Risk And Consequence Analysis Focused On Biota Transfers Potentially Associated With Surface Water Diversions Between The Missouri River And Red River Basins, Greg Linder, Ed Little, Lynne Johnson, Chad Vishy, Bruce Peacock, Heather Goeddecke

United States Geological Survey: Publications

Section 1 provides a brief overview of the project, including a cursory summary of the history of the “Garrison Diversion” and how that history relates to this work focused on the analysis of risks and consequences potentially associated with interbasin biota transfers. The present study was initiated under the auspices of the Dakota Water Resources Act (DWRA) of 2000, which directed the Secretary of the Interior to conduct a comprehensive study of the water quality and quantity needs of the Red River Valley and the options for meeting those needs. As such, the Bureau of Reclamation (Reclamation) requested technical support …

Descriptive Naming Of Context Data Providers, Norman H. Cohen, Paul Castro, Archan Misra Jul 2005

Descriptive Naming Of Context Data Providers, Norman H. Cohen, Paul Castro, Archan Misra

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Much context data comes from mobile, transient, and unreliable sources. Such resources are best specified by descriptive names identifying what data is needed rather than which source is to provide it. The design of descriptive names has important consequences, but until now little attention has been focused on this problem. We propose a descriptive naming system for providers of context data that provides more flexibility and power than previous naming systems by classifying data providers into “provider kinds” that are organized in an evolving hierarchy of subkinds and superkinds. New provider kinds can be inserted in the hierarchy not only …

How Much You Watch, How Much You Pay, Yongdong Wu, Hwee Hwa Pang, Robert H. Deng Jul 2005

How Much You Watch, How Much You Pay, Yongdong Wu, Hwee Hwa Pang, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper presents a pay-video scheme that manages video stream, key stream and payment stream efficiently. In our scheme, the owner segments a video into fragments and encrypts them with independent keys. The keys are generated with a novel concept called as hash interval, where each hash interval discloses a range of numbers without disclosing any information on numbers outside of the range. The video fragments are then broadcast on one or more channels. A buyer can purchase the keys to decrypt any fragments and, within each fragment, any desired quality level. The accompanying payment protocol is integrated with the …

Subdifferential Calculus In Asplund Generated Spaces, Marian Fabian, Philip D. Loewen, Boris S. Mordukhovich

Mathematics Research Reports

We extend the definition of the limiting Frechet subdifferential and the limiting Frechet normal cone from Asplund spaces to Asplund generated spaces. Then we prove a sum rule, a mean value theorem, and other statements for this concept.

Cs 466/666: Introduction To Formal Languages, Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan

Computer Science & Engineering Syllabi

This course introduces the theory of formal languages and automata. The primary focus is on the two methods of defining languages: using generators (e.g., grammars/regular expressions) and using recognizers (e.g., finite state machines). Along with presenting the fundamentals, this course will develop and examine relationships among the various specification methods for the regular languages and the context-free languages, in detail. Overall, we plan to cover the first seven chapters of the text book.

Civil And Criminal Recidivists: Extraterritoriality In Tort And Crime, Wayne A. Logan Jul 2005

Civil And Criminal Recidivists: Extraterritoriality In Tort And Crime, Wayne A. Logan

Scholarly Publications

Historically, punitive damage awards and criminal sentences have shared the common justifications of punishment and deterrence, with the culpability of tortfeasors and criminals alike being enhanced as a result of repeat misconduct. The Supreme Court’s 2003 decision in State Farm v. Campbell suggests, however, that the parallels now in effect stop at the state line. The extraterritorial misconduct of tortfeasors is permitted to play a very limited role, if any, in the assessment of punitive damage awards. Meanwhile, such misconduct continues to be used by courts to significantly enhance the sentences of criminal defendants, an asymmetry accentuated by California v. …

Upper Spokane River Model In Idaho: Boundary Conditions And Model Setup And Calibration For 2001 And 2004, Robert Leslie Annear, Scott A. Wells, Chris Berger

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

As a result of a Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) study of the Spokane River in Washington, a hydrodynamic and water quality model for the Spokane River was developed by Portland State University (PSU) for the Corps of Engineers and the Washington Department of Ecology from the Washington-Idaho state line to the outlet of Long Lake.

An earlier study of the Spokane River was undertaken by Limno-Tech (2001a, 2001b) for the domain shown in Figure 3. Limno-Tech used an earlier version of CE-QUAL-W2, Version 2, for the Reservoir portion of the Spokane River from Post Falls Dam to Coeur d’Alene …

Morphisms In Context, Markus Krotzsch, Guo-Qiang Zhang, Pascal Hitzler Jul 2005

Morphisms In Context, Markus Krotzsch, Guo-Qiang Zhang, Pascal Hitzler

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

Morphisms constitute a general tool for modelling complex relationships between mathematical objects in a disciplined fashion. In Formal Concept Analysis (FCA), morphisms can be used for the study of structural properties of knowledge represented in formal contexts, with applications to data transformation and merging. In this paper we present a comprehensive treatment of some of the most important morphisms in FCA and their relationships, including dual bonds, scale measures, infomorphisms, and their respective relations to Galois connections. We summarize our results in a concept lattice that cumulates the relationships among the considered morphisms. The purpose of this work is to …

A Semantic Template Based Designer For Semantic Web Processes, Ranjit Mulye, John A. Miller, Kunal Verma, Karthik Gomadam, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

The growing popularity of service oriented computing based on Web services standards is creating a need for paradigms to represent and design business processes. Significant work has been done in the representation aspects with regards to WSBPEL. However, design and modeling of business processes is still an open issue. In this paper, we present a novel designer for business processes, which allows for intuitive modeling of Web processes, as well as using a template based approach for semi-automatically integrating partners either at design time or at deployment time. This work has been done as part of the METEOR-S project, which …

A Multi-Instrument Study Of The Helix Nebula Knots With The Hubble Space Telescope, C. R. O'Dell, W. J. Henney, Gary J. Ferland

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We have conducted a combined observational and theoretical investigation of the ubiquitous knots in the Helix Nebula (NGC 7293). We have constructed a combined hydrodynamic + radiation model for the ionized portion of these knots and have accurately calculated a static model for their molecular regions. Imaging observations in optical emission lines were made with the Hubble Space Telescope's STIS, operating in a "slitless" mode, complemented by WFPC2 images in several of the same lines. The NICMOS camera was used to image the knots in H2. These observations, when combined with other studies of H2 and …
