The Effects Of Dried Distillers Grains On Heifers Consuming Low Or High Quality Forage, Sarah Morris, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Don C. Adams, Galen E. Erickson, Kyle J. Vander Pol Jan 2005

The Effects Of Dried Distillers Grains On Heifers Consuming Low Or High Quality Forage, Sarah Morris, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Don C. Adams, Galen E. Erickson, Kyle J. Vander Pol

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

Two forage sources, high and low quality, were used to evaluate effects of five levels of dried distillers grains on forage intake. Ninety heifer calves were fed high or low quality forage, supplemented with 0, 1.5, 3, 4.5, or 6 lb DM dried distillers grains. Forage intakes linearly decreased as dried distillers grains increased. Average daily gain increased linearly with increased dried distillers grains indicating that dried distillers grains can be a protein and energy supplement source and a substitute for forage. Dried distillers grains are an economical supplement to cattle on either high or low quality forage diets.

Effects Of Supplemental Protein During Gestation And Grazing Sub-Irrigated Meadow During The Postpartum Interval On Pregnancy Rates Of Spring Calving Cows And Calf Growth, Leslie Aaron Stalker, Don C. Adams, Terry J. Klopfenstein Jan 2005

Klopfenstein

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

A two year experiment evaluated the influence of supplemental protein during the last trimester of gestation and grazing sub-irrigated meadow during the postpartum interval on pregnancy rates and calf growth in a March calving production system. Supplemental protein during the last trimester did not improve subsequent pregnancy rate but resulted in increased carcass weight. Allowing cows to graze sub-irrigated meadow during the postpartum interval improved pregnancy rates but did not change steer performance in the feedlot. Feeding supplemental protein during the last trimester of gestation and allowing cows to graze sub-irrigated meadow were both economical methods of improving production.

The Effect Of Age And Diet On Immune Function In Felines, Lindsay Fitz Hendey Jan 2005

The Effect Of Age And Diet On Immune Function In Felines, Lindsay Fitz Hendey

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Aging is associated with several physiological changes. An important physiological change seen in aging is a shift in the balance between oxidants and antioxidants, in which increased oxidants, or free radicals, seen with aging lead to increased cellular damage, also called oxidative stress. Immune function of elderly individuals seems to be significantly impacted through a decline of immunologic function as well as dysregulation of inflammatory and specific immune responses. Oxidative stress and the accumulation of free radicals have been implicated in the decline of immune function seen in the aged. Antioxidants, both intracellular and exogenous, counteract free radical damage to …

Molybdenum Adsorption On Iron Oxides Lead-Succimer Compounds In Chelation Therapy, Jacob Naeger

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

For this research opportunity, two different projects were performed. Much time and effort was put into each project both over the summer of 2004, the winter semester 2004, and spring 2005. Various challenges were present with each experiment. lbese challenges did not prevent learning and research success, however. lbrough the work, much knowledge was discovered despite numerous unfortunate setbacks. This paper chronicles the results from each experiment. In each proceeding section, two subsections indicate discussion and results from each individual experiment.

Graduate Public Health Education In Africa: An Innovative Distance-Learning Model, Emmanuel Rudatsikira, Patricia Johnston, Richard Hart

International Journal of Global Health and Health Disparities

This article describes the development and implementation of a distance graduate public health education program in Africa by Loma Linda University, Loma Linda, California, U.S.A. The program started in March 2000 and ended in September 2003 with formal teaching sessions on-site held twice a year at the University of Eastern Africa, Kenya. The instruction was given in English and French. Of the cohort of 67 students from 20 African countries who started the program, 57 received an M.P.H. degree and six received a certificate in public health. The experiential learning model allowed students to immediately put into practice what they …

The Death Of The Living Will, Carl E. Schneider, Angela Fagerlin Jan 2005

The Death Of The Living Will, Carl E. Schneider, Angela Fagerlin

Law Quadrangle (formerly Law Quad Notes)

Enough. The living will has failed, and it is time to say so.

We should have known it would fail: A notable but neglected psychological literature always provided arresting reasons to expect the policy of living wills to misfire. Given their alluring potential, perhaps they were worth trying. But a crescendoing empirical literature and persistent clinical disappointments reveal that the rewards of the campaign to promote living wills do not justify its costs.

Effect Of Calcium Lactate On Quality, Safety And Nutritional Senescence Parameters Of Minimally Processed Vegetables, Ana Belen Martin-Diana, Daniel Rico, Jesus Maria Frias, Jemina Mulcahy, Gary Henehan, Catherine Barry-Ryan Jan 2005

Effect Of Calcium Lactate On Quality, Safety And Nutritional Senescence Parameters Of Minimally Processed Vegetables, Ana Belen Martin-Diana, Daniel Rico, Jesus Maria Frias, Jemina Mulcahy, Gary Henehan, Catherine Barry-Ryan

Articles

Calcium lactate maintained quality senescence indicators, as well as chlorine in Iceberg lettuce, and enhanced nutritional values during storage in sliced carrots better than chlorine. Colour and texture objective measurements did not show differences between treatments for Iceberg lettuce; however there were differences in colour in sliced carrots, showing greater change in colour values in samples treated with chlorine. Calcium lactate washing treatments prevented the bleaching effect on saladcut lettuce and sliced carrots and also diminished the appearance of white surfaces over storage. The ascorbic acid decreased during storage independently of the type of treatment used for both vegetables, however …

Novel Washing Methods To Extend The Quality And Enhance The Nutritional Value Of Minimally Processed Vegetable Products, Ana Belen Martin-Diana, Daniel Rico, Jesus Maria Frias, Jemina Mulcahy, Gary Henehan, Catherine Barry-Ryan Jan 2005

Novel Washing Methods To Extend The Quality And Enhance The Nutritional Value Of Minimally Processed Vegetable Products, Ana Belen Martin-Diana, Daniel Rico, Jesus Maria Frias, Jemina Mulcahy, Gary Henehan, Catherine Barry-Ryan

Articles

This paper reports on the development of alternative washing treatments to extend the quality and safety of fresh cut-vegetables and improve their nutritional value. Washing with Ca-lactate (3%) prevented the bleaching effect on salad-cut lettuce and sliced carrots and the appearance of whiteness on the second one normally associated with sodium hypochlorite washing solutions (120 ppm Chlorine). Ca-lactate maintained and enhanced nutritional values during storage, especially in carrots. Sliced carrots treated with Ca-lactate had significant (p

An Evaluation Of Supplemental Methionine Sources For Lactating Dairy Cows, Ryan S. Ordway Jan 2005

An Evaluation Of Supplemental Methionine Sources For Lactating Dairy Cows, Ryan S. Ordway

Doctoral Dissertations

The most effective method for increasing supplies of MP-Met to dairy cows to increase milk protein production is to feed rumen-protected Met ( RP-Met) products; however, not all RP-Met products are absorbed by the dairy cow in the same manner. Universally acceptable methods must be developed to determine the efficacy of different RP-Met products.

The first study was designed to compare the feeding of two sources of supplementary Met beginning 21 d prepartum and continuing for 140 d postpartum. The results indicated that feeding both sources of RPMet to periparturient dairy cows is effective in increasing milk protein production; however, …
