Dois And Deeplinked E-Reserves: Innovative Links For The Future, Scott A. Warren Jan 2005

Dois And Deeplinked E-Reserves: Innovative Links For The Future, Scott A. Warren

Librarian Publications

Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) have uses beyond reference linking and document identification, which are their current primary selling points. Due to their inherent stability, DOIs are well suited for creating deeplinked e-reserves. This paper outlines reasons why libraries should use DOIs whenever possible in the construction of deeplinked e-reserves and provides examples of how such linking can take place, including means for providing security and authentication. Other innovative uses for DOIs in academic libraries are suggested. [Article copies available for a fee from The Haworth Document Delivery Service: 1-800-HAWORTH. Homeland Insecurities: Teaching And The Intercultural Imagination, John Kuo Wei Tchen Jan 2005

Homeland Insecurities: Teaching And The Intercultural Imagination, John Kuo Wei Tchen

Imagining America

John Kuo Wei Tchen, director of the Asian/Pacific/American Studies Program and Institute and associate professor of the Gallatin School for Individualized Study and the History Department of the Faculty of Arts & Sciences, New York University, brings to life three imagined students, who reflect the experiences of many real students. On behalf of “Alice,” “Alicia,” and “Ai Ling,” Tchen asks, “What must we be doing in our classrooms?” and “What must we be doing in our communities?” From the dilemmas faced by these students, Tchen draws lessons for higher education. He envisions a university that adopts “an intercultural version of …

Roads To Democracy, Lawrence M. Friedman Jan 2005

Roads To Democracy, Lawrence M. Friedman

Syracuse Journal of International Law and Commerce

Of course, "democracy" is not a simple concept; and no two systems that claim to be democracies are exactly the same. The "rule of law" is if anything an even more contested concept. For the purposes of this paper, we do not really need to define democracy rigorously. A society with a reasonable dose of freedom of speech and the press, freedom of religion, more or less fair elections, and the customary package of basic human rights, respected (on the whole) by the government, qualifies as a democracy. These will also tend to be societies that respect the rule of …

Ação Regulatória Do Gnrh No Desenvolvimento Embrionário Precoce E Vitrificação De Embriões Suínos Pelo Método De Microgota (Role Of Gnrh During Early Embryonic Development And Development Of Swine Embryos Following Vitrification By Microdroplet Method), Marcelo Marcos Montagner Jan 2005

Ação Regulatória Do Gnrh No Desenvolvimento Embrionário Precoce E Vitrificação De Embriões Suínos Pelo Método De Microgota (Role Of Gnrh During Early Embryonic Development And Development Of Swine Embryos Following Vitrification By Microdroplet Method), Marcelo Marcos Montagner

Department of Animal Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The objective of this study was to investigate the role of GnRH on the preimplantation development of mouse embryos in vitro. GnRH-I, GnRH-II, and GnRH agonists: Des-Gly, Des-Trp and histrelin did not improve embryo development. However, treatment with the specific GnRH antagonist SB-75 blocked embryo development at morula stage. The inhibition of embryo development by SB-75 could be rescued by the addition of histrelin. To determine which intracellular signaling cascade is involved following binding of GnRH to the GnRHR, embryos were cultured in the presence of specific PKC (GFX) or PKA (SQ22536) inhibitors. The PKC inhibitor blocked embryo development at …

Global Multimedia Collaboration System, Geoffrey C. Fox, Wenjun Wu, Ahmet Uyar, Hasan Bulut, Shrideep Pallickard

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship

In order to build an integrated collaboration system over heterogeneous collaboration technologies, we propose a Global Multimedia Collaboration System (Global-MMCS) based on XGSP A/V Web-Services framework. This system can integrate multiple A/V services, and support various collaboration clients and communities. Now the prototype is being developed and deployed across many universities in USA and China.

A Brave New World Of Criminal Justice: Neil Gerlach's Genetic Imaginary, Stephen Coughlan Jan 2005

A Brave New World Of Criminal Justice: Neil Gerlach's Genetic Imaginary, Stephen Coughlan

Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press

In this well written and intriguing book, Neil Gerlach asks why the criminal justice system has accepted DNA evidence in much the same way that our Anglo-Saxon predecessors accepted trial by ordeal. Why have we not instead shown the same caution we show polygraph evidence? To be sure, he does not present the issue in those terms, and might shudder at the analogy. Still, the central issue he pursues in the book is the question of how DNA evidence has managed to assume its current aura of infallibility, as evidence which is somehow uniquely objective and "true": how it has …

Organized Labor's Influence On Local Elections: A Case History Of Snohomish County, Washington, Jonathan Stuart Burr Jan 2005

Organized Labor's Influence On Local Elections: A Case History Of Snohomish County, Washington, Jonathan Stuart Burr

Theses and Dissertations

Candidates seeking public office must build a strong political following to be successful. This applies at national, state, and even local levels. The support generated for a candidate's campaign can be attributed to factors such as personal characteristics, political following, political resources, and endorsements. This analysis focuses on union endorsements in relation to other political endorsements. The case study of the race for Snohomish County Council in District Five illuminates the connection between endorsements, monetary contributions, and voting behavior. Union political coordinators were interviewed and results from the primary and general election 2005 were compiled. The findings support previous studies …

Student Freedom Of Expression: Violent Content And The Safe School Balance, A. Wayne Mackay, Janet Burt-Gerrans Jan 2005

Student Freedom Of Expression: Violent Content And The Safe School Balance, A. Wayne Mackay, Janet Burt-Gerrans

Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press

The authors begin with a discussion of of the duality in how children are viewed in both international and domestic law. Children are viewed as both under the protection and authority of adults, at the same time as being rights bearing individuals. Following recognition of the difficult tension created by this duality, these authors focus on its application in the balancing of the safe school environment with student freedom of expression. In particular these authors examine cases and scenarios that highlight the complex relationships that result when student expression contains violent content. This timely examination gives consideration to the contemporary …

Making Identity: Law, Memory, And Race In Comparative Perspective, Jan Hoffman French Jan 2005

Making Identity: Law, Memory, And Race In Comparative Perspective, Jan Hoffman French

Sociology and Anthropology Faculty Publications

In this essay, I would like to focus on identity formation with respect to one of these groups-the Xoco community-especially the relationship between law, identity, and race. I hope to bring to light, if only in a tentative and suggestive way, the broader significance of such an inquiry by narrating the story of the Xoco in dialogue with some discussions of similar issues in the United States. In particular, I will compare the successful struggle for recognition of the Xoco with similar struggles for recognition in the U.S. by the Lumbee and Mashpee Indians, who have not achieved full legal …

Will 9/11 Continue To Take A Toll On America’S Cities?, David Dixon Jan 2005

Will 9/11 Continue To Take A Toll On America’S Cities?, David Dixon

Fordham Urban Law Journal

Terrorism and enhanced security concerns are firmly planted in the American psyche. It is hard for most Americans to accept the need to balance the risks of terrorism against the costs and benefits of responding to these risks. In the absence of quantitative measures for most risk assessments, Americans will need to establish qualitative measures for deciding where and how to respond to terrorism. Architects, planners, and others who deal daily with the qualitative issues of city building can play an important leadership role in this effort, in part because the people who traditionally make risk assessments cannot. This qualitative …

The Billable Hours Derby: Empirical Data On The Problems And Pressure Point, Susan Saab Fortney Jan 2005

The Billable Hours Derby: Empirical Data On The Problems And Pressure Point, Susan Saab Fortney

Fordham Urban Law Journal

This Article addresses the frustration with billable hours in large law firms. The Author gathered empirical data to gauge the short and long-term effects of increases in billable hour expectations. An empirical study was conducted in 1999-2000 of associate satisfaction, law firm culture, and billing practices. The Article compares these findings to a 2005 NALP study on billable hours and a Work-Life split. The Article concludes by considering what forces and players will change the current course of conduct in which law firm leaders treat increases in billable hours expectations as a necessary evil. The studies show the costs and …

How Law Firms Can Do Good While Doing Well (And The Answer Is Not Pro Bono), Russell Pearce Jan 2005

How Law Firms Can Do Good While Doing Well (And The Answer Is Not Pro Bono), Russell Pearce

Fordham Urban Law Journal

This Essay looks at whether large law firm business lawyers can do good in today’s society. The author describes the change in the large law firm mentality since the 1960s – most specifically the shift to a focus centered solely on making money. The Article looks at the changes in the legal profession that facilitated this shift. The author proposes that instead of trying to separate making money and doing well, the legal profession should try to integrate the two. The Essay proposes specific suggestions to accomplish this goal, including the creation of a new Model Rule that would restore …
