Agricultural Systems For Saline Soil: The Potential Role Of Livestock, David G. Masters, H C. Norman, E G. Barrett-Lennard Apr 2005

Agricultural Systems For Saline Soil: The Potential Role Of Livestock, David G. Masters, H C. Norman, E G. Barrett-Lennard

Natural Resources Research Articles

Human-induced soil salinity is becoming a major threat to agriculture across the world. This salinisation occurs in both irrigated and rain-fed agricultural zones with the highest proportions in the arid and semi-arid environments. Livestock can play an important role in the management and rehabilitation of this land. There are a range of plants that grow in saline soils and these have been used as animal feed. In many situations, animal production has been poor as a result of low edible biomass production, low nutritive value, depressed appetite, or a reduction in efficiency of energy use. Feeding systems are proposed that …

Are Nutrients Assimilated By Juveniles Of The Brittle Star Amphipholis Squamata (Echinodermata: Ophiuroidea)?, Elizabeth A.G. Whitehill '05

Honors Projects

Over 50 species of brittle stars (Echinodennata: Ophiuroidea) are known to brood their developmental stages (embryos and larvae) through metamorphosis in internal structures called bursae (Hyman, 1955). In some of these brooding ophiuroids, the source of the organic material necessary to support the growth and development of the embryos is somewhat obscure because the amount of material required is not maternally supplied in the egg. A species that follows this example is Amphipholis squamata (Delle Chiaje). Previous studies (Fontaine and Chia 1968) have shown that the larvae of A. squamata are able to acquire the organic material needed to sustain …

Culturability, Temporal Change, Phylogenetic Analysis, And Yield Of Bacterial Communities In A Subarctic Lake: Harding Lake, Xiaoming Zhao Apr 2005

Culturability, Temporal Change, Phylogenetic Analysis, And Yield Of Bacterial Communities In A Subarctic Lake: Harding Lake, Xiaoming Zhao

Chemistry and Biochemistry

Heterotrophic bacteria, adapted to small concentrations of substrate, are a main component of the microbial flywheel. However, understandings of their activity, isolation, genetics, and nutrition are restricted to the large, easily isolated and culturable bacteria. By using the dilution culture method, apparent culturabilities could approach 10% in unamended lake water and were inversely proportional to the number of cells inoculated from mixed species in a natural environment from Harding Lake. Substrate additions could not improve bacterial culturability in the dilution cultures. Comparative sequence analyses of 16S rDNA genes showed that all bacterial species have similar lengths in the phylogenetic tree, …

Current Primary Production Rates Of The Western Arctic Ocean Estimated By Stable Carbon And Nitrogen Isotope Tracers, Sang Heon Lee Apr 2005

Current Primary Production Rates Of The Western Arctic Ocean Estimated By Stable Carbon And Nitrogen Isotope Tracers, Sang Heon Lee

Marine Biology

Currently, the environments in the Arctic are rapidly changing. These changes of climate and ice conditions may alter the quantity, quality, and timing of production of ice algae and phytoplankton in the Arctic Ocean. The objectives in this study were to detect any change in the carbon production between current and previous studies and lay the groundwork for the future monitoring of ecosystem response to climate change in the different regions of the western Arctic Ocean. As an Arctic ocean mostly covered by multi or first-year ice, the deep Canada Basin had generally low photosynthetic rates and the maximum rates …

The Contribution Of Anilca To Alaska's Economy, Steve Colt Apr 2005

The Contribution Of Anilca To Alaska's Economy, Steve Colt

ISER Reports

This paper presents an assessment of the economic contribution of ANILCA and ANILCA-protected ecosystems to Alaska’s economy. I consider the links between the conservation units designated by the Act and a healthy Alaska economy. The paper consists largely of synthesis and application of existing data and research. It does not consider global ecosystem services or other values that are not currently captured within the Alaska economy. ANILCA was a one-time “natural experiment.” It is not possible, therefore, to observe how the Alaska economy would have evolved absent ANILCA. This makes it difficult if not impossible to say that the Act …

Seasonal Variability Of Pristane In Mussels (Mytilus Trossulus) In Prince William Sound, Alaska, Jeffrey W. Short Apr 2005

Seasonal Variability Of Pristane In Mussels (Mytilus Trossulus) In Prince William Sound, Alaska, Jeffrey W. Short

Fisheries

Pristane (2,6,10,14-tetramethylpentadecane) concentrations in mussels (Mytilus trossulus) increase abruptly during spring in Prince William Sound (PWS), Alaska. This increase is mainly due to ingestion by mussels of pristane-laden feces produced by nearshore zooplanktivores, especially juvenile pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha), and I evaluate whether the increase may be used as an index of foraging success, and hence early marine survival, of pink salmon. Pristane is biosynthesized by Neocalanus copepods. Examination of the trophic and temporal distribution of pristane found in 3,007 samples implicates Neocalanus copepods as the source of pristane in PWS. Neocalanus copepods often dominate the zooplankton biomass during spring …

Establishing A Farmers Market For A Low-Income Latino Community, Ann L. Bretnall Apr 2005

Establishing A Farmers Market For A Low-Income Latino Community, Ann L. Bretnall

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

For the past decade, Florida’s Latino population has significantly increased and is now the third largest in the United States. The same trend has also occurred in Hillsborough County. Social and economic disparities are significant as Latinos earn less than non-Hispanic whites and many live in poverty. A major concern of this population is the lack of access to inexpensive fresh fruits and vegetables. Findings from prior research show that the diet of immigrants often change quickly upon their arrival to the United States, with an increased emphasis on fast food and soft drinks and a reduction in the consumption …
