Family And Consumer Sciences In Higher Education: Common Elements In Undergraduate Curriculum, Susan Lovett
Family And Consumer Sciences In Higher Education: Common Elements In Undergraduate Curriculum, Susan Lovett
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This study of undergraduate programs was undertaken to create a current portrait of Family and Consumer Sciences programs and to determine whether common ground exists among the various academic units particularly in the area of curriculum content. The thirty four schools having accreditation with SACS and AAFCS were chosen as the population to be studied. Two lists of curricular element categories were created to evaluate the programs: a 28 item list derived from historical categorizations used in professional journals and educational reporting and a 16 item list taken from the national standards for FCS in secondary programs. The subject matter …

Group Therapy For Eating Disorders: A Retrospective Case Study, Janine Wanlass, J. Kelly Moreno, Hannah M. Thomson
Group Therapy For Eating Disorders: A Retrospective Case Study, Janine Wanlass, J. Kelly Moreno, Hannah M. Thomson
Psychology and Child Development
An increasing amount of research supports group therapy as an effective treatment option for eating disorders (Moreno, 1994). In an attempt to further delineate therapeutic factors associated with productive group work, this study represents an exploratory, descriptive analysis of client and therapist perspectives on group process and outcome. Specifically, this retrospective study investigated what clients and their therapist considered important, helpful, and problematic in an aftercare group for hospitalized patients with eating disorders. The therapist and client perspectives were considered separately. These data were then classified into four categories: importance, benefits, problems, and critical incidents. A follow-up discussion explores similarities …

Effects Of Predation Pressure On The Cognitive Ability Of The Poeciliid Brachyraphis Episcopi, Culum Brown, Victoria A. Braithwaite
Sentience Collection
Variable levels of predation pressure are known to have significant impacts on the evolutionary ecology of different populations and can affect life-history traits, behavior, and morphology. To date, no studies have directly investigated the impact of predation pressure on cognitive ability. Here we use a system of replicate rivers, each with sites of high- and low-predation pressure, to investigate how this ecological variable affects learning ability in a tropical poeciliid, Brachyraphis episcopi. We used a spatial task to assess the cognitive ability of eight populations from four independent streams (four high- and four low- predation populations). The fish were required …

This white paper describes briefly the remarkable journey of community-based environmental justice advocates over the last 15 years and their impact on environmental regulation. It will also describe some of the empirical evidence of disparities and the regulatory dynamics that make these inequities an intractable problem, despite the collective efforts of grassroots leaders, environmental justice organizations, public interest law firms, and governmental officials. The paper then focuses on one important set of issues that must be tackled in order to achieve environmental justice: those involving injustice in risk regulation. We strive in this white paper, as allies in this collective …

Essays in Education
The purpose of this study is to investigate and compare steps taken in the United States and Ireland to prevent students leaving school without sufficient qualifications. The study focuses on the context and attitudes towards educational disadvantage in the two countries and the subsequent policies. The Bridging the Gap (BTG) project supported by University College Cork highlights an exemplar case study through which educational leaders in both countries have opportunities to learn from each other. Both educational systems face two endemic questions: 1) How to make the best use of educational research bridging policy and practice? 2) How to incorporate …
The Impact And Limits Of The Constitutional Deregulation Of Health Claims On Foods And Supplements: From Dementia To Nuts To Chocolate To Saw Palmetto, Margaret Gilhooley
The Impact And Limits Of The Constitutional Deregulation Of Health Claims On Foods And Supplements: From Dementia To Nuts To Chocolate To Saw Palmetto, Margaret Gilhooley
Mercer Law Review
The Food and Drug Administration ("FDA") recently issued an enforcement policy identifying the types of health claims in the disclaimers that are constitutionally permitted on foods and dietary supplements. In 1990 Congress required that before a company could make a health claim on a food product, the FDA must approve the claim as based on significant scientific agreement. While the 1990 law gave the FDA discretion to establish a lesser standard for nutritional supplements than for food products, the FDA chose to apply the same standard. Thus, claims on nutritional supplements had to be supported by significant scientific agreement. Supplement …

Models of sexual selection propose that exaggerated secondary sexual ornaments indicate a male's own fitness and the fitness of his offspring. These hypotheses have rarely been thoroughly tested in free-living individuals because overall fitness, as opposed to fitness components, is difficult to measure. We used 20 years of data from song sparrows ( Melospiza melodia) inhabiting Mandarte Island, British Columbia, Canada, to test whether a male's song repertoire size, a secondary sexual trait, predicted overall measures of male or offspring fitness. Males with larger song repertoires contributed more independent and recruited offspring, and independent and recruited grandoffspring, to Mandarte's population. …
