Journal of Marine Research

The onset, development and decay of a winter bloom of the marine diatom Skeletonema costatum was monitored during a 10 d period in the coastal upwelling system of the Ría de Vigo (NW Spain). The succession of upwelling, relaxation and downwelling-favorable coastal winds with a frequency of 10–20 d is a common feature of the NW Iberian shelf. The onset of the bloom occurred during an upwelling-favorable ½ wk period under winter thermal inversion conditions. The subsequent ½ wk coastal wind relaxation period allowed development of the bloom (gross primary production reached 8g C m−2 d−1) utilizing …

Response Of Cow-Calf Pairs To Water High In Sulfates, Hubert Patterson, Pat Johnson, George Perry, Roger Gates, Ron Haigh Jan 2005

Response Of Cow-Calf Pairs To Water High In Sulfates, Hubert Patterson, Pat Johnson, George Perry, Roger Gates, Ron Haigh

South Dakota Beef Report, 2005

Data from our laboratory showed water sulfate levels of 3,000 ppm reduced performance and health of growing steers during summer months. In addition, water averaging 2,600 ppm in sulfates for cow-calf pairs had little impact on calf growth or milk production, but caused small reductions in cow BW and body condition score (BCS). This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of high sulfate water on cow and calf performance, milk production, and reproduction. Ninety-six crossbred, lactating cows (ages 2-13; average calving date of April 14) and their calves were assigned, after stratifying by age, weight, and previous winter management, …

Tick Saliva Is A Potent Inhibitor Of Endothelial Cell Proliferation And Angiogenesis, Ivo M.B. Francischetti, Thomas N. Mather, José M.C. Ribeiro

Plant Sciences and Entomology Faculty Publications

We report for the first time that saliva of the hard tick and Lyme disease vector,Ixodes scapularis,is a potent inhibitor of angiogenesis. Saliva (≤ 1:500 dilutions) or salivary gland (0.1–0.5 pairs/assay) dose-dependently inhibits microvascular endothelial cell (MVEC) proliferation. Inhibition was also detected with the saliva of the cattle tick Boophilus microplus but not with the salivary gland of Anopheles gambiae, An. stephensi, Lutzomyia longipalpis, Phlebotomus papatasi, Aedes aegypti, Culex quinquefasciatus, and Cimex lectularius. Inhibition of MVEC proliferation by I. scapularis saliva was accompanied by a change in cell shape (shrinkage of the cytoplasm with loss of cell-cell interactions) and apoptosis …

Prenatal Stress And Stress Physiology Influences Human Fetal And Infant Development, Elyssia Poggi Davis, Calvin J. Hobel, Curt A. Sandman, Laura M. Glynn, Pathik D. Wadhwa Jan 2005

Prenatal Stress And Stress Physiology Influences Human Fetal And Infant Development, Elyssia Poggi Davis, Calvin J. Hobel, Curt A. Sandman, Laura M. Glynn, Pathik D. Wadhwa

Psychology Faculty Books and Book Chapters

"Prenatal stress has been proposed as a risk factor that may have developmental consequences persisting throughout the lifespan. Exposing rodents to stress during pregnancy has consequences for brain development, stress regulation, learning, emotionality (increased anxiety), and social behavior (increased withdrawal) of the offspring (Weinstock, 2001; Chapillon et al., 2002). Additionally, non-human primates who experience stress during pregnancy have offspring with enhanced behavioral reactivity to stressors later in life (Clarke et al., 1994), lowered levels of motor behavior (Schneider, 1992), compromised neuromotor responses (Schneider and Coe, 1993), irritable temperament (Schneider et al., 1992), and attentional problems (Schneider et …

Comparison Of The Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome Between Monomicrobial And Polymicrobial Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Nosocomial Bloodstream Infections, Alexandre R. Marra, Gonzalo M. L. Bearman, Richard P. Wenzel, Michael B. Edmond

Internal Medicine Publications

Background Some studies of nosocomial bloodstream infection (nBSI) have demonstrated a higher mortality for polymicrobial bacteremia when compared to monomicrobial nBSI. The purpose of this study was to compare differences in systemic inflammatory response and mortality between monomicrobial and polymicrobial nBSI with Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Methods We performed a historical cohort study on 98 adults with P. aeruginosa (Pa) nBSI. SIRS scores were determined 2 days prior to the first positive blood culture through 14 days afterwards. Monomicrobial (n = 77) and polymicrobial BSIs (n = 21) were compared.

Results 78.6% of BSIs were caused by monomicrobial P. aeruginosa infection (MPa) …

Mechanisms Of Growth Hormone Enhancement Of Excitatory Synaptic Transmission In Hippocampus, Ghada Saad Zaglool Ahmed Mahmoud Jan 2005

Mechanisms Of Growth Hormone Enhancement Of Excitatory Synaptic Transmission In Hippocampus, Ghada Saad Zaglool Ahmed Mahmoud

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Growth hormone (GH) deficiency is associated with impaired learning and memory. One possible target for GH effects on memory is the hippocampus, a brain region containing GH receptors (GHRs). To determine if GH acutely alters hippocampal function, recombinant human GH (rhGH) was applied to in vitro rat hippocampal brain slices. Extracellular recordings were used to assess effects of GH on the field EPSP (fEPSP) and long-term potentiation (LTP) of the fEPSP. GHR expression was measured in GH-treated and control rat hippocampal slices using RT-PCR. The GH signaling pathway was investigated by studying the effect of GH on the fEPSP after …

Perfecting Patient Flow: America's Safety Net Hospitals And Emergency Department Crowding, Marcia J. Wilson, Bruce Siegel, Mike Williams Jan 2005

Perfecting Patient Flow: America's Safety Net Hospitals And Emergency Department Crowding, Marcia J. Wilson, Bruce Siegel, Mike Williams

Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications

Emergency department crowding and delays have become major issues for America's safety net hospitals and health systems. Many facilities are experiencing increasing wait times, a need to "board" admitted patients in emergency department (ED) hallways, and rising numbers of hours spent on "diversion" or "bypass." These trends result from increased patient demand at a time when the number of emergency departments has declined and hospital inpatient capacity has lagged. Other factors also may contribute to the crisis. Patients without access to medical specialists may view the ED as the quickest route to specialized services. Overburdened physicians may be more likely …

Medical, Racist, And Colonial Constructions Of Power In Anne Fadiman's The Spirit Catches You And You Fall Down, Monica E. Chiu Jan 2005

Medical, Racist, And Colonial Constructions Of Power In Anne Fadiman's The Spirit Catches You And You Fall Down, Monica E. Chiu

English

This essay looks at the values attributed or denied to "culture" (medical culture, history, Southeast Asian refugees, Asian American cultural citizenship) in the care surrounding a Hmong child diagnosed with spirit loss, according to Hmong interpretation, or epilepsy, as defined by Western medicine. In my reading of Anne Fadiman's The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down: A Hmong Child, Her American Doctors, and the Collision of Two Cultures, medical, colonial, and authorial knowledge often converge in devastating ways, linking the seemingly disparate discourses of war, refugee medicine, and the model minority through colonial representations. I also look at the …
