The Natural History, Distribution, And Phenotypic Variation Of Cave-Dwelling Spring Salamanders, Gyrinophilus Spp. Cope (Plethodontidae), In West Virginia, Michael Steven Osbourn

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

There are over 4000 documented caves in West Virginia, potentially providing refuge and habitat for a diversity of amphibians and reptiles. Spring Salamanders, Gyrinophilus porphyriticus, are among the most frequently encountered amphibians in caves. Surveys of 25 caves provided expanded distribution records and insight into ecology and diet of G. porphyriticus. Over 500 species locality records were compiled in a nearly comprehensive list. The Gyrinophilus population from General Davis Cave is of particular interest. In 1977, Besharse and Holsinger first described the West Virginia Spring Salamander, G. subterraneus; however, its taxonomic status is unclear. In order to …

Human Rights And Bioethics: Formulating A Universal Right To Health, Health Care, Or Health Protection?, George P. Smith Ii

Scholarly Articles

Codifying, and then implementing, an international right to health, health care, or protection is beset with serious roadblocks - foremost among them being contentious issues of indeterminacy, justiciability, and progressive realization. Although advanced - and to some degree recognized under the rubric of a social or cultural entitlement within the law of human rights and, more particularly, the U.S. Declaration on Human Rights, together with International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR), the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, the European Convention on Human Rights, and presently UNESCO's Draft Declaration on Universal Norms on Bioethics - attainment …

Holding Media Responsible For Deceptive Weight-Loss Advertising, Chester S. Galloway, Herbert Jack Rotfeld, Jef I. Richards

West Virginia Law Review

In Fall 2002, the Federal Trade Commission held a Workshop exploring the problem of misleading weight-loss promotional pitches. After the agency spent decades cleaning up deceptive advertising, the weight-loss industry continues to be replete with such tactics. In an attempt to more aggressively attack those deceptions, the FTC used the Workshop as a forum to suggest that media should play a more active role in screening ads for diet products and programs. Some saw this as an implied threat that the agency may begin holding media liable for publishing those ads. Media protest that this forces them into the de …

The Uptake Of Amino Acids By Microbes And Trees In Three Cold-Temperate Forests, Adrien C. Finzi, Sean T. Berthrong

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Amino acids are emerging as a critical component of the terrestrial N cycle, yet there is little understanding of amino acid cycling in temperate forests. This research studied the uptake and turnover of amino acid N by soil microbes and the capacity of forest trees to take up the amino acid glycine in comparison to NH4+ and NO3−. This research was conducted in three temperate forests located in northwest Connecticut, USA. The three forests differed in soil parent material and canopy tree species composition. At all three sites, amino acids were released from soil organic …

Relevance Of Age And Special Needs In Initial Development Phases Of A Child Neglect Scale, Stephanie Ann Stowman Jan 2005

Relevance Of Age And Special Needs In Initial Development Phases Of A Child Neglect Scale, Stephanie Ann Stowman

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Currently, there is a lack of standardized procedures in Child Protective Services (CPS) agencies in regards to risk assessment for child neglect. Available child neglect assessment measures often lack empirical support or are limited by response bias due to the focus on parental responsibility. This study utilized interviews with CPS employees to obtain descriptions of child neglect situations. A questionnaire was then generated based on the interviews and distributed to additional CPS employees. The questionnaire examined respondents' likelihood to substantiate each item as neglect, the frequency each item occurred and the perceived level of harm for each item across multiple …

Values And Objectivity In Science: The Current Controversy About Transgenic Crops, Hugh Lacey Jan 2005

Values And Objectivity In Science: The Current Controversy About Transgenic Crops, Hugh Lacey

Philosophy Faculty Works

Values and Objectivity in Science illustrates many of the ethical issues that arise concerning scientific practices and applications, offering an account of how social and ethical values play important roles in science. Hugh Lacey develops and clarifies his previous analysis by arguing for the importance of research being conducted under a plurality of strategies, contrasting materialist strategies with agro-ecological strategies. By displaying the structure of current ethical controversies about the legitimacy of planting transgenic crops, this book illustrates that sound thinking on such issues must be grounded on an adequate philosophy of science, one that can clearly distinguish between the …

Trans-10,Cis-12 Cla Increases Adipocyte Lipolysis And Alters Lipid Droplet-Associated Proteins: Role Of Mtor And Erk Signaling, Soonkyu Chung, Jonathan Mark Brown, Maria Boysen Sandberg, Michael Mcintosh

Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Faculty Publications

Lipid droplet-associated proteins play an important role in adipocyte triglyceride (TG) metabolism. Here, we show that trans-10,cis-12 conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), but not cis-9,trans-11 CLA, increased lipolysis and altered human adipocyte lipid droplet morphology. Before this change in morphology, there was a rapid trans-10,cis-12 CLA-induced increase in the accumulation of perilipin A in the cytosol, followed by the disappearance of perilipin A protein. In contrast, protein levels of adipose differentiation-related protein (ADRP) were increased in cultures treated with trans-10,cis-12 CLA. Immunostaining revealed that ADRP localized to the surface …

New Routes To Low Mortality In Poor Countries? Crossover In The Roles Of Income And Female Education, Tom Vogl Jan 2005

New Routes To Low Mortality In Poor Countries? Crossover In The Roles Of Income And Female Education, Tom Vogl

Undergraduate Economic Review

This paper explores how the cross-national determinants of infant mortality and life expectancy at birth have evolved over the past two decades. In particular, I examine the relative roles of female education and per capital income in the mortality decline. Contrasting the recent shift away from economic determinism by a large bloc in the literature, my findings indicate that per capita income has become a stronger determinant of mortality, while the revealed effect of female education has declined. Part, but not all, of the observed shift can be attributed to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. This change may imply a shift back …

Dietary Restraint, Self-Efficacy, And Gender Differences In Weight Loss Program Participants, Amy Elizabeth Sheeley Jan 2005

Dietary Restraint, Self-Efficacy, And Gender Differences In Weight Loss Program Participants, Amy Elizabeth Sheeley

Open Access Dissertations

Rates of overweight and obesity continue to rise each year with serious associated health risks. This study was conducted to explore gender differences between behavior change variables for both dietary fat reduction and exercise behaviors in a weight loss population. This research also investigated relationships between these psychosocial behavior change variables. Over 300 overweight and obese men and women enrolled in weight loss programs in the greater Boston area completed self-administered surveys. The behavior change variables surveyed included validated Transtheoretical Model (TTM) measures of stage of change for dietary fat reduction, situational confidence and temptation for dietary fat reduction, as …
