Validating The Search, Experience, And Credence Product Classification Framework In A Model Of Patronage Intentions, Tulay. Girard Jan 2005

Validating The Search, Experience, And Credence Product Classification Framework In A Model Of Patronage Intentions, Tulay. Girard

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Although the Internet as a shopping medium provides convenience to easily access products, the U.S. e-commerce retail sales still make up a very small percentage of the U.S. total retail sales. To better understand what influences consumers' choices to shop for products or services on the Internet versus local retail stores, this study tests the influence of antecedent factors of consumer patronage intentions for Internet and local retail stores. The study draws the antecedent factors from the extant literature, which include product classes, the importance consumers place on retailer attributes, and consumer perceived risk in product classes. Because the Internet …

Y Tu Hijo Tambien: La Representacion De La Masculinidad En La Literature Y El Cine Mexicanos (1915--2001), John P. Colhouer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

In Mexico, fragmentation is an integral element in social, political, and literary realities expressing an inequality among its citizens. This disparity is reflected in literary and cinematic representations. The Mexican male is the agent that perpetuates the fractured society, and his representation in the arts reflects the impediments to social progress in both the heterosexual and homosexual communities. The novels Los de abajo, Pedro Paramo , and La muerte de Artemio Cruz, present the traditional Mexican male and images of masculinity in the heterosexual community. El vampiro de la Colonia Roma by Luis Zapata introduces the male homosexual character into …

Policing The Spectrum Commons, Philip J. Weiser, Dale N. Hatfield Jan 2005

Policing The Spectrum Commons, Philip J. Weiser, Dale N. Hatfield

Publications

One of the most contested questions in spectrum policy is whether bands of spectrum left as unlicensed will fall victim to the tragedy of the commons. Advocates of increased unlicensed spectrum often downplay what enforcement measures are necessary to minimize interference and to prevent the tragedy of the commons problem. Even imposing spectrum etiquette requirements in addition to the FCC's equipment certification program will fail to address this concern effectively, as the development of such measures - e.g., the requirement that devices listen before they talk - does not ensure that they will be followed. Indeed, if there are incentives …

Anticancer Activity Of Two Dietary Phytochemicals: Genistein And Beta-Lapachone, Kendra T. Merchant Jan 2005

Anticancer Activity Of Two Dietary Phytochemicals: Genistein And Beta-Lapachone, Kendra T. Merchant

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Phytochemicals are biologically active secondary plant metabolites that have been shown to exhibit anti-cancer activity. The dietary phytochemicals genistein isoflavone and beta-lapachone, were investigated to determine their effect on the growth of human prostate adenocarcinoma cells in vitro. The cells were exposed to varying concentrations of both phytochemicals in single and combination treatments for specified time periods and their effect was determined using post-treatment cell viability, treatment-induced apoptosis and cell signaling assays. The overall results revealed that both phytochemicals inhibited cell growth and proliferation and induced apoptosis in a dose-dependent manner for both single and combination treatments. However, combination treatments …

Absence Of Intellect? Spike Tv And A Crisis In Masculinity, Wesley R. Akers Jan 2005

Absence Of Intellect? Spike Tv And A Crisis In Masculinity, Wesley R. Akers

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

This study analyzes the programming, narrative structure and scheduling of Spike TV to reveal how this "first network for men" continues to support hegemonic masculinity through a strategy of gendered narrowcasting. Such representations mediate a crisis in masculinity by glorifying action-oriented males and, therefore, marginalize intellectual representations. The study suggests that such hegemonically masculine representations are contributing to the academic struggles currently plaguing young males in our culture.

Atmosphere For "Orthodoxy": A Chestertonian Reading Of The Marian Heroine In Charles Dickens's "Dombey And Son", Jill A. Kriegel Jan 2005

Atmosphere For "Orthodoxy": A Chestertonian Reading Of The Marian Heroine In Charles Dickens's "Dombey And Son", Jill A. Kriegel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Considering the fervent Catholicism of convert G. K. Chesterton's societal views, his championship of Charles Dickens, a seemingly avid non-Catholic, may appear misplaced. Upon examination, however, the wisdom of Chesterton's rationale will manifest itself; in fact, rereading Dickens's Dombey and Son through the eyes of Chesterton's Orthodoxy will prove Dickens himself to be a champion, albeit an inadvertent one, of the very core of Catholicism. Presenting Florence Dombey as a heroine, as a paragon of religious strength, and as a path to salvation for her misguided father, I present her not only as Dickens's literary and moral contribution to readers …

Afferent Projections To Rhomboid Nucleus Of Thalamus, Michelle Ann Owens Jan 2005

Afferent Projections To Rhomboid Nucleus Of Thalamus, Michelle Ann Owens

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The midline thalamus of rats is anatomically and functionally part of the "limbic" thalamus. The midline thalamic rhomboid nucleus (RH) has not been well characterized. The rhomboid nucleus is located just dorsal to the reuniens nucleus (RE), and just ventral to the central medial nucleus (CeM) of the thalamus. Using the retrograde tracer fluorogold (FG) and anti-FG antibody, we examined afferent projections to RH in the rat. Control injections were also made in CeM and the submedial nucleus of thalamus (SMT). The main sources of input to RH were from the anterior cingulate, agranular insular, orbital, and somatosensory cortices; the …

Policing The Border Between Trademarks And Free Speech: Protecting Unauthorized Trademark Use In Expressive Works, Pratheepan Gulasekaram Jan 2005

Policing The Border Between Trademarks And Free Speech: Protecting Unauthorized Trademark Use In Expressive Works, Pratheepan Gulasekaram

Publications

Abstract: Artists and other creators of expressive works often include trademarks and trademarked products as part of their works. They do so for a number of reasons, including lighthearted humor, critical cultural commentary, parody, or even simply to shock. In instances where such use is both unauthorized by and perceived as disparaging to the mark owner or the trademarked product, owners have attempted to sue under trademark law to enjoin the expressive use. This Article argues that, under a proper analysis of trademark law, precedent, and the free expression ideal enshrined in the First Amendment, mark owners should rarely, if …

Valuing Diversity As An Imperative For Fulfilling The Mission Of The Church, Walter B. T. Douglas

Faculty Publications

Demographic shifts, cultural and ethnic diversity, globalization, and the rapid expansion of the church in the southern hemisphere strongly suggest that the future growth of Adventism may emerge in the developing nations. This article is an attempt to engage in conversation on the changing face of Adventism and the challenge this new Adventism presents across cultural, ethnic, and racially diverse communities. This article provides the church with a window of opportunity to view diversity not as an event but as a process to maximize and explore the richness of its diversity and to see it not as a problem to …

Nature/Culture Clash: The Transnational Trade In Gmos, Dayna Scott Jan 2005

Nature/Culture Clash: The Transnational Trade In Gmos, Dayna Scott

All Papers

This paper aims to offer a fresh perspective into what is at stake in the cross-cultural trade dispute over genetically-modified organisms (GMOs) by subjecting a particular discursive sample, the parties’ submissions to the WTO panel, to critical scrutiny. The first step involves a survey of the rhetorical strategies deployed by the parties’ in the presentation of their arguments to the Panel. Next, I embark on the task of ‘disassembling the double helix’. My use of the term ‘double helix’ in this analysis refers to the close coupling of scientific and legal discourses in the trade regime: science and law are …

The Pedagogical Significance Of The Bush Stem Cell Policy: A Window Into Bioethical Regulation In The United States (President George W. Bush, Fifth Anniversary Essay Collection), O. Carter Snead Jan 2005

The Pedagogical Significance Of The Bush Stem Cell Policy: A Window Into Bioethical Regulation In The United States (President George W. Bush, Fifth Anniversary Essay Collection), O. Carter Snead

Journal Articles

The enormous significance of the Bush stem cell funding policy has been evident since its inception. The announcement of the policy on August 9, 2001 marked the first time a U.S. president had ever taken up a matter of bioethical import as the sole subject of a major national policy address. Indeed, the August 9th speech was the President's first nationally televised policy address of any kind. Since then, the policy has been a constant focus of attention and discussion by political commentators, the print and broadcast media, advocacy organizations, scientists, elected officials, and candidates for all levels of office …

Enhancing The Status Of Non-State Actors Through A Global War On Terror?, Mary Ellen O'Connell Jan 2005

Enhancing The Status Of Non-State Actors Through A Global War On Terror?, Mary Ellen O'Connell

Journal Articles

Soon after September 11, President Bush declared a global war on terrorism and members of terrorist groups "combatants." These declarations are not only generally inconsistent with international law; they also reverse the trend regarding the legal status of international non-state actors. For decades, law-abiding non-state actors, such as international humanitarian aid organizations, enjoyed ever-expanding rights on the international plane. Professor Schachter observed how this trend came at the expense of the nation-state. He also predicted, however, that the nation-state would not fade away any time soon. And, by the late Twentieth Century, the trend toward enhanced status was noticeably slowing. …

The (Surprising) Truth About Schiavo: A Defeat For The Cause Of Autonomy, O. Carter Snead Jan 2005

The (Surprising) Truth About Schiavo: A Defeat For The Cause Of Autonomy, O. Carter Snead

Journal Articles

A survey of the commentary following the conclusion of the Theresa Marie Schiavo matter leaves one with the impression that the case was a victory for the cause of autonomy and the right of self-determination in the end-of-life context. In this essay, I seek to challenge this thesis and demonstrate that, contrary to popular understanding, it is the defenders of autonomy and self-determination who should be most troubled by what transpired in the Schiavo case. In support of this claim, I will first set forth (in cursory fashion) the underlying aim of the defenders of autonomy in this context. Then, …

Media Messages About Body Image And Food: Adolescent Perceptions Of Contradictory Messages In Television Commercials, Carrie Wise Jan 2005

Media Messages About Body Image And Food: Adolescent Perceptions Of Contradictory Messages In Television Commercials, Carrie Wise

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This study had two primary purposes, the first of which was to examine contemporary television media messages and to ascertain whether there exists an ideological contradiction between messages associated with ideal body types and messages associated with obesity. The second purpose was to explore adolescents' perceptions of these messages and to understand their possible effects on adolescents. This study was conducted using a fallibilitic realism methodological approach. Two data collection methods were used in this study. A content analysis of current television commercials was conducted, from which three major findings emerged. First, there was a high frequency of commercials containing …

Lockouts, Protests, And Scabs: A Critical Assessment Of The "Los Angeles Herald Examiner" Strike [Article], Bonnie Brennen Jan 2005

Lockouts, Protests, And Scabs: A Critical Assessment Of The "Los Angeles Herald Examiner" Strike [Article], Bonnie Brennen

College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications

This essay uses the case of the Los Angeles Herald Examiner strike, 1967–1977, to show how a critical labor perspective offers historically grounded, politically informed, and culturally situated analyses of media practices and uses. The decade-long strike analyzed here, which has been virtually ignored by media historians, highlights the devastating economic consequences for both the newspaper and the Guild. This essay focuses on the political and cultural implications of class conflict, read through the power struggle between Los Angeles Newspaper Guild members and the Hearst-owned Herald Examiner over issues of identity, work, and economics.

College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications

Miller et al examine the construction of readership in Ebony, Essence and O, The Oprah magazine, three popular magazines that purport to be a vehicle of identity and awareness for their target audience. Upon evaluation, they found that Ebony and Essence both challenge the hegemonic process with the incorporation of cultural artifacts that call upon collective memory to form reader association.

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HPCs) are a heterogenic population of cells used to treat a number of human diseases. Multilineage differentiation is a required function in successful hematopoietic reconstitution after transplantation of cryopreserved grafts. Conventional use of the cryoprotectant dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) has resulted in some reports of infusion related toxicity attributed to DMSO and/or damage to cells during freezethawing procedures. The purpose of this study was to explore the use of trehalose, a nontoxic disaccharide of glucose, as an alternative cryoprotectant. Trehalose was introduced into HPCs using the P2Z receptor, known to form nonselective pores in the presence …

Influence Of Nationality On The Interpretation Of Ireland's Tourism Destination Imagery, Catriona Murphy-Underhill Jan 2005

Influence Of Nationality On The Interpretation Of Ireland's Tourism Destination Imagery, Catriona Murphy-Underhill

Plymouth Business School Theses

This thesis investigates the influence of nationality on the interpretations of the tourism destination imagery of Ireland, drawing in particular on the views of tourists travelling from Britain. It involved an assessment of the influence (if any) of the nationality of the tourist and the nationality of the place on pre- and post-visit interpretations of Ireland's perceived and projected images, as well as an evaluation of the implications of such influences on Ireland's image as a tourist destination. By means of empirical research applied to the same sample of tourists travelling from Britain to Ireland via Shannon airport, the factors …
