Young Singles: A Look At The Grocery Shopping Preferences Of A Unique And Underestimated Market, Survey & Analysis, Kelley Steinhofer

Honors Theses

Single person households make up a substantial percentage of the total U.S population. More than 102 million people aged 15 and over were not married in 2003. On a household basis, 48.5% of U.S. households were not headed by married couples. Some of these households are "nonfamily" which excludes single parent households according to U.S. Census Bureau definitions. Most studies that examine a specific demographic group have focused on households with children and mature consumers because their purchasing behaviors are highly predictable and easily obtainable. Very little research currently exists on the market of young, single adult consumers. This study …

Recognition And Treatment Of Anaphylaxis By Day Care Providers, Michele Trach Glood Apr 2005

Recognition And Treatment Of Anaphylaxis By Day Care Providers, Michele Trach Glood

Theses and Graduate Projects

BACKGROUND: Anaphylaxis is a severe, potentially life-threatening allergic reaction. Foods, medications, insect venom and latex are the four most common anaphylactic agents. Of these, foods account for most anaphylactic reactions in children. Delayed treatment with epinephrine is the critical factor between anaphylaxis and death. Research has shown that recognition and treatment of anaphylaxis in schools and other child care settings is inadequate. This study was designed to determine if day care providers received severe allergy and anaphylaxis training and if they were confident in recognizing and treating anaphylaxis' METHODS: Sixty licensed home day care providers and 60 employees of licensed …

Should I Diet? What Should I Eat? Different Decision Making Factors Predict Dieting Intentions Versus Actual Dietary Behavior, Marc T. Kiviniemi, Kristi E. White, Amy M. Humke Apr 2005

Should I Diet? What Should I Eat? Different Decision Making Factors Predict Dieting Intentions Versus Actual Dietary Behavior, Marc T. Kiviniemi, Kristi E. White, Amy M. Humke

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Many individuals diet to lose weight. Most attempts are not successful—weight is either not lost or is quickly regained. We investigated decision making factors influencing dieting intentions versus those influencing actual behavior. Prior to eating in a university cafeteria, 65 participants reported their cost-benefit beliefs about low fat foods and fruits/vegetables, affective associations with both food categories, and whether they were currently dieting to lose weight. After the meal, participants reported what they ate. Using these reports and nutritional data from the college dining service, we computed the calories, total and saturated fat, sodium, and cholesterol consumed. Cost-benefit beliefs and affective …

Current Mood And Food Choices: The Relation Between Positive Affect And Dietary Behavior, Kristi E. White, Amy M. Humke, Marc T. Kiviniemi Apr 2005

Current Mood And Food Choices: The Relation Between Positive Affect And Dietary Behavior, Kristi E. White, Amy M. Humke, Marc T. Kiviniemi

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Colloquially, much is made of the relation between food and mood. For example, “comfort foods” are eaten in the service of affect regulation. Affect can influence behavioral choices in a number of ways. We investigated whether college students’ mood when making dietary choices influenced the nutritional value of the foods chosen. Sixty-five participants completed a questionnaire immediately prior to eating a meal in a college dining hall. The questionnaire included a measure of current positive affect. Following the meal, participants reported what they ate for dinner. Using nutritional data from the college dining services, we used participants’ self reported food …

Application Of The Time-Dependent Roc Curves For Prognostic Accuracy With Multiple Biomarkers, Yingye Zheng, Tianxi Cai, Ziding Feng

UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series

The rapid advancement in molecule technology has lead to the discovery of many markers that have potential applications in disease diagnosis and prognosis. In a prospective cohort study, information on a panel of biomarkers as well as the disease status for a patient are routinely collected over time. Such information is useful to predict patients' prognosis and select patients for targeted therapy. In this paper, we develop procedures for constructing a composite test with optimal discrimination power when there are multiple markers available to assist in prediction and characterize the accuracy of the resulting test by extending the time-dependent receiver …

The Interactive Roles Of Gender And Ethnicity In African-American Women's Mental Health, Dianna Nadine Moses-Nunley Apr 2005

The Interactive Roles Of Gender And Ethnicity In African-American Women's Mental Health, Dianna Nadine Moses-Nunley

Dissertations

Abstract For African-American women, female gender and African-American (AA) ethnicity combine to create experiences of discrimination, discrimination related stress, and mental health issues that are not encountered by individuals who occupy only one of these status variables. Gender and ethnicity also influence socioeconomic status, an additional variable affecting the experiences and issues that AA women uniquely encounter. The first goal of this study was to examine the ways in which the combined social statuses of gender and ethnicity influence the discriminatory experiences and mental health of AA women. The second goal was to determine the ways in which AA women¿s …

The Library, Stephen Deck

Undergraduate Student Symposium

A short story about a librarian who breaks his glasses on his way to work, and the day he spends without them. The focus is primarily on the visual aspects of being without glasses, the world as it appears to the myopic. Freed somewhat from a reliance on normal sight, the protagonist discovers a new clarity and freedom.
