Characterization Of The Major Extrapallial Fluid Protein Of The Mollusc, Mytilus Edulis: Implications For Function, Yan Yin Jan 2005

Characterization Of The Major Extrapallial Fluid Protein Of The Mollusc, Mytilus Edulis: Implications For Function, Yan Yin

Doctoral Dissertations

The major protein component of the extrapallial (EP) fluid of the mollusc Mytilus edulis, named the EP protein, has been previously isolated and partially characterized. It has been proposed to play an important role in shell mineralization because of its intriguing property of Ca2+ -binding induced self-assembly.

This dissertation reports on the characterization of the primary structure of the EP protein by RT-PCR and cDNA sequencing methods. The EP protein is comprised of 213 amino acids post cleavage of a signal peptide of 23 amino acids, and is rich in His, Glu and Asp residues. The consensus site of N-glycosylation …

On The Neuroendocrine Regulation Of Reproduction: Functional Characterization And Kinetic Studies Of The Lamprey Gonadotropin -Releasing Hormone Receptor And Cloning And Analysis Of The Cdna Encoding Lamprey Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone-Iii, Matthew Ren Silver

Doctoral Dissertations

The vertebrate hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis is regulated by gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), a decapeptide that is produced and released from the hypothalamus. At the anterior pituitary, GnRH action is mediated through high affinity binding with the GnRH receptor, a rhodopsin-like seven transmembrane G-protein coupled receptor (GPCR). Interest in the evolution of reproductive physiology has led scientists to study the lamprey, a member of the oldest extant class of vertebrates, the agnathans. The studies presented herein contribute to the field of reproductive neuroendocrinology through developing our understanding of ancestral, or ancestral-like characteristics and mechanisms of the HPG axis. This dissertation is divided …

Man['S Best Friend] Does Not Live By Bread Alone: Imposing A Duty To Provide Veterinary Care, Phyllis Coleman Jan 2005

Man['S Best Friend] Does Not Live By Bread Alone: Imposing A Duty To Provide Veterinary Care, Phyllis Coleman

Animal Law Review

Although all states outlaw cruelty to companion animals, most jurisdictions only prohibit causing unnecessary suffering as well as failure to provide food, water, and shelter. They do not address whether owners must obtain veterinary care. Even the few statutes that mention such treatment do not define exactly what kind and how much is required. This article highlights the deficiencies in these laws. It argues that keeping pets creates an obligation to get them medical treatment when they are sick or injured and also explains why such a duty is necessary. In addition, it proposes uniform legislation that creates an explicit …

Facts From A Year Of Drought: Forage Competition Between Livestock And The Mongolian Pika (Ochotona Pallasi) And Its Effects On Livestock Densities And Body Condition, Vroni Retzer Jan 2005

Facts From A Year Of Drought: Forage Competition Between Livestock And The Mongolian Pika (Ochotona Pallasi) And Its Effects On Livestock Densities And Body Condition, Vroni Retzer

Erforschung biologischer Ressourcen der Mongolei / Exploration into the Biological Resources of Mongolia, ISSN 0440-1298

Burrowing small mammals in grasslands have long been regarded as pests because they compete for forage with livestock and reduce the forage availability for livestock by destroying pastures through their intensive digging activity.

In order to investigate forage competition between the Mongolian Pika (Ochotona pallasi) and livestock an exclosure experiment consisting of four different treatments was set up. The treatments were: 1) accessible only for pikas, (only pika) 2) accessible only for livestock, (only livestock) 3) accessible for both herbivore groups (pika & livestock) and 4) no grazing (no grazing). During the investigation period all requirements for forage …

Book Review: Feasting And Fasting With Lewis & Clark: A Food And Social History Of The Early 1800s, Barbara G. Shortridge Jan 2005

Book Review: Feasting And Fasting With Lewis & Clark: A Food And Social History Of The Early 1800s, Barbara G. Shortridge

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

This volume is an intriguing combination of narrative and reference material. A first section sets the historical context for the famous voyage of discovery by discussing such topics as contemporary food preservation, outdoor cooking, and knowledge about nutrition and food safety. Then a longer second section chronologically details the food events of the journey, beginning with shopping in Philadelphia. Here the author gives attention not only to obvious topics such as food and beverage provisioning, indigenous flora and fauna food sources, and the diplomatic aspects of eating together with Native Americans, but also much about illness, starvation, and shortage of …

Book Review: The Food Journal Of Lewis And Clark: Recipes For An Expedition, Mary Wallace Kelsey Jan 2005

Book Review: The Food Journal Of Lewis And Clark: Recipes For An Expedition, Mary Wallace Kelsey

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

This well-designed and appealing book, combining history with usable recipes reminiscent of the times and places the expedition traveled, looks as though it might have been published early in the nineteenth century. Gunderson uses the term "paleocusineology," which she defines as bringing history alive through cooking. If one merely thumbs through the volume, finding recipes for ice cream and lemon meringue pie can be a bit startling. Obviously, these foods could not have been prepared in the wilderness. Reading, however, tells us that the story begins with the employment of Meriwether Lewis as President Thomas Jefferson's private secretary in 1801 …

Caregiver Interventions For Behavioral Symptoms In Alzheimer's And Dementia Patients, Heather M. Lindner Jan 2005

Caregiver Interventions For Behavioral Symptoms In Alzheimer's And Dementia Patients, Heather M. Lindner

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

As people are living longer, the incidence of Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia is rising dramatically. While preventative and treatment methods are being developed for these complicated disorders, attention also has been directed towards caregivers, because they play a vital role in the way the patients’ symptoms are handled and how well the patients adjust overall. Caregivers are almost always family members who lack formal training in caring for dementia patients. The purpose of this research was to see whether caregivers who follow interventions suggested in the literature experience fewer or less intense behavioral problems on the part …

Group Judgments: Statistical Means, Deliberation, And Information Markets, Cass R. Sunstein Jan 2005

Group Judgments: Statistical Means, Deliberation, And Information Markets, Cass R. Sunstein

Articles

How can groups elicit and aggregate the information held by their individual members? There are three possibilities. Groups might use the statistical mean of individual judgments; they might encourage deliberation; or they might use information markets. In both private and public institutions, deliberation is the standard way of proceeding; but for two reasons, deliberating groups often fail to make good decisions. First, the statements and acts of some group members convey relevant information, and that information often leads other people not to disclose what they know. Second, social pressures, imposed by some group members, often lead other group members to …

Clinical Review Of Pediatric Epilepsy, Mohammed M. Jan Jan 2005

Clinical Review Of Pediatric Epilepsy, Mohammed M. Jan

Neurosciences

Seizure disorders are very common and represent the most common cause of referrals to pediatric neurology. Epilepsy, defined as recurrent unprovoked seizures, is also common with a frequency of 4-8 cases per 1000 children. In Saudi Arabia, inherited neurological disorders, including epilepsy and genetic epilepsy syndromes, are more common because of the high rate of consanguinity. This article attempts to provide an updated overview of pediatric epilepsy and review the most recent diagnostic and therapeutic guidelines. Seizures in children have wide variations in clinical expression with age specific presentation. Although epilepsy is a clinical diagnosis, EEG often provides supportive evidence …

Anorexia Nervosa. Emphasis On Its Medical Complications, Abdulhameed A. Al-Habeeb, Naseem A. Qureshi Jan 2005

Anorexia Nervosa. Emphasis On Its Medical Complications, Abdulhameed A. Al-Habeeb, Naseem A. Qureshi

Neurosciences

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a well-recognized heterogeneous psychiatric disorder, associated with high morbidity and mortality with several medical complications. Besides a brief review, this paper also reports on a single female patient with AN. Eating disorders are reported to be slightly more common among western cultures, but developing countries are not immune to eating disorders. This patient showed both the psychopathology of abnormal eating behavior and serious physical complications and despite all possible treatment interventions, she ultimately died. We discuss different aspects of AN including the importance of constant social support from key relatives.

Is There A Perfect Diet? A Comparison Between The Atkins, South Beach, And Metabolic Typing Diets., Neil Habgood

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

This thesis will seek to answer the often perplexing question: "How should I eat in order to lose weight and feel better?" Is your goal to lose 10 pounds? Is your goal to lose 100 pounds? Or is your goal simply to live a healthy, pain-free lifestyle? In this paper I will examine two of the most popular diets today, The South Beach Diet and the Atkins Diet. I will compare these two diets to another diet known as The Metabolic Typing Diet. I will also explore the psychological impact of positive thinking and goals setting. Ultimately, I will be …

From "Predominance" To "Resolvability": A New Approach To Regulating Class Actions, Allan Erbsen Jan 2005

From "Predominance" To "Resolvability": A New Approach To Regulating Class Actions, Allan Erbsen

Articles

This Article develops normative and doctrinal innovations to cope with a pivotal yet undertheorized question in most proposed class actions: assuming that a class has adequate representatives, how much variance among class members' circumstances should courts tolerate? Class actions seeking monetary damages would be much less controversial if all class members were identically situated. In an imagined world of perfect homogeneity, shifting from an individualized to an aggregative mode of adjudication would promote efficiency, mitigate collective action problems, and counterbalance defendants' inherent economies-of-scale without sacrificing accuracy or redistributing entitlements among class members. In the real world, however, most classes encompass …
