produces corn gluten feed. These feeds can be marketed as wet feed, or they can be dried and marketed as either dry corn gluten feed or dry distillers grains with or without solubles. For the purposes of this article, only wet corn gluten feed (WCGF) and wet distillers grains plus solubles (WDGS) will be discussed. The majority of plant expansions are dry …

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
A 3-yr experiment was conducted with cows and their calves to evaluate resource inputs, animal performance, and carcass characteristics of two production systems. In the control system, cows (CON; n = 99/yr) grazed pasture and were fed hay during the winter, and CON steer calves were finished in the feedlot for 211 d after weaning. In the treatment system (TRT; n = 100/yr), cows grazed pasture and crop residue during the winter and were fed hay. Treatment steer calves grazed crop residue after weaning, grazed pasture in the spring and summer, and were finished in the feedlot for 90 d. …

Report To Congress From Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales On U.S. Government Efforts To Combat Trafficking In Persons In Fiscal Year 2004, U. S. Department Of Justice
Human Trafficking: Data and Documents
Trafficking in persons is a regrettably widespread form of modern-day slavery. An estimated 600,000 to 800,000 human beings are trafficked across international borders each year. Furthermore, between 14,500 and 17,500 victims are trafficked into the United States each year. In response, the United States has led the world in the fight against this terrible crime.

2005 Trafficking In Persons Report, U.S. Department Of State
Human Trafficking: Data and Documents
The Department of State is required by law to submit a report each year to the U.S. Congress on foreign governments’ efforts to eliminate severe forms of trafficking in persons. This Report is the fifth annual TIP Report.
This Report is intended to raise global awareness and spur foreign governments to take effective actions to counter all forms of trafficking in persons — a form of modern-day slavery. The Report has increasingly focused the efforts of a growing community of nations to share information and to partner in new and important ways to fight human trafficking. A country that fails …

Ec05-473 Functional Foods, Theresa Herring, Julie A. Albrecht
Ec05-473 Functional Foods, Theresa Herring, Julie A. Albrecht
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Just as consumers grew weary of hearing about the bombardment of foods that contain unhealthy, disease-causing components, researchers and nutrition educators have shifted their focus to the study and promotion of functional foods. Foods that have physiologically active components, which can improve one's health and prevent disease beyond that of one's essential daily nutritional requirements, are called functional foods.
This Extension Circular defines functional foods. It reviews food label rules for functional foods, their physiologically active components, and their specific health benefits. Examples are provided of the advantages of whole food consumption compared to one isolated component. Key definitions are …

Nf05-624 Omega-3 Fatty Acids, Jennifer Larsen, Linda S. Boeckner
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Fats in our food are categorized according to the predominant fatty acid that is present. Typically fats are categorized as saturafed fatty acids or unsaturated fatty acids. Some examples of foods that are high in saturated fats are butter and lard. These fats are solid at room temperature. Fats that are high in unsaturated fatty acids are liquid at room temperature. Examples are vegetable oils such as canola, corn, olive or soybean.
This NebFacts discusses the benefits of Omega-3 fatty acids, supplements, how much is enough and the cautions on eating certain fish.
Estimating Drc-1339 Mortality Using Bioenergetics: A Case Study Of European Starlings, H. Jeffrey Homan, Randal S. Stahl, John Johnston, George M. Linz
Estimating Drc-1339 Mortality Using Bioenergetics: A Case Study Of European Starlings, H. Jeffrey Homan, Randal S. Stahl, John Johnston, George M. Linz
Wildlife Damage Management Conference Proceedings
We developed a bioenergetics model for European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) that estimated mortality from baitings with CU Bird Carrier pellets treated with 1% DRC-1339 Concentrate and diluted 5:1 (untreated:treated pellets). A bioenergetic analysis of heat and radiative energy exchanges between the starling body surface and surrounding environment was converted to daily caloric demand based on a steady-state energy balance. The amount of Bird Carrier eaten per starling was governed by subroutines in the model that used probability distributions to simulate variability in dietary intake at the bait site. Mortality was estimated through dose-response regression analysis. Compared to onsite …
Deer-Vehicle Crash Patterns Across Ecoregions In Michigan, Krishnan Sudharsan, Shawn Riley, Brent Riley, Brian Maurer
Deer-Vehicle Crash Patterns Across Ecoregions In Michigan, Krishnan Sudharsan, Shawn Riley, Brent Riley, Brian Maurer
Wildlife Damage Management Conference Proceedings
Deer-vehicle collisions (DVCs) impact the economic and social well being of humans. We examined large-scale patterns behind DVCs across 3 ecoregions: Southern Lower Peninsula (SLP), Northern Lower Peninsula (NLP), and Upper Peninsula (UP) in Michigan. A 3 component conceptual model of DVCs with drivers, deer, and a landscape was the framework of analysis. The conceptual model was parameterized into a parsimonious mathematical model. The dependent variable was DVCs by county by ecoregion and the independent variables were percent forest cover, percent crop cover, mean annual vehicle miles traveled (VMT), and mean deer density index (DDI) by county. A discriminant function …

Helping End-Users “Engineer” Dependable Web Applications, Sebastian Elbaum, Kalyan-Ram Chilakamarri, Bhuvana Gopal, Gregg Rothermel
School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers
End-user programmers are increasingly relying on web authoring environments to create web applications. Although often consisting primarily of web pages, such applications are increasingly going further, harnessing the content available on the web through “programs” that query other web applications for information to drive other tasks. Unfortunately, errors can be pervasive in web applications, impacting their dependability. This paper reports the results of an exploratory study of end-user web application developers, performed with the aim of exposing prevalent classes of errors. The results suggest that end-users struggle the most with the identification and manipulation of variables when structuring requests to …
G05-1587 Understandng Effective Fiber In Rations For Dairy Cattle, Paul J. Kononoff
G05-1587 Understandng Effective Fiber In Rations For Dairy Cattle, Paul J. Kononoff
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Fiber type, quality and length are key to herd health and production.
Fiber is a key component in dairy rations. When nutritionists are faced with herd challenges such as low milkfat tests, foot problems, or low feed conversions, ration fiber often is evaluated. Effective fiber depends on the type and amount of forages and nonforage fiber sources being fed, the particle size of those forages and the amount of available nonfiberous carbohydrates included in the diet.
The Relationship Between Body Image And Weight Maintenance In Community Women Enrolled In Weight-Loss Programs, Amy S. Collings
The Relationship Between Body Image And Weight Maintenance In Community Women Enrolled In Weight-Loss Programs, Amy S. Collings
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Research suggests that poor body image, low self-esteem, and depression may be associated with failure to maintain weight loss (Lean, 2000). However, definitive results are lacking, necessitating further research. Both successful and unsuccessful weight maintainers (N = 148) were recruited from weight-loss programs. Self-report measures on dimensions of body image, depression, and self-esteem were administered at baseline and a three-month follow-up. Results suggest that those with early-onset obesity have more body image dissatisfaction than those with late-onset obesity, which appears to be due to BMI differences between groups with the former having a higher BMI than the later. Other results …

Neotrusteeship In Afghanistan, Melanie Kawano
Neotrusteeship In Afghanistan, Melanie Kawano
Human Rights & Human Welfare
Afghanistan is currently under the tentative rule of an international administration, or neotrusteeship, thereby restricting its national sovereignty. However, self-determination and nonintervention have never been persistent features of Afghanistan. Foreign interventions, invasions and great power showdowns on its territory have made a truly autonomous Afghan state a shortlived phenomenon. The outcome at each stage of Afghan history has been an unstable state that seems to invite even more external involvement.
State-Building In Afghanistan, Melanie Kawano, Amy Mcguire
State-Building In Afghanistan, Melanie Kawano, Amy Mcguire
Human Rights & Human Welfare
Since the U.S. intervention in Afghanistan in late 2001, Afghan citizens and members of the global community have been grappling with the question of how to build a state that can fill the void created by decades of conflict and violence. However, the concept of “state-building” is complex. The term describes both an internal process and international assistance; it requires short-term action as well as a long-term vision. While no precise formula for state-building exists, there are historical precedents and “models” of state-building expressed by great powers and multilaterals. In reality, however, these are based on best guesses that fail …

A Comparison Study Between Writing On Handheld Computers And Pencil -Paper In The Elementary Classroom, Ling-Chin Ko
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to compare the difference in writing effort associated with two methods, pencil and paper and handheld computers in the third grade classroom. The methods were compared in terms of the quality of the stories written, and the length of the stories in number of words, and time on task during writing of the stories. Three hypotheses were defined to identify the effect of writing efforts associated with the two methods, two classes and the effect on the interaction between the methods and the class. All three hypotheses were analyzed with a two-way MANOVA test. …
