Generalized Geologic Map For Land-Use Planning: Kenton County, Kentucky, Richard A. Smath, Bart Davidson, Daniel I. Carey, John D. Kiefer
Generalized Geologic Map For Land-Use Planning: Kenton County, Kentucky, Richard A. Smath, Bart Davidson, Daniel I. Carey, John D. Kiefer
Map and Chart--KGS
This map is not intended to be used for selecting individual sites. Its purpose is to inform land-use planners, government officials, and the public in a general way about geologic bedrock conditions that affect the selection of sites for various purposes. The properties of thick soils may supercede those of the underlying bedrock and should be considered on a site-to-site basis. At any site, it is important to understand the characteristics of both the soils and the underlying rock.
Groundwater Quality In Kentucky: Cadmium, Bart Davidson, R. Stephen Fisher
Groundwater Quality In Kentucky: Cadmium, Bart Davidson, R. Stephen Fisher
Information Circular--KGS
Cadmium is a metallic element that occurs naturally in the earth's crust, especially in zinc-, lead-, and copper-bearing ores (Forstner and Whittmann, 1981). Pure cadmium is a soft silver-white metal, but is rarely found naturally in its pure form. It is commonly combined with other elements, such as oxygen (cadmium oxide) and sulfur (cadmium sulfate).

Hole Drift-Mobility Measurements In Microcrystalline Silicon, T. Dylla, F. Finger, Eric A. Schiff
Hole Drift-Mobility Measurements In Microcrystalline Silicon, T. Dylla, F. Finger, Eric A. Schiff
Physics - All Scholarship
We have measured transient photocurrents on several p-i-n solar cells based on microcrystalline silicon. For two of these samples, we were able to obtain conclusive hole drift-mobility measurements. Despite the predominant crystallinity of these samples, temperature-dependent measurements were consistent with an exponential-bandtail trapping model for transport, which is usually associated with noncrystalline materials. We estimated valence bandtail widths of about 31 meV and hole band mobilities of 1–2 cm2 /V s. The measurements support mobility-edge transport for holes in these microcrystalline materials, and broaden the range of materials for which mobility-edge transport corresponds to an apparently universal band mobility of …

Temperature-Dependent Open-Circuit Voltage Measurements And Light-Soaking In Hydrogenated Amorphous Silcon Solar Cells, Jianjun Liang, Eric A. Schiff, S. Guha, Baojie Yan, Jeff Yang
Physics - All Scholarship
We present temperature-dependent measurements of the open-circuit voltage VOC(T) in hydrogenated amorphous silicon nip solar cells prepared at United Solar. At room-temperature and above, VOC measured using near-solar illumination intensity differs by as much as 0.04 V for the as-deposited and light-soaked states; the values of VOC for the two states converge below 250 K. Models for VOC based entirely on recombination through deep levels (dangling bonds) do not account for the convergence effect. The convergence is present in a model that assumes the recombination traffic in the as-deposited state involves only bandtails, but which splits the recombination traffic fairly …

Dois And Deeplinked E-Reserves: Innovative Links For The Future, Scott A. Warren
Dois And Deeplinked E-Reserves: Innovative Links For The Future, Scott A. Warren
Librarian Publications
Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) have uses beyond reference linking and document identification, which are their current primary selling points. Due to their inherent stability, DOIs are well suited for creating deeplinked e-reserves. This paper outlines reasons why libraries should use DOIs whenever possible in the construction of deeplinked e-reserves and provides examples of how such linking can take place, including means for providing security and authentication. Other innovative uses for DOIs in academic libraries are suggested. [Article copies available for a fee from The Haworth Document Delivery Service: 1-800-HAWORTH. Constitutional Responsibility To Provide A System Of Free Public Schools: How Relevant Is The States' Experience To Shaping Governmental Obligations In Emerging Democracies?, Denise A. Hartman
Syracuse Journal of International Law and Commerce
This article will first briefly outline the evolution of public education in the United States from a national perspective. Next, it will focus in on a couple of states, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania, setting forth in more detail the history of public education in those states, the constitutionalization of the government's responsibility for public education in those states, and judicial interpretations of that constitutional responsibility. Finally, this paper will attempt to draw some inferences and propose a set of principles to guide the formulation of a national role for providing a system of public education in emerging constitutional democracies.

The Stepping Stone Model, Ii: Genealogies And The Infinite Sites Model, Submitted, Iljana Zähle, J. Theodore Cox, Richard Durrett
Mathematics - All Scholarship
This paper extends earlier work by Cox and Durrett, who studied the coalescence times for two lineages in the stepping stone model on the two-dimensional torus. We show that the genealogy of a sample of size n is given by a time change of Kingman’s coalescent. With DNA sequence data in mind, we investigate mutation patterns under the infinite sites model, which assumes that each mutation occurs at a new site. Our results suggest that the spatial structure of the human population contributes to the haplotype structure and a slower than expected decay of genetic correlation with distance revealed by …

Lad: Localization Anomaly Detection For Wireless Sensor Networks, Wenliang Du, Lei Fang, Peng Ning
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship
In wireless sensor networks (WSNs), sensors ’ locations play a critical role in many applications. Having a GPS receiver on every sensor node is costly. In the past, a number of location discovery (localization) schemes have been proposed. Most of these schemes share a common feature: they use some special nodes, called beacon nodes, which are assumed to know their own locations (e.g., through GPS receivers or manual configuration). Other sensors discover their locations based on the reference information provided by these beacon nodes. Most of the beacon-based localization schemes assume a benign environment, where all beacon nodes are supposed …

A State-Free Data Delivery Protocol For Multihop Wireless Sensor Networks, Dazhi Chen, Jing Deng, Pramod K. Varshney
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship
A novel, state-free, and competition-based data delivery protocol, called State-free Implicit Forwarding (SIF), is proposed for multihop wireless sensor networks. The SIF protocol assumes moderate node density and distance-to-sink awareness. The state-free feature of SIF makes it robust to high network dynamics. SIF also combines the tasks of routing and MAC, via cross-layer design, to simplify the complexity of the protocol stack in sensors and to save precious network resources. Simulation results are presented to show that SIF performs better than some previously proposed protocols for data delivery in terms of communication overhead, packet delivery ratio, and average packet delay.

Importance of addressing soft errors in both safety critical applications and commercial consumer products is increasing, mainly due to ever shrinking geometries, higher-density circuits, and employment of power-saving techniques such as voltage scaling and component shut-down. As a result, it is becoming necessary to treat reliability as a first-class citizen in system design. In particular, reliability decisions taken early in system design can have significant benefits in terms of design quality. Motivated by this observation, this paper presents a reliability-centric high-level synthesis approach that addresses the soft error problem. The proposed approach tries to maximize reliability of the design while …
The Backward Shift On HP, William T. Ross
The Backward Shift On HP, William T. Ross
Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications
In this semi-expository paper, we examine the backward shift operator
Bf := (f-f(0)/z
on the classical Hardy space Hp. Through there are many aspects of this operator worthy of study [20], we will focus on the description of its invariant subspaces by which we mean the closed linear manifolds Ɛ ⊂ Hp for which BƐ ⊂ Ɛ. When 1 < p < ∞, a seminal paper of Douglas, Shapiro, and Shields [8] describes these invariant subspaces by using the important concept of a pseudocontinuation developed earlier by Shapiro [26]. When p = 1, the description is the same [1] except that in the proof, one must be mindful of some technical considerations involving the functions of bounded mean oscillation.
Employer-Based Training Programs For Tanf Recipients: A Public Policy Examination, Nan S. Ellis
Employer-Based Training Programs For Tanf Recipients: A Public Policy Examination, Nan S. Ellis
Fordham Urban Law Journal
The article begins by stating that several programs have been introduced with the goal of lowering the amount of people that live below the poverty level. These programs try to accomplish this by focusing on getting such people jobs, but the focus cannot solely be on workers, it must also be on employers. One type of training that shows promise is Employer-based training, which involves an extensive assessment of the employees skills and job performance, and there are indications that EBT programs might offer better opportunities for at least a segment of the welfare population. The article's goal is to …

Toxicity and its detection in the dinoflagellate fish predators Pfiesteria piscicida and Pfiesteria shumwayae depend on the strain and the use of reliable assays. Two assays, standardized fish bioassays (SFBs) with juvenile fish and fish microassays (FMAs) with larval fish, were compared for their utility to detect toxic Pfiesteria. The comparison included strains with confirmed toxicity, negative controls (noninducible Pfiesteria strains and a related nontoxic cryptoperidiniopsoid dinoflagellate), and P. shumwayae strain CCMP2089, which previously had been reported as nontoxic. SFBs, standardized by using toxic Pfiesteria (coupled with tests confirming Pfiesteria toxin) and conditions conducive to toxicity expression, reliably detected …
