The Reproductive Cycle Of The Thorny Skate (Amblyraid Radiata) In The Western Gulf Of Maine, James A. Sulikowski, Jeff Kneebone, Scott Elzey, Joe Jurek, Patrick D. Danley, William Huntting Howell, Paul C.W. Tsang Jan 2005

The Reproductive Cycle Of The Thorny Skate (Amblyraid Radiata) In The Western Gulf Of Maine, James A. Sulikowski, Jeff Kneebone, Scott Elzey, Joe Jurek, Patrick D. Danley, William Huntting Howell, Paul C.W. Tsang

Biological Sciences

The thorny skate (Amblyraja radiata) is a large species of skate that is endemic to the waters of the western north Atlantic in the Gulf of Maine. Because the biomass of thorny skates has recently declined below threshold levels mandated by the Sustainable Fisheries Act, commercial harvests from this region are prohibited. We have undertaken a comprehensive study to gain insight into the life history of this skate. The present study describes and characterizes the reproductive cycle of female and male thorny skates, based on monthly samples taken off the coast of New Hampshire, from May 2001 to May 2003. …

Age And Growth Estimates Of The Thorny Skate (Amblyraja Radiata) In The Western Gulf Of Maine, James A. Sulikowski, Jeff Kneebone, Scott Elzey, Joe Jurek, Patrick D. Danley, William Huntting Howell, Paul C.W. Tsang

Biological Sciences

The northwest Atlantic population of thorny skates (Amblyraja radiata) inhabits an area that ranges from Greenland and Hudson Bay, Canada, to South Carolina. Despite such a wide range, very little is known about most aspects of the biology of this species. Recent stock assessment studies in the northeast United States indicate that the biomass of the thorny skate is below the threshold levels mandated by the Sustainable Fisheries Act. In order to gain insight into the life history of this skate, we estimated age and growth for thorny skates, using vertebral band counts from 224 individuals ranging in size from …

Industrial Evolution In Response To Changes In The Demand For Traceability And Assurance: A Case Study Of Chilean Salmon Aquaculture, Tyler K. Olson, Keith Criddle Jan 2005

Industrial Evolution In Response To Changes In The Demand For Traceability And Assurance: A Case Study Of Chilean Salmon Aquaculture, Tyler K. Olson, Keith Criddle

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

The structure and organization of industries evolves over time in response to changes in the price and availability of inputs, changes in the demand for outputs and output attributes, and changes in technology. The growing demand for traceability and assurance is a change in the demand for credence attributes. Firms that are able to organize to provide traceability and assurance at low cost will, ceteris paribus, have an advantage. In recent years, many segments of the food and agribusiness industry have become more concentrated through horizontal or vertical integration within firms or within associations of firms (cooperatives). This paper explores …

A New Model To Estimate Daily Energy Expenditure For Wintering Waterfowl, Richard A. Mckinney, Scott R. Mcwilliams Jan 2005

A New Model To Estimate Daily Energy Expenditure For Wintering Waterfowl, Richard A. Mckinney, Scott R. Mcwilliams

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

Current models to estimate daily energy expenditure (DEE) for free-living birds are limited to either those that use fixed thermoregulatory costs or those that more accurately estimate thermoregulatory costs, but require extensive and often logistically difficult measurements. Here, we propose a model based on basal metabolic rate (BMR), activity budgets, and site-specific energetic costs of thermoregulation that requires only simple measures of ambient temperature and wind speed to provide estimates of DEE. We use the model to calculate the DEE of Buffleheads (Bucephala albeola) wintering at six habitats that afford differing degrees of protection from exposure within Narragansett …

Breastfeeding In The Hiv Epidemic: A Midwife's Dilemma In International Work, Jennifer Ellen Dohrn Jan 2005

Breastfeeding In The Hiv Epidemic: A Midwife's Dilemma In International Work, Jennifer Ellen Dohrn

Journal of Health Ethics

As standards develop to reduce the maternal-to-child transmission of HIV, healthcare professionals need to evaluate recommendations in the context of culturally-accepted values for the populations to be served. Breastfeeding, a central value in South African families, carries the risk of transmission in mothers that are HIV+. A dilemma faced by international workers is the sharing of information that challenges culturally-accepted practices.

A nurse-midwife working with HIV positive women during the childbearing cycle in the United States is expected to implement protocols to prevent transmission of the HIV virus to the newborn. These include administration of antiretroviral medications to the women …

Sacred Heart University Press Books

Public Policy in Connecticut examines ten of the key policy challenges that currently confront Connecticut lawmakers. Marketing Gm-Labeled Food Products In The United Kingdom: Can American Agribusinesses Do It Profitably?, Nathan S. Hill, Deevon Bailey Jan 2005

Marketing Gm-Labeled Food Products In The United Kingdom: Can American Agribusinesses Do It Profitably?, Nathan S. Hill, Deevon Bailey

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

American food companies selling products in the European Union are faced with the dilemma of either segregating non-GM components as inputs in food products or labeling their products as containing genetically modified material. This paper presents an analysis of whether or not GM-Iabeled food products could be sold profitably in the United Kingdom. The results suggest that GM-Iabeled foods would likely appeal principally to a low-income segment of the market in the EU, but that selling GM food products might still be profitable.
