Plant Functional Group Diversity As A Mechanism For Invasion Resistance, Monica L. Pokorny, Roger L. Sheley, Catherine A. Zabinski, Richard E. Engel, Tony J. Svejcar, John J. Borkowski

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

A commonly cited mechanism for invasion resistance is more complete resource use by diverse plant assemblages with maximum niche complementarity. We investigated the invasion resistance of several plant functional groups against the nonindigenous forb Spotted knapweed (Centaurea maculosa). The study consisted of a factorial combination of seven functional group removals (groups singularly or in combination) and two C. maculosa treatments (addition vs. no addition) applied in a randomized complete block design replicated four times at each of two sites.

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Aim Extrapolation of tower CO2 fluxes will be greatly facilitated if robust relationships between flux components and remotely sensed factors are established. Long-term measurements at five Northern Great Plains locations were used to obtain relationships between CO2 fluxes and photosynthetically active radiation (Q), other on-site factors, and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) from the SPOT VEGETATION data set.

How The Border Crossed Us: Filling The Gap Between Plume V. Seward And The Dispossission Of Mexican Landowners In California After 1848, Kim David Chanbonpin Jan 2005

How The Border Crossed Us: Filling The Gap Between Plume V. Seward And The Dispossission Of Mexican Landowners In California After 1848, Kim David Chanbonpin

Cleveland State Law Review

The goal of this paper is to show how the rule in Plume v. Seward and the actual practice of the Board of Land Commissioners in California at the time are not in synch. In Section II, I provide the historical background to the United States imperialist goal of Manifest Destiny. This section also gives a factual introduction to Plume and the procedure of the Board of Land Commissioners. Section III contrasts the result in Plume with the outcomes in the Board's decisions in factually similar land claims. Section IV analyzes the Guadalupe-Hidalgo Treaty Land Claims Act proposed to Congress …

A Multi Commodity Recyclables Collection Model Using Partitioned Vehicles, Natali Mohanty Jan 2005

A Multi Commodity Recyclables Collection Model Using Partitioned Vehicles, Natali Mohanty

Open Access Dissertations

This study identifies fundamental problems in the operation of recyclables collection services and develops a model for optimizing the associated logistics operations. Based on an analysis of data of types of materials and volumes collected from a collaborating recycling services company which uses partitioned vehicles, it is clear that operation and transportation costs, and collection volumes are the dominant factors that determine profitability in the commercial recycling business. Although recycling operations and distribution (forward) operations share many characteristics, decisions related to fleet configuration and operation for the former are significantly more complicated because of the wide dispersal of similar materials …

Numerical Analysis Of Heat Transfer In Pulsating Turbulent Flow In A Pipe, Xuefeng Wang, Nengli Zhang Jan 2005

Numerical Analysis Of Heat Transfer In Pulsating Turbulent Flow In A Pipe, Xuefeng Wang, Nengli Zhang

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

Convection heat transfer in pulsating turbulent flow with large velocity oscillating amplitudes in a pipe at constant wall temperature is numerically studied. A low-Reynolds-number (LRN) k–ε turbulent model is used in the turbulence modeling. The model analysis indicates that Womersley number is a very important parameter in the study of pulsating flow and heat transfer. Flow and heat transfer in a wide range of process parameters are investigated to reveal the velocity and temperature characteristics of the flow. The numerical calculation results show that in a pulsating turbulent flow there is an optimum Womersley number at which heat transfer is …

Highly Degenerate Quadratic Forms Over Finite Fields Of Characteristic 2, Robert W. Fitzgerald Jan 2005

Highly Degenerate Quadratic Forms Over Finite Fields Of Characteristic 2, Robert W. Fitzgerald

Articles and Preprints

Let K/F be an extension of finite fields of characteristic two. We consider quadratic forms written as the trace of xR(x), where R(x) is a linearized polynomial. We show all quadratic forms can be so written, in an essentially unique way. We classify those R, with coefficients 0 or 1, where the form has a codimension 2 radical. This is applied to maximal Artin-Schreier curves and factorizations of linearized polynomials.

Feedback Classification Of Multi-Input Nonlinear Control Systems, Issa Amadou Tall Jan 2005

Feedback Classification Of Multi-Input Nonlinear Control Systems, Issa Amadou Tall

Articles and Preprints

We study the feedback group action on multi-input nonlinear control systems with uncontrollable mode. We follow slightly an approach proposed in Kang and Krener [W. Kang and A. J. Krener, SIAM J. Control. Optim., 30 (1992), pp. 1319–1337] which consists of analyzing the system and the feedback group step by step. We construct a normal form which generalizes, on one hand, the results obtained in the single-input case and, on the other hand, those recently obtained by the same author in the controllable case. We illustrate our results by studying the Caltech Multi-Vehicle Wireless Testbed (MVWT) and the prototype …

Knots On A Positive Template Have A Bounded Number Of Prime Factors., Michael C. Sullivan Jan 2005

Knots On A Positive Template Have A Bounded Number Of Prime Factors., Michael C. Sullivan

Articles and Preprints

Templates are branched 2-manifolds with semi-flows used to model "chaotic" hyperbolic invariant sets of flows on 3-manifolds. Knotted orbits on a template correspond to those in the original flow. Birman and Williams conjectured that for any given template the number of prime factors of the knots realized would be bounded. We prove a special case when the template is positive; the general case is now known to be false.

A Household Probability Model For The Purchase Of A New Suv, 1998-2002, Keith Eugene Brunton Jan 2005

A Household Probability Model For The Purchase Of A New Suv, 1998-2002, Keith Eugene Brunton

Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)

This project suggests that SUV buyers have significantly different characteristics than other automobile buyers. Drawing data from the Consumer Expenditure Survey for 1998 through 2002 and employing a binomial logistical regression technique, this project identifies the determinants that significantly influence the household’s decision to purchase a new sport utility vehicle (SUV). Market trends (growth in the SUV market or other unmeasured factors), the reference person’s age (the household’s preferences based upon their position in the family life cycle), the reference person’s education level (general household preferences), income (the flow of resources into the household), region (demographic differences and needs based …

Evaluating Particle Swarm Intelligence Techniques For Solving University Examination Timetabling Problems, Daniel R. Fealko Jan 2005

Evaluating Particle Swarm Intelligence Techniques For Solving University Examination Timetabling Problems, Daniel R. Fealko

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the suitability and effectiveness of the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) technique when applied to the University Examination Timetabling problem. We accomplished this by analyzing experimentally the performance profile-the quality of the solution as a function of the execution time-of the standard form of the PSO algorithm when brought to bear against the University Examination Timetabling problem. This study systematically investigated the impact of problem and algorithm factors in solving this particular timetabling problem and determined the algorithm's performance profile under the specified test environment. Keys factors studied included problem size (i.e., number …

Establishing An Online Community Of Practice For Instructors Of English As A Foreign Language, Christopher M. Johnson Jan 2005

Establishing An Online Community Of Practice For Instructors Of English As A Foreign Language, Christopher M. Johnson

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

Communities of practice are entities that emerge for the purposes of learning and advancement of knowledge in a particular area. They emerge under all circumstances, even adverse situations. Because they can spawn great innovation and knowledge advancement, organizations need to cultivate and establish environments that allow them to develop. Currently, communities of practice have moved into the online world, in which their members use computer mediated communication to collaborate with each other.

In January, 2002, a virtual community was formed to enable teachers of English as a Foreign Language to collaborate on learning and applying various computing technologies in language …

Quantitative And Qualitative Assessment Of Groundwater Resources In Al-Khatim Area, Uae, Ahmed Khaled Othman

Accounting Dissertations

The UAE has achieved remarkable progress in transformation from separated small emirates to a modem union country with a high standard of living. The country is however, considered an extreme arid region. In spite of these harsh conditions, The UAE government has encouraged plantation in towns, villages and country side. This has led to sharp increase in the agricultural sector particularly during the last three decades. As the irrigated land kept increasing, there was a deep concern about the water demand and the impact of agriculture activities on groundwater systems. Al-Khatim area is considered one of the most

important agricultural …

Evolution Of Rules In A Common Law System: Differential Litigation Of The Fee Tail And Other Perpetuities, Jeffrey E. Stake Jan 2005

Evolution Of Rules In A Common Law System: Differential Litigation Of The Fee Tail And Other Perpetuities, Jeffrey E. Stake

Articles by Maurer Faculty

This paper presents a variation on the Rubin-Priest theory of the evolution of common law rules toward efficiency. It offers the fee tail and similar restraints on alienation as examples of how inefficient rules can lead to inefficient uses of land, which cause owners to seek the help of courts in freeing their lands from the inefficient constraints. In other words, there is a feedback loop that provides courts with opportunities to overturn inefficient common law rules. We should expect this common law drift toward efficiency to be stronger for property rules than for tort rules. Because efficient property rules …

Domesticating The Gerrymander: An Essay On Standards, Fair Representation, And The Necessary Question Of Judicial Will, Luis Fuentes-Rohwer Jan 2005

Domesticating The Gerrymander: An Essay On Standards, Fair Representation, And The Necessary Question Of Judicial Will, Luis Fuentes-Rohwer

Articles by Maurer Faculty

The U.S. Supreme Court has moved beyond its cautious intervention in Baker v. Carr and now firmly controls the law of democracy. Yet political gerrymandering questions so understood have traditionally proven difficult for the Court to examine properly. The recent Vieth v. Jubelirer is but a further example of this phenomenon. This Essay situates Vieth within the reapportionment revolution and ultimately concludes that the central question in gerrymandering cases is the question of judicial will and whether the Court will choose to exercise its power. This Essay closes with a cautionary note: in light of the Court's general performance in …
