Nutrient Relationships Between Orobanche Fasciculata Nutt. And Its Host Artemisia Pygmaea Gray In The Uinta Basin Of Utah, Usa, Jack D. Brotherson, Brenda T. Simmons, Terry Ball, W. Ralph Anderson
Nutrient Relationships Between Orobanche Fasciculata Nutt. And Its Host Artemisia Pygmaea Gray In The Uinta Basin Of Utah, Usa, Jack D. Brotherson, Brenda T. Simmons, Terry Ball, W. Ralph Anderson
Western North American Naturalist
Patterns of mineral nutrient uptake and distribution within the roots, stems, and leaves of Artemisia pygmaea and in the vascular parasite Orobanche fasciculata were investigated. All nutrients studied were magnified over concentrations found in the soil into the host and parasite. Nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and zinc were magnified along the flow gradient of soil-roots-stems-leaves of the host. All others increased in the roots and then decreased in the stems and leaves. Orobanche fasciculata concentrated phosphorus, potassium, and sodium over soil and root concentrations while excluding to some degree all others.

Dietary Omega-3 Fatty Acids And Ionizing Irradiation On Human Breast Cancer Xenograft Growth And Angiogenesis, W. Elaine Hardman, Luzhe Sun, Nicholas Short, Ivan L. Cameron
Biochemistry and Microbiology
Background
The effects of an omega-3 (n-3) fatty acid enriched diet alone and in combination with gamma irradiation (IR) therapy in nude mice bearing a human MDA-MB231 breast cancer xenograft were tested. The cancer cells were injected into the mammary fat pad of young female mice. Six weeks later, mice were randomly divided into two diet groups: 1) mice with 10% corn oil (rich in omega 6 fatty acids) in their food, 2) mice consuming a 10% fat diet that was enriched in n-3 fatty acids. After two weeks on the diet, treatment with 200 cGy of IR every second …

Influence Of Breed, Heterozygosity, And Disease Incidence On Estimates Of Variance Components Of Respiratory Disease In Preweaned Beef Calves, G. D. Snowder, L. Dale Van Vleck, L. V. Cundiff, G. L. Bennett
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
The objective of this study was to characterize genetic and environmental factors influencing bovine respiratory disease (BRD) in beef cattle. Records from nine purebred and three composite breeds and a variety of F1 and three-way crosses, including the progeny of 12 additional different sire breeds produced over a 20-yr period (1983 to 2002), were evaluated for breed and heterozygosity effects on the observed incidence of BRD. Heterozygosity fractions for calves and dams were defined by generalized breed origins: British, Continental, and tropically adapted. Variance components were estimated for each pure and composite breed, and across all breeds and crossbreeds. The …

Digestibility, Nitrogen Balance, And Blood Metabolites In Llama And Alpaca Fed Barley And Barley Alfalfa Forages., Heather Loree Davies
Theses and Dissertations
These projects were conducted to determine the digestibility of forage diets with differing CP levels in llamas and alpacas. The Utah study was designed to compare llama and alpaca nutritional parameters to determine if nutritional recommendations for llamas can be directly extrapolated to alpacas. The first study evaluated the effects of forage quality on blood metabolites and nitrogen balance in mature, intact male llamas (n = 4, 36 ± 4.4 months, 87 ± 17 kg) at high altitude in Letanias, Bolivia (4,267 m = aprox.14,000 ft above sea level). A second experiment was conducted with eight adult gelded camelids (n …

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
The total N in the grain is the integral of the product of the total N absorbed at any instant and the fraction of that N eventually allocated to the grain. We investigated the temporal origin of N in the grain of a wet season rice crop and tested the suitability of 15N nitrate (NH4 15NO3) as a label for that purpose. The total N content of rice (Oryza sativa L.) plants was measured by growth analysis throughout the duration of the crop and the measurements were used to calculate the rate of total …

Dynamic Response Indicators Of Heat Stress In Shaded And Non-Shaded Feedlot Cattle, Part 2: Predictive Relationships, R. A. Eigenberg, T. M. Brown-Brandl, John A. Nienaber, G. Leroy Hahn

Summer heat provides stressful conditions for Bos taurus feeder cattle; in extreme instances these conditions can be fatal. One management option is to provide shade structures for feedlot animals. This study was conducted during the summer of 2001 to compare physiological responses of cattle with shade access or no-shade access. Eight steers were selected from a group of 12, and assigned individual pens. Four pens were fitted with shade structures that allowed the steers to choose shade; the remainder had no shade option. The animals were rotated through pen assignments during the summer season. Continuous measures of respiration rate and …

A Preliminary Evaluation Of Heartland Head Start, Michelle Uhlenkott '05
A Preliminary Evaluation Of Heartland Head Start, Michelle Uhlenkott '05
Honors Projects
Head Start, a federally funded preschool program for low-income families, works to nurture the children academically, socially, and nutritionally. In the past couple of years social critics and the federal government have begun questioning the efforts of Head Start, arguing that the children in the program do not progress enough in academic areas for the money spent on them. Heartland Head Start, the local chapter which manages thirteen preschool classrooms and 325-330 children annually, is mandated by the federal government to observe and test the children three times per year on multiple indicators to monitor their academic progress. This study, …
