Aluminium Content Of Some Foods And Food Products In The Usa, With Aluminium Food Additives, Salim M. Saiyed, Robert A. Yokel

Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

The primary objective was to determine the aluminium (Al) content of selected foods and food products in the USA which contain Al as an approved food additive. Intake of Al from the labeled serving size of each food product was calculated. The samples were acid or base digested and analysed for Al using electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry. Quality control (QC) samples, with matrices matching the samples, were generated and used to verify the Al determinations. Food product Al content ranged from < 1–27,000 mg kg−1. Cheese in a serving of frozen pizzas had up to 14 mg of Al, from basic sodium …

Childhood And Adolescent Neighborhood Effects On Adult Income: Using Siblings To Examine Differences In Ordinary Least Squares And Fixed-Effect Models, Thomas P. Vartanian, P. W. Buck Mar 2005

Childhood And Adolescent Neighborhood Effects On Adult Income: Using Siblings To Examine Differences In Ordinary Least Squares And Fixed-Effect Models, Thomas P. Vartanian, P. W. Buck

Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research Faculty Research and Scholarship

Using sibling data from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics, this article examines the effects of child and adolescent neighborhood conditions on adult income. Estimates from fixed-effect models and ordinary least squares regression (OLS) models are compared at four stages of childhood development, with three important findings. First, OLS models that include extensive control variables do not necessarily overstate the effects of neighborhoods. Second, neighborhoods have both linear and nonlinear relationships with adult economic well-being. Third, neighborhoods exert effects on even the youngest children.

Influence Of Dietary Oils On Liver And Blood Lipid Peroxidation, Serdar Ergun, Mustafa Yontem, Azmi Yerlikaya, Ahmet Ozata, Kazim Uysal, Hulyam Kurt

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: Diets high in unsaturated fatty acids have been recommended to lower the risk of cardiovascular disease. However, these lipids are more susceptible to lipid peroxidation than saturated fatty acids. The aim of the present study described herein was to investigate the effects of dietary oils (differing in their degree of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids) on liver and blood lipid peroxidation in chicks. METHODS: The experiments were conducted at the laboratories of University of Dumlupinar, Kutahya, Turkey and Osmangazi University, Eskisehir, Turkey between November 2002 and December 2003. The animals were randomly divided into 5 groups of 30 and …

Survival Of 2 Extreme Preterm Neonates With Cardiac Tamponade As A Complication Of Percutaneous Central Venous Catheterization, Abdullah M. Alzaydi, Ali Y. Mersal, Saad A. Al-Saedi, Walid A. El-Naggar

Saudi Medical Journal

We report 2 extreme preterm neonates who developed cardiac tamponade secondary to perforation of the myocardium by the percutaneous silastic central venous catheters, which were inserted for parental nutrition. Percutaneous pericardiocentesis was performed and pericardial effusion was aspirated, later proved by analysis to be total parental nutrition. The lines were removed and the patients successfully resuscitated and survived, both were sent home in good condition.

Nutrition and Food Science Faculty Research Publications

Objective: We evaluated the effects of calcium pyruvate supplementation during training on body composition and metabolic responses to exercise.

Method: Twenty-three untrained females were matched and assigned to ingest in a double blind and randomized manner either 5 g of calcium pyruvate (PYR) or a placebo (PL) twice daily for 30 d while participating in a supervised exercise program. Prior to and following supplementation, subjects had body composition determined via hydrodensiometry; performed a maximal cardiopulmonary exercise test; and performed a 45-min walk test at 70% of pre-training VO2 max in which fasting pre- and post exercise blood samples determined. …

Role For Akt3/Protein Kinase Bγ In Attainment Of Normal Brain Size, Rachel M. Easton, Han Cho, Kristin Roovers, Diana W. Shineman Mar 2005

Role For Akt3/Protein Kinase Bγ In Attainment Of Normal Brain Size, Rachel M. Easton, Han Cho, Kristin Roovers, Diana W. Shineman

Dartmouth Scholarship

Studies of Drosophila and mammals have revealed the importance of insulin signaling through phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase and the serine/threonine kinase Akt/protein kinase B for the regulation of cell, organ, and organismal growth. In mammals, three highly conserved proteins, Akt1, Akt2, and Akt3, comprise the Akt family, of which the first two are required for normal growth and metabolism, respectively. Here we address the function of Akt3. Like Akt1, Akt3 is not required for the maintenance of normal carbohydrate metabolism but is essential for the attainment of normal organ size. However, in contrast to Akt1−/− mice, which display a …

A Separate Crime Of Reckless Sex, Ian Ayres, Katharine K. Baker Mar 2005

A Separate Crime Of Reckless Sex, Ian Ayres, Katharine K. Baker

University of Chicago Law Review

This Article attempts to make progress on the problems of both sexually transmitted disease and acquaintance rape by proposing a new crime of reckless sexual conduct. A defendant would be guilty of reckless sexual conduct if, in a first-time sexual encounter with another person, the defendant had sexual intercourse without using a condom. Consent to unprotected intercourse would be an affirmative defense, to be established by the defendant by a preponderance of the evidence. As an empirical matter, unprotected first-time sexual encounters greatly increase the epidemiological force of sexually transmitted disease, and a substantial proportion of acquaintance rape occurs in …

Management Of Menopause-Related Symptoms, Heidi D. Nelson, Elizabeth M. Haney, Laura Humphrey, Jill Miller, Anne Nedrow, Christina Nicolaidis, Kimberly K. Vesco, Miranda Walker, Christina Bougatsos, Peggy Nygren

School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

Although many measures have been developed to assess menopausal symptoms, few demonstrate standardization, validity, or reliability. Some measures are based on self-reports of the presence, severity, and frequency of individual symptoms, such as hot flashes. Others utilize cumulative or global scores based on lists or scales of symptoms attributed to menopause, such as mood, cognition, quality of life, sexual function, and somatic symptoms. Many studies base their measures on study-specific checklists, questionnaires, or scales. Ninety-two measures of menopausal symptoms were reported by studies included in this evidence review. This systematic evidence review focuses on five Key Questions relating to symptoms …

Motherhood And Tenure: Can Catholic Universities Support Both?, Bridget Burke Ravizza, Karen Peterson-Iyer Mar 2005

Motherhood And Tenure: Can Catholic Universities Support Both?, Bridget Burke Ravizza, Karen Peterson-Iyer

Journal of Catholic Education

This paper presents a plan for the implementation of more family-friendly policies at Catholic colleges and universities, both as a matter of justice for women and on behalf of the well being of families. It is motivated by the teachings of the Catholic social tradition that emphasize the equality and dignity of women; the importance of the dual vocations of Christian parents, who are called to raise children and to work more publicly on behalf of the common good; and the inherent value of children and their right to be properly nutured and educated within the Christian family. Our starting …

Head Size At Birth In Neonates With Transposition Of Great Arteries And Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome, Shabih Manzar, Arun K. Nair, Mangalore G. Pai, Saleh M. Al-Khusaiby Mar 2005

Head Size At Birth In Neonates With Transposition Of Great Arteries And Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome, Shabih Manzar, Arun K. Nair, Mangalore G. Pai, Saleh M. Al-Khusaiby

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: Appropriate fetal brain growth depends upon the cerebral blood flow (CBF). Different congenital heart defects (CHDs), due to the difference in anatomy and physiology, alter the intrauterine CBF. Thus, variable brain growth is expected in different CHDs that is reflected by variability in the head circumference (HC) at birth. The present study was carried out to compare the HC of babies born with transposition of great arteries (TGA) and hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) in comparison to normal control. METHODS: The data on the HC of neonates with TGA and HLHS were extracted from the computer database then compared …

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: Evaluation of known predictors of gangrene in neonates with necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) and identification of those suggestive of severe disease, requiring expeditious laparotomy rather than primary peritoneal drainage as a definitive treatment. METHODS: This is a retrospective review of data collected from the medical records of newborns with confirmed NEC, treated at the Maternity and Children9s Hospital, Dammam, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, from May 1993 to May 2004. Fifty-five cases were selected for the study, 23 had successful medical management and 32 underwent laparotomy. Of this group, 15 had peritoneal drainage prior to laparotomy. Nine known clinical, radiological and …

Deep Freeze: Islamic Charities And The Financial War On Terror., Erich Ferrari Mar 2005

Deep Freeze: Islamic Charities And The Financial War On Terror., Erich Ferrari

The Scholar: St. Mary's Law Review on Race and Social Justice

A balance between anti-terror legislation and civil liberties must be struck. The United States’ “financial war on terror,” following the attacks on September 11, 2001, has had negative consequences for global philanthropy. Charities supplying aid to Muslims in the Middle East and Central Asia have been affected the most, thwarting the acceptance of aid where it is needed. Legislation like the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) has allowed the government to freeze the assets of certain Islamic charities that allegedly aid and abet terrorism. Under this Act, the President has the power to regulate international economic dealing. Subsequent amendments …

Motivated Breast Cancer Screening Behavior And Its Cultural Antecedents, Patricia M. Flynn Mar 2005

Motivated Breast Cancer Screening Behavior And Its Cultural Antecedents, Patricia M. Flynn

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Discrepancies in breast cancer screening behavior exist among various ethnic groups in the United States (Jacobs & Lauderdale, 2001), with Latino American women reporting particularly low screening rates in comparison to Anglo American women (ACS, 2002). Research indicates that behavior is in part influenced by aspects of culture and relevant psychological processes (Betancourt & Lopez, 1993; Betancourt & Fuentes, 2001). This study was designed to investigate the relations among cultural values, attributions regarding the causes for not screening, related emotions, expectancy that screening leads to early detection and value incentive of early detection as determinants of breast cancer screening intention …

Impact Of Reduced Lignin On Plant Fitness, J. F, Pedersen, K. P. Vogel, D. L. Funnell Mar 2005

Impact Of Reduced Lignin On Plant Fitness, J. F, Pedersen, K. P. Vogel, D. L. Funnell

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Lignin content of crop plants has been reduced by traditional plant breeding, natural and induced mutations, and insertion of transgenes. The effects of these genes and associated lower lignin content have been examined in terms of agricultural fitness or with regard to economically harvestable yields of useful plant products, or, in the case of some perennial species, survivability over multiple years. In general, crop yields are depressed by significant reductions in lignin content. Other negative effects observed in plants with lowered lignin contents include lodging and reduction of long-term survival of some perennial species. However, the interactions of genes involved …
